New PC game "Mafia"

Has anyone played it yet? It looks from the promo shots a bit like Grand Theft Auto III or Vice City except with a 1930’s theme.

I was going to rush out and buy it but I figured I’d wait for opinions.

There was a PC game called Mafia which fits your description, it came out in '02. It was a very good one IMO, is this a sequel you are referring to?

Yeah, it came out in 2002, and IMO it’s very good.

I think it’s just coming out for PS2, which is probably how you got the impression it was new. You should be able to pick it up very cheaply for the PC.

I did enjoy it, I seem to remember it being fairly different in feel from GTA3 (which was just THE BEST GAME). It was pretty hard on my system specs. I don’t think you could just grab any car, etc, with quite the ease that you could in GTA. Also do bear in mind that cars moved a lot more slowly in those days. That said, top game.

It’s an incredibly polished game but, for me, the cars were just too slow.

Great game, but it’s very different from GTA III. Sure, you get to drive around in a fully-rendered city, but unless you cheat there’s really no opportunity for wreaking the kind of free-form havoc that you do in GTA. It’s a story-driven game so the only reason to get in a car is to go from one place to another.

Besides, in the early stages of the game the cars have such poor performance that driving is actually pretty tedious. Some of the cars top out at ~30 mph and have trouble going uphill. On top of that, if you pass a cop while going even 1 mile over the speed limit, you’ll get pulled over. The cars improve later on, but IMO the driving portion of the game is pretty weak.

The rest of the game is spectacular, though. The graphics are beautiful, the gunfights are epic, and the story is compelling, with a satisfying and emotional payoff at the end. If you’re looking for a GTA clone, though, this isn’t the game for you.

Not so – there’s a whole free-form mode. It’s just not hooked up to the main plot/game.

Hey, RNATB, check your email.

Mafia was a very nice game, though I have a minimal attention span for driving games (I do a lot of driving around randomly in GTA3).

Hmmmmm, I wonder what that’s about

Help! It’s the Family!

Should never start a thread with Mafia in the title…

I actually bought it a few weeks ago when I got a new computer (only $9 at Wally World) and have been enjoying it thoroughly. I love how the action sequences don’t get even remotely tedious, with each level feeling totally different than the last.

I need some help though from those that have played the game.

I’m on the second to last level (I think, the bank job one) and have gone to see the Yellow guy with the guns, delivered the package and protected the Big Dick guy, and have stolen the really nice car. So I go to pick up Paulie and I’m pretty sure I’m right in front of the damn house as it’s right next to the red X, honking the horn repeatedly and the bastard refuses to come out. It’s the double doored place right next to one of the subway pillars, right? Any ideas? A glitch maybe?

Although someone can probably answer your question, if you go here, you should be able to find the answer to your question, Bababooey.

Yeah, I’d already gone through all those walkthroughs and checked the Mafia Message board, but had no luck + the board requires a paid email address to register, but I only use mine for friends/relatives and eBay. I have a feeling it’s a glitch as I’ve experienced a very similar situation in Splinter Cell that was resolved when I replayed the level (but did nothing different to my knowledge)…
