Since people are talking about Thor, my son asked me a question last night that I couldn’t answer.
Donald Blake would turn into Thor by tapping his walking stick on the ground, the walking stick would turn into Mjollnir, Donald Blake would turn into Thor.
How did Thor turn back into Donald Blake? And why would he want to anyway?

Exactly, Arnold.

Pretty soon he never turned back into Blake. And pretty soon the whole “Blake” angle was retconned–it wasn’t Blake who turned into Thor, but rather Thor was turned into Blake and given amnesia to teach him a lesson.

Will this have any bearing on how they treat the movie Thor? no idea. But for me there is only one classic continuity, and it is what Stan Lee wrote in the 60s. Nothing else matters. And in the 60s Thor was a god. 'Nuff said.

Well, if the Fantastic Four showed up in ancient Norse mythology, the Norse would have called them gods too.

How did Thor turn back into Donald Blake? And why would he want to anyway?

He hit the bottom of Mjollnir’s handle on the ground to turn back into Blake. I don’t remember why he kept the secret identity though. Maybe he had a girlfriend. Wasn’t Blake a doctor?

The Kevin Sorbo Hercules had a pretty good design for Thor. Sorry, that’s the best pic I could find. Thor carries a sledge hammer and teleports by hitting the ground with his hammer and disappearing in a flash of light. Pretty cool actually.

So, you’re arguing for a costume that looks less like the comic book?

The costume shouldn’t be judged by how much it looks like the one in the comic book. It should be judged by how fitting it looks for Thor. If there’s a comic book costume that looks good and would work well in live action, then sure, use it, but don’t be restricted by that.

Any time you talk about something that doesn’t exist you get into semantics, don’t you? (Or does somebody out there want to argue for Thor’s reality?)

All you’re saying is that man made god in his image, not the other way around. That’s certainly true. What that doesn’t mean is that all gods have to be omnipotent beings as in the mythology of any certain religion. Gods can be anything. Pantheistic gods are always different in concept from monotheistic gods.

Stan Lee said over and over again that Thor was a god. I don’t know today’s Marvel continuity, which is why I asked about it. But there is no possible doubt about the first decade or two of Thor’s existence. I read every one of those comics as they came out. The gods were real, but they were not omnipotent beings. Thor was a god of the Norse. Hercules was a Greek god. Other members of the pantheons also appeared. Stan couldn’t do a Christian god for obvious reasons, but he could call Thor a god and get away with it. So he did.

Was Thor more like the Thing or Hulk than the Christian God? Yes, he was. But he wasn’t mortal, either. Marvel’s gods were like superheroes but in a different phylum, so to speak.
