New series of Red Dwarf begins today

I watched 12 minutes and turned it off. Every joke was telegraphed and fell flat. I really wanted to to like it, but it was godawful. :frowning:

Presumably it comes after Back to Earth, which itself took place some time after Series 8. They never did a Series 9 (this one is billed as Series 10) because they felt they’d written themselves into a corner.

It was very, very sitcommy. The old, “classic” episodes felt more like a (at least semi-) intelligent science fiction series that happened to be funny. They dealt with big ideas and concepts, albeit in a lighthearted way. This was just a sitcom about four mildly wacky dudes that happen to be out in deep space. Granted, it was still miles ahead of the last few outings, but there wasn’t much substance to it.

They need Duane Dibbley on more.

The moose bit was great. They still have the comedy in the show. I even guessed the punchline for Rimmer with his brother in the end, so the characters and humor are still the same.

The show was always aired with laughter (whether it’s a track I don’t know) but the DVD version usually has a laugh-free version.

I still find it odd how knowing that the laughter might be fake is enough to annoy people when real laughter has been scientifically shown to make people laugh more and rate things as funnier. I know I laugh more when I have a laugh track.

Damn song has been stuck in my head ever since I watched this a few days ago!

I love that theme song so much :D.

I too feel like they returned to some of the glory/chemistry of seasons 1-6. They really seemed more like themselves than they did in 7 or 8 (and I never saw Back to Earth).

I don’t care about the continuity whatsoever and never even thought of it. The phonelines were being run by androids, not humans, so that explains why it still exists even after all humans are long gone.

The moose was definitely the best bit

I don’t think I watched the last few series (I was a massive fan of 1-5 series, then was disappointed with how it changed after that, and eventually gave up altogether), so I’ve no idea where they’re meant to be, what’s meant to be going on, so this set-up is perfect for me.

No backstory, no explanation, just the Boys from the Dwarf, on the 'Dwarf with Starbug and no Kochanski.

(could do with a Holly though) :frowning:

Just 1 ‘Moose’

I think Back to Earth was classed as Series 9.

I was out with friends on Sunday in the pub and the conversation got round to what TV stars you would hook up with.

I said Wilma Flintstone - met with quizical stares.
‘you know thats a cartoon right?’
‘Of course’ I said.
After some micky taking someone asked me about Betty Rubble.
’ I would go with Betty but would be thinking of Wilma’ I stated - more blank stares.
‘You crazy or drunk?’ I was asked.
'I know its Crazy - she would never leave Fred ’ said I - to more mumbeling of ‘Too much to drink’ and ‘Crazy’

 I was laughing at this point and was so sad that not one person at the table was a Dwarfer and had no idea what I was on about.

I just saw episode 2 of series X, and wow, it was amazing. Possibly the hands-down best episode of Red Dwarf. It’s certainly in my top 5 favorites, along with the ace rimmer episodes.

SO GOOD. This one alone made it worth coming back.

It certainly was as good an episode as any of the best. It nailed everything just right, as well as having some amount of continuity with canon. And it was very funny!

Bumping because Robert Llewellyn apparently announced three new episodes will be shot later this year.
