Now that we’ve all had the time to watch a handful of episodes, which shows have lived up to their pilot’s promise (assuming the pilot was promising) and which have not?
Reaper seems to be ok. Not great though.
Nothing else has held my interest. What’s your take on the new crop of shows?
Yeah, haven’t made an attempt to see too many new shows, but of the ones I have, Pushing Daisies is the only one I’ve really thought of trying to catch regularly.
I just posted about this in my Live Journal last night.
Here’s the slightly edited version:
Losers: Kid Nation - Didn’t hold my attention. I enjoyed the first episode, less so the second, and cancelled the season pass a few minutes into the third. Kitchen Nightmares - Does not hold a candle to the UK version. Really the only thing I like about it is G. Ramsay. Bionic Woman - Like Alias, but without the levity. I only watched the pilot and didn’t bother after that.
**Private Practice ** - Saw the Grey’s episode that acted as the pilot for this last spring, thought it would be worth a shot. Saw the first 7 minutes of the season premiere and quickly deleted any trace of it from my TiVo. Moonlight - Vampire P.I. in L.A.? Been there, but it was worth a try. Unfortunately, I thought it was a big snooze. No more for me, thanks. Aliens in America - Got great reviews, but I couldn’t make it past the first ten minutes. Painful and unfunny.
Winners: Torchwood - While I’m not loving the episodic stuff (various alien happenings) consistently, I really like the characters and the dialog. Chuck - Thoroughly enjoyable. The science/geek stuff is abominable, even to me who knows next to nothing, but the writing is sweet and clever and the characters are adorable. Journeyman - The more I watch it, the more I like it. The main drawback for me is one that’s typical of so many dramas: lack of communication between main characters in order to create tension. I find it frustrating and unrealistic. Reaper - I missed last week’s episode and haven’t seen last night’s yet, but based on the pilot, this one’s a yes. Life - I keep forgetting about this one, even though I’ve enjoyed the first two eps. The main guy was way quirkier in the pilot than he was in last week’s episode. I was afraid he’d be too much like Goren on Law & Order: CI, but that was toned down a lot, and I’m glad. Pushing Daisies - Because of the great reviews and the fact that it’s from the same mind as Dead Like Me, I have high expectations for this. The Pie-lette did not disappoint. Gossip Girl - I recorded it out of desperation for something to watch. These Beautiful People shows normally don’t appeal to me, but I’m hooked on this one.
**Dirty Sexy Money ** - This is, to my great surprise, my very favorite new show of the season. I was expecting hard-hitting cut-throat drama, and it’s not that at all. Love the stories, the characters, the acting, everything.
I gotta disagree on Aliens in America–I thought the pilot was very good and leagues better than Back to You (the only other new 1/2-hr comedy I’ve seen this fall).
I think the jury’s still out on Reaper, Chuck & Dirty Sexy Money, all of which started well but haven’t really found a proper groove to sustain their premises. I like Chuck the best of the 3 but feel DSM has more going for it in the long run (though I think it’s still largely treading water right now).
I might have to put Pushing Daisies in the same category, but it’s only aired one episode so far, so I’m crossing my fingers.
I enjoy Life but I’m a big Damian Lewis fan, so YMMV.
The only other new show I tried that gave up on was Bionic Woman, but I didn’t have very high hopes for that in the first place.
Journeyman - I saw one episode, got sick of the premise and knew it wasn’t going to change much.
Bionic Woman - I got through the first episode and it just didn’t grab me at all.
K-ville - the one from New Orleans, right? Yeah, I hated it.
Jury’s out:
Life - I really like the main characters, but I’m a bit worried about where the plot is going to go. They need an end point in mind.
Chuck - the first two or three episodes have all seemed remarkably similar. I kind of like it though.
Winners (and will therefore be canceled by mid season):
Pushing Daisies - watched the second episode last night and I liked it better than the first episode. It’s different and doesn’t appear to be a copy cat show.
Reaper - I like Tyler Labine (Sock) and the Devil. Those two make it more than worthwhile.
Dirty Sexy Money - My favorite new show in a long time. Peter Krause and Donald Sutherland have great chemistry and the second episode had some really top notch scenes.
Big Shots - I like the main characters, it’s fun. Guilty Pleasure sounds about right.
I agree that journeyman should tone down the personal drama, what with the cop brother who’s in love with your wife whom he used to date and your dead lover whom you keep encountering in your time travel episode for no apparent reason.
I hope they realize that and change things.
Reapers love story is annoying me. I have an easier time believing in escaped demons than in their behavior.
Pushing daisies feels fresh though , has that surreal quality that reminds me of amelie poulain. I’ll give it a chance.
Yeah I wanted to mention this show. On the surface it’s stupid and very sitcommy (see, I make up words.) But the characters are pretty good and the dialog is hilarious and semi-deep sometimes. The roommate (not the boyfriend from Roseanne, the other one) is hilarious, he reminds me of Niles Crane from Fraiser, but nerdy rather than cultural. Also hilarious is the arab(?) guy that can’t talk around women, and the 60’s-style nerd who thinks he’s a ladies man.
My reception messed up and I didn’t catch the beginning of this week’s episode, but I see that Darleen from Roseanne made a guest appearance, that was sort of neat.
