2008-09 season renewal list is in! What shall my summer catchup shows be?

The network renewal/non-renewal list is in. Not getting attached to new shows paid off for me, since the only shows I am sad to see go are Jericho (cancelled for the second time), Miss/Guided (which I saw 2 episodes of and knew it would get cancelled, but was still funny), and Journeyman – the one new show I watched every episode of, since I’m such a time travel junkie. I also watched the first episode of New Amsterdam and found it very disappointing. All of the other network shows which I like are back.

Now that I know that they’re here to stay, how are Eli Stone, Pushing Daisies (mainly, does the annoying Harry Potter narrator who won’t stop talking about the pie maker go away after the pilot?), Reaper, Terminator, Chuck, Knight Rider, Life, Lipstick Jungle …and WHAT is Dirty Sexy Money? I may have some good summer TV watching ahead of me…

I’d go with Reaper and maybe Pushing Daisies (though I’m afraid the narrator doesn’t go away), possibly Terminator (I’ve never actually seen that one), and skip the rest. I found Eli Stone extremely disappointing, and Lipstick Jungle was even more heinous, in its own way, than Knight Rider.

It all looks so overwhelmingly terrible put into a big list like that. All but 10 or so of those shows make me want to wipe out humanity due to their mere existance.

Ah, crap, I figured Journeyman would be in the canceled column but I didn’t know until just now. The fact that Sarah Conner made the cut is some consolation.

ETA: Woohoo! The Unit is back…figured it was doomed when it never returned from the strike.

Sad to lose Journeyman and New Amsterdam. A friend will be sad to see Moonlight go. Another season of Smallville? That is a surprise. They need to give that boy a cape.
**
fusoya**, Chuck and Pushing Daisies are fun. The narrator on Pushing Daisies doesn’t go away, but he actually really adds to the show. And the stories and characters are great.

Woo-hoo! Dirty Sexy Money is great! It’s everything the title says it is - and it has Donald Sutherland and Jill Clayburgh as the filthy rich heads of a spoiled messed-up heirs - William Baldwin as a married senator-hopeful (IIRC) in love with his transgendered paramour, an angry priest who hates the family but has to come back to them after he finds out that he fathered a child while not really following those pesky vows and he has partial custody,a couple of über-cool twenty-something twins and a spoiled impulsively-married-and-divorced daughter who’s in love with the family lawyer, played wonderfully by Peter Krause, who is the son of the now-deceased previous family lawyer who, it turns out, had an affair with the wife of his client (Clayburgh), and now the paternity of all the children is thrown into doubt.

Whew!

Man, I’m really glad this one is coming back. The sets are gorgeous, the writing is clever, and most of the acting is top-notch (with the exception of the female children, but maybe a little experience will improve them). I know they used to be on the ABC site, but I don’t watch TV on my computer, so I don’t know if they’re still available. But if they are, by all means, watch them. It’s really a fun show.

I’m glad to see that LIFE is coming back. The writing got better as the season went on, Damian Lewis is a fantastic actor, and Sarah Shahi is very good as well (and jaw-droppingly beautiful).

Burn Notice!

The show’s I’d recommend from last year that are returning:

Chuck
Reaper
Big Bang Theory
Sarah Connor Chronicles

Agreed! Getting in the mood by watching the re-runs on Thursday night on USA.

Psych and Monk are also coming back…

The only question is should I add “In Plain Sight” to my DVR schedule? Really liked Mary McCormack in West Wing…

Moonlight might not be gone. Apparently it’s been shopped around this week to see if any other network will adopt it. The CW seems interested from what I’ve heard. I kind of would like to see it go to a new home.

I’ll add my rec to the Chuck crowd. It’s a lot of fun.

I’ll miss Big Shots & Carpoolers. Both were better than I thought they’d be.

Hope Moonlight gets renewed.

I simply cannot believe Big Bang Theory made it past one episode. It must cost like, $15 per episode to make or something, and most of that goes to pay royalties on that ridiculous laugh track they use every time anyone moves an inch. “Guy walks into room” Laugh trak: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAAHA!!!

The commerical for Moonlight about 15 minutes ago flashed the words “Season Finale” at the end rather than Series…

Dirty Sexy Money and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, both good shows. I’ll also rec several cable shows (returning at various times of course): Dexter, Brotherhood, Californication, Big Love and The Tudors (currently showing season 2 on Showtime). There’s also a couple of others that are good: Damages (starring Glen Close) on FX and The Closer (starring Kyra Sedgewick) on TNT. Some of these aren’t brand new shows, but are close enough.

Another vote for Pushing Daisies and Chuck.

Interesting to see Scrubs was officially picked up by ABC. Thank god - I wouldn’t want to see this season’s finale to be the last Scrubs episode. That one stank up the room.

Susan

I was a big fan of Big Bang Theory, and watched every episode (it didn’t seem like the type of show that I’d miss if it was gone, and wasn’t a serial so I wouldn’t have to feel like I wasted my time if it got canned early). It is amazing that we still haven’t outgrown laugh tracks…I believe the rest of the block (Mother, Christine, 2.5) also use it.

I watched about 30 minutes of the pilot of Moonlight and predicted that it would be right behind Cavemen in getting cancelled…I’m surprised it has such a following…drinking blood out of wine glasses was the last straw for me.

Also surprised about all the love for Terminator. It just seemed like a show that wouldn’t work, which is why I didn’t bother. I’ll have to give it a chance.

In retrospect, I’m actually glad for the writer’s strike because I think it allowed pick-ups of shows that probably wouldn’t have been allowed a second season normally.

Pushing Daisies is amazing…and no the narrator doesn’t go away but he’s not really that bad once you get used to it. I love Chuck and DirtySexyMoney as well. Those three are my favorite of the new shows. I also caught one episode of Life and I have to say that I enjoyed it a lot. I think I might try to get it on DVD when it comes out to catch up.

I’m sad Big Shots was cancelled because I love Christopher Titus in any medium, but I knew it was going to happen.
