New smileys, again.

TubaDiva-- I finally got around to fixing up those two smileys I submitted a while back… They should be in your e-mail now.

For anyone else who wants to see them: They’re a head with a lightbulb above it, and a portrait of Einstein. I can’t post them on the Web yet, but I can e-mail them to anyone who asks.

I wait with bated breath.

That’s what this thread was about, being able to post image stuff without building separate web pages.

If any posters want to post images . . .

I will be putting up a couple of my own today, a baby and an arrow-thru-head smiley.
Might as well start a collection in one spot.

Thanks

Email it, with title (of existing or proposed thread) to: tshirts@sanfranmail.com

Your help is appreciated, tshirts, but if people want to submit smileys to us for caching on our site, we’ll certainly give them every consideration.

This was the part I was responding to:

Chronos wants to submit smilies, sure, but also just wants to show them off, let people see what he’s submitting.

Anyone else will want to sumit to you and also display as well.

This site is also for any image people want to discuss.
I’ll take any picture, not just smilies, that people want to share, but don’t want to bother making a web page for.

Back to smilies -
What would be nice, I think, is if we had a bunch, dozens, of smilies added en masse.
It’s basically the same work as adding one or two, if they all go in at once.
Also, all the discussion around the last new smilie ;jwould have dissolved if it had been just one of a new group.

**Please consider all the ones I put on that site for your next update. **
They won’t all be gems, but the more suggestions, the better the odds of some winners.

We’ve had suggestions before that math symbols would make good “smilies” for using in science threads.
So I will add a couple, just to see if they get any interest.
And I’m sure a lot of people will enjoy reading other suggestions in this thread.

Of course, of course.

It’s easier for us to cache these images on our server . . . easier for our folks to access.

And as we’ve said, these pages are what you, our Teeming Millions, make them.

OK, I know that smileys are supposed to have a transparent background… I tried to do that with mine, and when I tested them locally, they worked… However, I heard from Jerry the tech genius that the backgrounds weren’t transparent, and now seeing them posted at tshirts’ site, I see that he’s correct. Can anyone perhaps explain how they became un-transparent, or better yet, fix them so that they are transparent and stay that way? Mine are the two at the top of the page, einstein and idea.

Oh, and if anyone is actually kind enough to fix them, the background immediately behind Einstein’s hair should actually be white, not transparent, so as to provide contrast with the gray thread backgrounds.

The transparency is sometimes dropped by various packages such as Paint, or Imaging, and perhaps some email downloads, but is easily restored Microsoft Gif Animator, Microangelo, or most other gif animators.

I thought they were really clever, by the way.

Thanks 2[sup]20[/sup], tshirts… Feel free to just mail them directly to TubaDiva while you’re at it, since that’s what I’d do with them, anyway.

I guess that’s where the Einstein comes from? Your mentor?

I’ve got a few more smilies on the drawing board, but won’t put them up until this weekend.

Well, not my direct mentor, at least… He died before I was born, and I figure that I’m of the third or fourth generation of relativists. He is a bit of an intellectual “father figure” to all physicists, though.

By the way, thans for bumping this… I’ve been wondering about the status of the smilies, but I didn’t want to sound impatient.

Please let me know when they’re good to go and I’ll make sure they get to the right place for access on the system.

And thanks; it’s the creativity of our Teeming Millions that makes this site the cool place that it is.

I can’t hardly wait. I loved the last new one.

So far as I know, unless there’s some other weird glitches messing them up, the optimized versions graciously posted by tshirts on his web site (einstein_optimized.gif and idea_optimized.gif) are good to go. Let me know if there’s any more problems.

So if I got an idea for a smiley and made it up, I can send it in to y’all and everyone can use it?

Oh man, that is so cool… ::cackles::

Hey, maybe I’ll make a witch smiley for “::cackles::”. Or a lawyer smiley. Or a ChiefScott smiley

(Actually, I just got the idea for a true “evil grin” smiley… isn’t just evil enough for my tastes)

To be put into the same category as a witch a lawyer and an extra-evil grin.

Still, it might be cool. I was fond of Satan’s personal flame. He should turn that one in, but then every “semi-evil” punk would want to use it too.

I seem to be having a problem with smillies. Sometimes they appear and sometimes they don’t. Are there some rules or what. :confused

do they have to be inserted in the middle of text:( or
can they be used anywhere in the post:)

any assistance would be appreciated. Have pity on me I’m only 4 days old. Thanks

Cindi

IANDTD (I Am Not Dear Tuba Diva) but I have seen the trouble you are having with smilies. You are just not being careful enough. You are forgetting to put the trailing : on the end of some of the smilies like **:**rolleyes:  and **:**confused:  and you are using uppercase O instead of lowercase in **:**o :o.

You just need to hang around in here a little and practice and be more careful about the coding.
