Power restored to my building 7 hours and 42 minutes ago according to my flashing alarm clock.
Gas stations are 95% out, I’m down to 1/4 tank. Went to work and then sent us home. Apparently only “essential workers” should be out today.
Well, at least I have my AC and straight dope, that’s all I need to hold out for a day…maybe two.
Hey Magayuk you have power above 7? I heard from my friend who works in Richmond hill that power above 7 is all out along the 404 (and I’m guessing) to young st.
I remember the thread about “how many days worth of food do you have” but I never thought I would ever have to actually check and start bringing out my emergency stock (which includes about 6 cans of campbell’s chunky soup
It’s funny, I was driving and all of a sudden the radio station went out. So I flipped through the dial, found one that was still on, and the news guy came on and said the power was only out in the south part of the city. I drive north, the power’s out there. Turn’s out the power’s out in this county, the one south of us, and the one NE. I get a little further and hear another broadcast saying the power is out in the States as well.
The best part was when the reporter said we shouldn’t panic. Well I wasn’t, up until that point.
And of course, I wasn’t smart enough to fill up my car until it was actually on the red line, and none of the pumps were open. Fortunetly a very nice couple camping gave me some fuel that was supposed to be for their boat.
badmana yes, the power came back up here 1 am, but last I heard it wasn’t back up totally in Peterborough. I guess I should be smart and head out to the grocery store, since i have no food at all here.
I checked the stores around here…all down. I’m going to wait until later tonight and get some gas then hit the 24 hour dominon and stock up.
Power only seems to be up in my area, every other division is down. I hope we keep our power, it was pretty icky trying to go to bed sticking to the sheets and not having hot water to take a shower…
I have no water at all when the power goes out badmana, so I know what you mean. If it wasn’t for the river yesterday would have been pretty bad.
See, I am slow, so I don’t understand some things. If it was one grid that blew, and the power is up in some places, how come it isn’t back up everywhere?
According to the talking heads on TV the grid is being powered up slowly as generators are being brought online. I suppose it’s akin to slowly increasing speed in a car with a bad radiator, a sudden jerk will cause the grid to fail.
We’re supposed to expect rolling blackouts as they shift power to other divisions to give those people a chance to take showers and get their fridges back in working order.
We’re kinda lucky (knocking on wood), we were out of power for only 12 hours. Some places in the city haven’t gotten their power yet…and it’s 19 hours since this all started.
“Power back on in our house at 8 AM but no way to get to work. What a shame.”
(He lives in Queens and works in Brooklyn, so the only realistic way to get there is by driving, which is probably no fun with traffic lights out, or by subway through Manhattan, which isn’t running. Blackouts suck, but I think I’d rather be at home with no electricity than at work right now. At least I could sit on the back porch and read a nice book.)
