Lots of commentary tonight on happenings in the small town of Ferguson, Missouri - just north of St. Louis. Quick summation - in August a nineteen-year-old unarmed black male was shot to death by a white police officer after/during a scuffle. Case went to grand jury to determine if police officer should go on trial. Jury did not indict officer. Rioting is currently ongoing, stores being looted and burned, etc. Lots of commentary both in an MPSIMS thread and one in the Pit.
Several threads about upcoming US Thanksgiving holiday - where ya going, how’s the weather, whatcha cooking. Don’t know what you’ve missed but Loach was made a moderator a few days ago. Seems okay so far but he hasn’t been blooded yet.
Not arguing. It was an experiment that seemed to work. However it’s the job of TPTB to find the problem (and hopefully fix it), not you or I, so for the time being I can’t be bothered trying any other experiments. Maybe my warped little mind will think up a different combination of crossing my fingers and toes just right one of these days.
Have I noticed something new after a Quick-Reply? Seems like backing up used to get me back to the exact listing of threads that I had been looking at. Now I get a refreshed list even though it’s positioned in the middle of the listing.
Makes it tough to find where I left off in viewing the threads…plus even once I do I may have missed a few threads that have jumped to the top of the listing.
I blame you, Siam Sam*. Yours is the first post I’ve read this morning. Back to ATMB and all zapped. There’s really no point hanging around now, is there? Bah!
Well, slow to learn fool that I am, I’ve come into this thread again. I wonder if I’ll find myself zapped yet again when I click on one of the other boards?
So, it seems I was last on the board at 8:55am when the computer hadn’t even been turned on. Not exactly “zapped” because it’s not recording my last visit as right now but still …
That’s happened to me a few times too. Will have logged of at, say 12 noon, then logged on again at 9pm, but it says I was last on at 4pm and so everything up until 4pm is marked Read. That may be an even more annoying glitch, because if you don’t notice the last log-in time, you won’t even know to look for those earlier posts. You think this is all there was since 12 noon.
I’ve discussed this with Jerry, our tech guy. I regret to say there’s no simple fix - we can’t just rebuild a table or something. Evidently there’s a bug in the software. It would likely take significant time to get to the bottom of this and Jerry’s got a lot else on his plate, virtually all of which has a greater impact from an ROI standpoint. I apologize for the inconvenience, but for the present there’s not much I can do.
Hey, if we think we’ve at least identified the cause, that’s way ahead of where we’ve been for a long time. “We know what’s happening, but can’t fix it for the forseeable future” is still a lot better than “We have no idea what’s causing it.”
You guys did do some magic a couple of years or so ago that temporarily fixed things to a significant degree (rebuilding indices or something like that). How about a repeat performance? Even if it’s not a permanent fix and you need to take the system off-line once a year to do that magic, it would be an improvement.
Is that the time we were all allowed to start those really over-the-top threads for two or three days since everything during that window would be eliminated permanently once the change took effect? That was fun. We could do that again.
