New Tiger Woods Ad by Nike

I don’t think this has been done (and my apologies if it is already a thread).

What do you think of the new Tiger Woods ad from Nike featuring a dejected looking Tiger being questioned by the voice of his dad?

I think it’s great. Interesting way to capitalize on his transgressions. A perfect harmony of corporate interests and prurient interests (and human interest).

ETA: Ayyy!! It has been done (Nike begins Operation: SAVE TIGER INVESTMENT - Miscellaneous and Personal Stuff I Must Share - Straight Dope Message Board). I really checked, I really did. In any case, I like my thread better

Admitting up front that I am not a fan of Tiger’s, and whenever possible avoid buying/using anything Nike - I am terribly impressed at their willingness to take what many/most considered a negative situation, and turn it into a positive marketing opportunity. Brilliant.

Oh yeah - his dad was a class A asshole as well, and the use of his words which clearly had nothing to do with the recent revelations is misleading at best. But as an example of PR manipulation - masterful.

Agree totally. You said what I feel, better than I could have ever said it.

I knew you were going to say that. Of course, I would have said it better… :stuck_out_tongue:

That is clever. Use some b-roll so they didn’t have to shoot anything new, combine it with archive audio of his dad.

Awards have been won for less.

I’m… baffled. This appears to be an advertisement only insofar as he’s wearing Nike gear, and it ends with the Swoosh symbol. Otherwise, what am I supposed to gather from this? Tiger is sorry? Nike is Tiger’s father?
It probably doesn’t help that I misunderstood the OP and thought it was James Earl Jones playing the part of Tiger’s dad. I kept thinking, “What happened to the voice?!”

A cynical contrived attempt to save his endorsement deal. Are we supposed to feel sorry for Mr. Woods, being scolded by his daddy? No, we do not feel sorry. Because he looks like a big fat hangdog of an idiot in that commercial, thanks, Nike.

I think you’re confusing your reaction with what the ad is trying to convey. There is nothing cynical about the commercial.
