I think the answer is “yes.” I watch it sometimes and I cringe at how bad it is. The actress who plays MAX is the worst line reader I’ve seen on tv since Charlotte Rae.
True story: I watched two episodes all the way through because when I first stumbled across it I in all honesty thought they were doing some sort of spoof of bad sit-coms, and on that level it was actually pretty funny.
Then I realized that the whole show was like that, and there wasn’t any sort of “look at how bad we can be, wink wink” going on. It was just really terrible.
It was the other way around for me. I was looking forward to seeing Robin Williams back on TV, and it sounded like a promising premise. What I saw felt like a 30-minute McDonald’s commercial, and I thought that Williams and Gellar both looked uncomfortable. I’ll probably watch it again, because it’s got my favorite current TV series as a lead-in, but I don’t know how long I’ll be able to take it.
As for other new shows, the only one I’ve watched so far is Agents of SHIELD, and I enjoyed it a lot. The writing is witty and I like the cast. A friend whose opinions I value recommended Sleepy Hollow, but I haven’t seen it yet.
Goldbergs was pretty bad despite good performances from Wendi McLendon-Covey and George Segal.
I really dislike that they are just handwaving it by saying “This was in 1980-something” so it actually doesn’t have to do any actual thinking with its parade of lame 80s jokes.
I liked the Trophy Wife–was last night the pilot? It certainly didn’t seem to set anything up and just threw you into it, which makes me think it was the second episode.
Dads - I expected it to be awful, but it was even worse. I like Seth Green, and I think the vidya gaem company setting could have had potential if that was the focus of the show (obviously it wouldn’t be called Dads if that was the case) but overall it was just about unwatchable. Watched one ep, then stopped.
Brooklyn 99 - Looked really funny in the ads, hasn’t been anywhere near as good as I expected. Still watchable, though.
Sleepy Hollow - Had no expectations, it’s okay, nothing I’d miss if it was gone though.
Agents of SHIELD - Joss Whedon + Marvel Universe. Insert “o-face” here. Nuff said.
Goldbergs - I love the 80’s, and I love this show so far. Best new comedy I’ve seen this year.
Back in the Game - No strong opinions other than Maggie Lawson’s hair looks a lot better than it did in the last season of Psych.
Hostages - Only seen the first episode so far, but it seems interesting. I have a lot of stuff in that timeslot though, so I really have to make an effort to catch it on OnDemand, as I’m not able to DVR it. Not entirely sure if its worth the effort or not yet. We’ll see.
Crazy Ones - Same sort of situation as Hostages, as I’ll need to use OnDemand to keep up, and not sure if it will be worth it. Actually found Robin Williams funny, which I haven’t in a long time (though Mork & Mindy was a favorite when I was a kid). SMG seems kinda wasted in the role though.
Super Fun Night - Haven’t seen it, never will. Lead actress is utterly repugnant and unfunny. Oh look the fat chick’s having her clothes ripped off twice in the same commercial HAHA.
The Blacklist - So far so good. Seems like the perfect role for James Spader.
Betrayal - Bleh. Seems like someone took the plot of a Red Shoe Diaries or something like that, but took out all the nudity and added a stupid murder subplot.
Lucky 7 - got sleepy about 15 mins in to the first ep, next day didn’t feel any real reason to go back and finish watching the rest.
Michael J Fox Show - another conflicted timeslot, but haven’t gotten around to watching at all yet, will give a chance at some point
Once Upon A Time In Wonderland - hasn’t started yet, but wow, what a dumb title, yeah a spinoff, but sheesh. Why do spinoffs have to have the original show’s title in theirs anyway?
edit: forgot Trophy Wife - Way better than I expected, the adopted son is funny, weird how they changed the daughter between eps, though
Second episode. You can still watch the first one on Hulu.
I think there was a gap between the filming of the pilot and the second episode. I noticed that Ryan Lee (the kid who plays the older son) had his braces removed between episodes. And, as you noted, Gianna LePera was replaced by Bailee Madison.
Not meaning to be cruel to a kid, but those braces came off too soon.
I’m noticing how many new sitcoms feature parents reconnecting with their adult children: Dads, Mom, The Crazy Ones and Back in the Game.
I also caught The Middle for the first time in awhile. They’re still at the top of their game.
I was noticing how many shows are about adult children bitterly hating their Boomer parents.
His face is …distracting.
Dropped from DVR already after having given them a shot:
Dads
Brooklyn 99
The Goldbergs
Betrayal
Michael J Fox Show
The Crazy Ones
Rarely have I dropped so many, so soon.
Luckily there are enough good shows returning that this is no huge loss.
I checked out Agents of SHIELD. Fun premise, fun characters, Joss Whedon. First episode is pretty good. Ming-na Wen.
My only concern is Cobie Smulders as Agent Maria Hill. Is she just in the pilot or will she be a regular? Please say she’ll be a regular.
I watched the first episode of “Hostages” and didn’t hate it, but it lost out to “Blacklist” this week when they were on opposite each other (and I don’t care enough about either to DVR it). B- versus B- ; I wonder if I chose right?
She wasn’t in the second episode (although somebody else was). I think I read that Smulders will be an occasional guest star.
I’ll take what I can get!
The Millers sucked ass. Unlikeable characters, annoying laugh track, really creepy mother-son dance. One and done for me.
We just watched the pilot of “Super Fun Night” - I laughed my ass off. It was one of those shows where I don’t know why I was laughing, and felt sometimes that what I was laughing at wasn’t funny enough to be laughing at it, but I laughed my ass off anyway. I suspect Rebel Wilson (with her real-life law degree, no less!) is awfully damned funny.
She can’t really be a regular since HIMYM is still running. Maybe next year, if we’re lucky (and the show lasts that long, seems like it should be around awhile, but odder things have happened).
Okay, we just watched “The Crazy Ones,” too - didn’t laugh my ass off, but I was entertained enough to watch it again. It looks like they managed to rein Robin Williams in enough to make it tolerable - 23 minutes of him doing his schtick would have been too much for me.
We laughed out loud at The Millers, especially during the shower recollection. Put together well enough that I already feel I “know” the characters.
