Everything I read leading up to the premier said that the series was about an ugly girl who was hired by the big boss to try to deter his son’s womanizing ways, and the son was going to be doing everything in his power to get rid of her. This held true for the first half of the first episode.
Don’t get me wrong - I like it better with Betty and her boss as a team. I just don’t know where they’re going with it. I hope it lasts, I just don’t think it will.
I’ve been watching Runaway on CW, and although it’s decently done, I don’t know that it will last. I think it would make a good movie, but I can’t really see how they’re going to stretch it out into a whole season, let alone multiple seasons – either the dad will clear his name and the family can come out of hiding, or he’ll get arrested and the family will have to deal with that, or… what, they’re just going to drag it out? That’s going to get old really fast, it seems to me.
As much as I like Ron Livingston (his performance in Band of Brothers was brilliant) I’d be surprised if Fox brought back Standoff after the World Series.
It’s actually not THAT expensive: estimates put each S60 episode at roughly the same budget as most one-hour TV dramas. It’s close to $2 million per episode, which is about the same as C.S.I.
The pilot cost a lot ($7 million) but that figured in getting the actual “Studio 60” set as well.
It’s important to note that NBC’s other new shows haven’t exactly been setting the world on fire: “Friday Night Lights” and “Kidnapped” have been worse, and “Heroes” is the only one-hour show to be extremely successful.
Studio 60 is still drawing a wide audience, which makes it attractive to advertisers because it’s getting people from a variety of age and income groups.
Maybe this doesn’t count as new since it just finished its first season, but does anyone know if Eureka is being renewed on SciFi? I didn’t really expect to like it since the science is often so ridiculous, but the characters/actors won me over.
Crap. I had a feeling Kidnapped would suffer on week 3 – since they had it in a time slot up against “The Nine”, which seemed to be one of the most touted premieres. I was interested in both. (I watched Kidnapped on week 3 and recorded The Nine, which I haven’t watched yet). I liked the first two weeks of Kidnapped. The third episode wasn’t quite as good as the first two, but still I’m enjoying it. Jeremy Sisto is good in that role.
Also, it’s very likely that Studio 60 is going to at least be nominated for some Emmy Awards; while the viewership is still the bottom line, that sort of thing brings at least some added value to the show for the network, and also is a good way to get publicity to get more people watching. I’d wager (and hope, for that matter) we’ll end up with at least a complete season of it, with at least decent prospects for the future after that.
This is precisely why I rarely watch new shows the first year. If it goes through 13 or 22 eps and is renewed, then I’ll watch in reruns. I put Kidnapped on my DVR but never watched it. I am watching S60, but I figured being Aaron Sorkin it would get at least 13 eps.
Here is an interesting tidbit from the Hollywood Reporter about Katie Couric. Basically, after all the hooplah, CBS has sunk back to 3rd place in the evening news ratings.
While I doubt they will cancel the news, it will be interesting to see if Katie is still the anchor in another year.
