New update has rendered Chrome near-unusable. Any similar experiences and/or a fix?

So I updated to Chrome 35 (current build 35.0.1916.153) and am not happy with the results. Two things are broken:

  1. The graphics of the tabs are glitching pretty badly, as in snippets of other windows and applications are leaving artifacts and making the tabs unreadable. But more annoyingly…

  2. The lag. Chrome is not graphically keeping up with scrolling. I’ll scroll, but the webpage doesn’t change. I either have to wait about 10 seconds for it to catch up, or switch tabs and return, where the screen will be updated. It’s become onerous and time-consuming.

If I relaunch Chrome, the problem will be fixed for a few minutes, then go back to glitching up. I’ve searched the web (both Google and Bing) but I couldn’t locate any record of my issue is happening to anyone else. Is anyone experiencing this, or better yet, have a fix? Reinstalling Chrome is my last resort. Well, actually, my last resort is crawling back to Firefox, which is a complete resource hog, so I really hope that’s not my end result. Thanks.

FYI, I’m using Mac OSX 10.6.8. (Yes, I’m aware I can update, but my track record for updates—both Chrome and Android KitKat—have not been spectacular so far.)

I have the exact same set-up, but I’m not experiencing any problems.

Sorry to hear about your problem. I’m using a Chromebook Acer C720. (Chrome version: 35.0.1916.155 (Official Build 275529)). I also use Chrome on Linux (Ubuntu) and Windows 7.

Have you tried searching on “Chrome issues on Mac” ? There are a number of issues listed.

I have that version of Chrome and I’m experiencing none of those problems.

Running OS X 10.9.3 on an i7 Mac Mini though…

If you do have to switch, Firefox 30 is also fantastic. I have to use it for Netflix, since Netflix won’t run on my Chrome. Why browsers, why?

For the last few weeks I’ve been seeing “waiting for cache” and “waiting for app cache” in the status bar while pages sometimes take 20-30 seconds to load. Sometimes it’ll be “waiting for googleuserfonts”

Try disabling Settings->System->Use hardware acceleration when available.

Not an answer to OP but my worst gripe is that the distance measurement tool (via Map Labs) is gone. It saved/saves me and cow-orkers lots of fieldwork.

Is this it? Looks like its still there in the new Google Maps.

Exactly what I’d suggest. Though I’d also point out that Firefox 30 shouldn’t be a resource hog if you don’t install any extensions. It actually uses less memory than Chrome once you have 3 tabs or greater open.

That doesn’t mean it will be faster, however.

Oddly enough, the problem disappeared as soon as I posted the OP. Odd. If the issue returns, I’ll try to disable hardware acceleration. Thanks!

My hardware acceleration was already disabled, so I enabled it and things seem to have gotten faster.

Interesting. I noticed that my extension icons disappeared in my address bar, so I relaunched Chrome to get the extensions back and the problem returned. I’m now wondering if one of my extensions is causing the problem. I have running:

  • NotScripts
  • Adblock Plus
  • Google Docs
  • Vanilla Cookie Manager
  • HTTPS Anywhere
  • Web of Trust

Anyone hear of any issues with any of these extensions?

Does the new update still show thumbnails of the most visited websites on the homepage?

Nevermind.

The other day I was searching to decrease Firefox memory, especially since one has to restart every now and then because it stiffens up — and this remains no matter what amount of memory one is using, or what number of tabs — and I came across the best tip evah.
I had >300 tabs open and it was using >8GB of memory.

I removed AdBlock Plus and it uses 5GB of memory.
From Ghacks.

Bear in mind I’ve been using Firefox since 1 or 2, and this is the first major memory difference, despite all the tricks and promises. Including, ‘about:memory’ and ‘about:ccdump’ etc…

The remaining blockers, AdvertBan, Ghostery — and NoScript, at presently disabled, 'cause I read somewhere not to run AdBlockPlus and NoScript simultaneously — make it seem removing ABP has done no harm.
It would be a distraction to focus on my number of tabs here. The point is eliminating AdBlockPlus has decreased memory by 1/3.

Okay, my broken Chrome has gotten to the point that I can no longer stand it. I’ve done some searching, but apparently my Google-fu is off today. Can anyone provide a link where I can reinstall Chrome on Mac OS while retaining my settings and bookmarks?

If you have access to another computer, install it there, synch it with your current installation.
When you reinstall, synch the new installation and your bookmarks will transfer as will some but possibly not all settings.

You shouldn’t have to do that, though. Just install Chrome again, and it won’t lose any settings. Uninstalling Chrome should not remove any settings from the sync.

Just reinstalled. The problem is maybe 50% better, but it’s still an annoyance.

Just download an earlier version, and configure it to not update. I’m using Firefox 27, I refuse to accept 30.
