New Version Bug Reports

Once I log in, ( which I have to do every time like most people), I can view at most 4 or 5 more threads before I get re-directed to a database error screen. This persists until I reboot. The database error screen says that an email has been dipatched to nobody. Perhaps it should go to somebody? :stuck_out_tongue:

Add me to the ‘can’t stay logged in’ group (and I do, in fact, have Remember Me checked.)

Avant Browser 8.02, Build 110, running on WinXP Pro.

Weird. It shouldn’t have. MY message should be fouled up, but the rest of 'em should be fine.

Often I use the search engine to find all the posts I’ve made in the past XX days. I did so last night, and I just tried to do it again, but I was taken to last night’s results. I’m not getting any of the posts I made today. If it matters, my posts may all have been in CS.

I think the search ID is the same as last night, too. I seem to remember it being 2xxx last night, now it’s 2995. Here’s the search results URL from just now:

http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/search.php?searchid=2995

Ah. Say no more. My apologies, and thanks to all the staff for all the hard work.

It looks like the page is being centered rather than left justified, so everyone’s posts have shifted to the right.

On the good news front… today I was automatically logged in, so at least for me the cookies are now working. (Win2000, IE 6.0).

The Report Bad Post feature does not generate a dialog confirming that your message was sent, it just zips you straight back to the thread.
This is both unsatisfying, and likely to generate double messages as people forget whether they had actually fingered a post as intended.

Win98 and IE 6.0 user here.

I’m also having problems staying logged in. I seem to be okay as I make my way around the boards in a single session, but from session to session, I have to relog in.

And I’m another who is noticing an agonizing slowness. For a multipage thread, for example, it can take up to 15 minutes to load one full page of replies. Shorter threads load a little faster, but not very much. The board is, to me anyway, much slower than it used to be.

This new wide format runs off the right side of my Netscape window, no matter what size the window is. Noting to do with the post by Fenris, the main forum page is like that as well.

If you use Netscape, the tip I gave in this thread will fix it until the powers that be make a permanent solution.

The right side of the “quote” box appears to extend the width of a character-and-a-half beyond and “behind” the right side of the post box. I see this on post #53 in this thread [by the way: numbering posts is a truly useful idea]. The left side of the quote box is a half-inch (so to speak) to the right of the left side of the post box.

A couple other problems have already been noted by others - nothing major so far as I’m concerned.

Win97, IE 5.5 (yes, we’re cheapskates; if it ain’t broke too often. . .)

You meant 98, maybe?

Thanks. I’m normally on IE but it has a habit of freezing for no apparent reason, when that happens I switch to Netscape until I can reboot.

Smilies don’t seem to be working, at least for me. When I click on one of the smilies, nothing happens. If I try to enter a smiley from the keyboard like this

it doesn’t get converted to the picture. The “Disable smilies” box is not checked so that’s not the problem.

I have to log in occasionally - I haven’t detected a pattern yet.

I’ve tried repeatedly to include my MSN Messenger ID in my profile, but it won’t save.

I’ve disabled my sig, but it keeps showing up anyway. I try to remember to disable it on every post, but I don’t know if I’m succeeding.

Win98, IE6

Try this:

This probably isn’t a bug, but…

If you try to “View Source” on any of the pages, nothing comes up.

Does anyone know how the page is preventing me from viewing the source code?

It’s not the page:

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
<html dir="ltr" lang="en">

Squink – could you see all of the source, or did it end after those meta tags?

I’m trying to find out the CSS/style code they use to highlight the forum name in the drop-down list. For example, if you are in GQ and you use the “Forum Jump” list (at the lower right part of the page), the General Questions line will be colored blue, while the other options have a white background.
