New Version Bug Reports

An update, for those keeping score:

It seems the cookies are working again, at least for me.

Win98/IE5

Tonight is the second night in a row that I’ve hit the boards and not had to log in. I’ve not changed any settings within IE or the User CP, and I haven’t manually erased/altered any cookie files on my hard drive.

However there is something new. (Well, to me at any rate.) On the “Reply To Thread” screen, the text isn’t wrapping as it did the past few nights. That is, all the posts in the “Topic Review” below this text box are about one and a half (1 1/2) screens wide, at 1024 X 768 screen rez.

It’s possible I’ve just not noticed this before, and it may not be a bug in the vBB at all (some setting in IE I need to adjust), but it’s new to my eyes, and I figured I’d pass it along to Jerry et al.

I’m sorry if this has already been mentioned, I didn’t read the whole 3 pages.

I’ve seen mention of “mouseover” previews. Well, not in my house :frowning:
I drive a Mac with OS 9.2.2 and Netscape 4.79 (Yes, I know I could update netscape. I have bruises from the attempt)

FTR, I’m having the same issue Fenris is regarding page width. I’ve tried setting my desktop to various resolutions (up to 1280x1024) and while the text gets smaller, the wrap point remains the same – I have to side-scroll to see the last half-inch or so of text. This is with the new “Straight Dope Classic” skin; the VB default skin was the opposite extreme, only taking up the middle third of the screen.

Win98SE/IE6, for those keeping score.

I’m also occasionally de-cookiefied, but not as frequently as some others here – maybe once per session.

Incidentally, the page width problem goes away on my Win2000/IE6 laptop at work. Dunno if they tweaked things overnight, but there’s another data point for you.

In my previous thread here. I’m putting the link here simply because this thread might actually get acted upon.

My linked thread has the rationale behind why I consider this a serious bug, not just a feature request. Given the volume of posts on science, math, linguistics, and other fields where we need non-ASCII characters, not having HTML entities is simply shameful.

Here’s a weird one. I clicked on the ‘anyone ever pit bambi?’ thread.

The thread has opened and all the posts are there, but all the graphics are missing, all except the ‘post reply’ button the ‘!’ button, and the vbulletin title at the top.

I definately did not click on printable version. For those who don’t like the light blue it looks kind of cool.

The pop-up onMouseover for the thread titles (containing the body of the post) don’t work for threads with more than one page - TITLE (1 2) - or for the sticky posts at the top of the fora.

This has happened to me numerous times. The actual thread is irrelevant. Must have something to do with the board slowness, or some sort of contention that causes the page to load without the graphics.

This may be a problem with my internet provider, or someone locally hacking me or something but since it ONLY affects my usage of this site, I’ll post it here:

Almost every time I type “http://www.straightdope.com”, I get either redirected to a Google site saying “google can’t find that page”, or I get some weird, graphic porn site. Has this happened to anyone else when opening the straightdope front page? If it IS just me, anyone know how I can fix it?

The preview onMouseOver does not display any text wrapped in .

For example, look in MPSIMS at the thread “What have you learned from the SDMB?” The preview text contains “Recently I learned what means. (Basically, that what you have read…”

Opening the thread itself displays “Recently I learned what [sic] means. (Basically, that what you have read…”

Certainly the preview shouldn’t display markup tags, but perhaps it should display invalid tags (such as that).

You are infected with a browser hijacker, a form of adware/spyware. Get yourself a free copy of AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy (don’t forget to have each program check for updates), and clean all the spyware off your computer. Then use SpywareBlaster to block over 1000 different flavors of spyware.

Now this is a little strange.
I wrote a long post in the pit using MS word (word 2000) and then did a cut and paste into the reply screen. When I previewed all the apostrophes became question marks. don’t became don?t. I went back and checked, it was done correctly in Word.
Browser is Opera Version 7.21
Build 3218
Platform Win32
System Windows XP

Java Sun Java Runtime Environment version 1.4

I never saw this using the old version.

I’m sorry if this has been mentioned already, but is there any chance that we will be able to resize the type on the page while reading it? My eyes aren’t so good, so I usually increase the font size through the IE View dropdown, but this hasn’t worked since the new format rolled out.

thanks,
j

I thought Rick’s problem might have been because of Word using “smart quotes” (curly quotes), but I’m copying from Word 97 and I’m having no trouble seeing the quotes.

I just noticed a moderately severe bug. I’m using the “Straight Dope” style and all the posts in the “topic review” that appear below the text entry area have their lines wrapped to about 50% wider than my 800x600 display so that I have to scroll to see the right third of the posts. They’re wrapped to screen width in the initial thread display, so there’s no single wide post causing this. My software is Win98, IE 6.02800.1106.

I believe this is accurate; Squink suggests the same thing a few posts above yours, and I’ve noticed it also. It happened again with the brief outage this morning: While I’d been able to return to the boards and not have to log in previously, after the outage, my ID was lost. I assume this is because the session cookie has some sort of unique identifying code, a date and/or time flag or some such, that gets updated when the board is reset, so your previous cookie becomes invalid. That’s just a guess, though. In any event, I don’t really think it’s a bug so much as an unfortunate side effect of the continuing growing pains.

I don’t know if this qualifies as a bug or not, and since I haven’t seen anyone else mention it, I’m beginning to wonder if I’m missing something obvious. But anyway…

My time setting is screwed up. My User CP is set for Pacific Standard, which is GMT -8 hours. But the time display at the bottom of the page says “All times are GMT -7.”

Not a large problem, but slightly vexing. Anyone else getting this?

I notice we are back to the ghost smilies, with no Wally, Jewish Guy or Head Smack or Dubious; I’m using Straight Dope theme.

For the record, I haven’t had to log in for almost a week.

Here’s a very low priority bug: when displaying a thread with the “Straight Dope” style, the bottom border of a post varies in depth. It can go from a thin black line with space between it and the next post to a wide black line that fills that space.

Someone has bumped this old thread, which was started by a user who changed her name. You can see her new name in the thread, but on the CS page her old name is showing as the person who started the thread.

That bug I reported in the second post above this one may be a problem on my own system. I noticed that if I highlighted that area, then dehighlighted it by clicking somewhere else on the page, the entire area is then filled.
