The ‘dubious’, ‘smack’, ‘wally’, and ‘happy orthodox jewish man’ smileys do not show up for me and I didn’t see anyone else mention this.
I’m using IE 6.0 on WinME.

In case the techs haven’t seen it yet, the “Database Error” page contains the following information:
Many technical error logoffs (3-4x/week)-I haven’t posted to this thread before to give time for fixing, but the problem remains, otherwise I stay logged on. Dirt slow page loading-sometimes graphics do not load at all-signifying a crash is about to occur. I’ve tried the different page display styles-currently using Brightlinks. W98SE-all patches installed/ IE6.
In this thread, someone forgot to close a bold tag. After that, every post is in bold, except for quotes. This is certainly a bug, as the old version automatically closed all open tags.
Nevermind that last post. Apparently it was a browser hiccup. It’s all good now.
I don’t think it is a browser glitch as I am consistently seeing it in this thread:
http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=237675&page=3
And I can also still see it in the above linked Jupiter thread.
The thread Pasteurized eggs managed to lose its OP. This used to be common, but I haven’t seen it lately.
There is no “report this post” button (esclamation mark) on the empty page, and hitting either reply button does not allow the posting of a reply, but rather informs me that the link is invalid, and suggests I might wish to email the webmaster.
Does anyone actually look at webmaster email?
I don’t know if this one has been reported yet - I haven’t read the whole thread.
When one subscribes to a thread, the mail informing the user that there is a new posting now contains the text of the posting (it didn’t do this under the old system). The problem is that spoilers are sent as cleartext, which is bad for people who don’t want to read spoilers. It would be good to strip spoilers out and replace them with something like SPOILER.
As an aside, sending the posting in the mail is of limited utility to me. It doesn’t save me from having to go to the thread, since the system only sends one posting since my last visit. When I visit the thread I end up seeing the posting that was mailed to me anyway.
Same situation here. WXP, IE6. Even though the browser is set for the “larger” or “smaller” type, only some things like buttons and borders change, but the message text stays the same size.
Frequently when I preview, I get the following error message:
If I preview again (no changes), it works fine.
Same thing for me on the smilies. Dubious, Smack, Wally, and Happy Orthodox Jewish Man are broken. They show only the red X.
A week or two back I printed something from the “Printable Version” and “long” lines were truncated by the right margin. I just checked a thread chosen at random and the problem also occurs on the computer screen of a Printable Version - lines of text are truncated at the right margin line. No more than a few characters.
This is like the problem I reported with quote boxes, so with luck the fix is the same.
Pet the hamsters for me - they “done good” in the recent fun and games (though I betcha the next contract negotiation will be tough).
Still IE 5.5, Win 95, printing to a Toshiba eSTUDIO 45 photocopier, still wish I lived in a DOS environment. . .
[ Several related bugs that came to light when I posted to this thread:
The anti-garbage filter for new posts doesn’t count text enclosed in brackets. For example, if I hadn’t used trickery to generate this post text, I would have been blocked with a warning to type at leat two characters.
The software apparently folds certain kinds of markup (numerical character references) , so that my trickery only works once - if you try to copy my post, you’ll get the anti-garbage warning.
Unlike the old version of VB, the new version produces garbled quotes if you nest things improperly. In particular, see my post in the above thread, which would not have been garbled in the previous version. ]
