new version of "The Time Machine"

I saw the old one with Rod Taylor (from 1960) some weeks ago and I liked it.

Are the new version any good ?

Which one do you like best ? (if you have seen both)

I’ve seen both versions, and I have an interesting, if off the wall take on them. Namely:

1960 version: The Eloi are beautiful blond caucasians living in an idylic paradise (well, except for getting eaten by Morlocks). If they had had a beach, it could have been Southern California.

2002 version: The Eloi are people of color, some lighter some darker but on average resembling the peoples of the Phillipines. The Ubermorlock is, well, the whitest white guy you’ll ever see. This remake theme would have been perfect as one of the racially allegorical SF films made in the early 70s (Planet of the Apes, The Omega Man).

Finally, the remake features a lead actress braless and pantiless in a thin silky gown. I’d give it four stars.

An excerpt from my LiveJournal:

The Time Machine is the second-worst movie of the year. I’d say it’s the first, but A.I. was so fucking bad it carried over from last year.

We saw it for free and I still wanted a refund.

I think that sums up my take on it.

The original t’aint bad. I’d recommend it far before I’d recommend the new version. Of course, I’d recommend sticking lighted matches in your eyes before I’d recommend seeing the new version.

There’s a really, really long thread on this subject somewheres in here, started the week after this crapola movie opened. I tried to do a search for it and it froze my computer up; if someone else wants to link to it, I’d be much obliged.

I’m sure portraying the childlike (by which I mean stupid) Eloi, who exist only to be eaten by the fiendishly clever Morlocks, as people of color would have gone over real well in the '70s.

Of course if you change the whole damn theme of the story, it doesn’t really matter.

Lasy Sunday, I went to see E.T. and ended up seeing “The TIme Machine”
