I’d like to get a new wireless mouse, and have had a couple in the past, but I’ve always had problems with the range from the mouse receiver. I’ve had a mouse that starts acting erratic if the mouse is more than three feet from the receiver. I’d really like to be a little more mobile than that. Can you folks recommend a mouse? And, generally speaking, is there any indication given on the packaging of a mouse’s range? If so, what does one look for?
In my experience, Logitech makes good mice; I’ve never had a problem with mine being out of range (though I’ve never really tested it). Here’s a current good deal on one. Somebody on that page mentions a range of 10-15 ft, but I can’t tell if that’s a question or an answer.
I’ve been using a Logitech MX5500 keyboard/mouse combo for about three years now, and love it. So much so, in fact, that I bought another set so that I’d have the same setup at work. It’s bluetooth, and I just tested the mouse range- I got to about 20 feet away before I couldn’t see the mousepointer. My environment’s a lot better here at the office- at home, I’ve got a lot more electronic interference, so the range is probably a good bit shorter. It will very occasionally lose connection, but all I have to do is turn the mouse off and on and it immediately hooks back up.
I have the Logitech M305 wireless mouse, and it works with no problem from 25 feet (I had no idea!) away, with the microwave oven running. It has the nano receiver (USB dongle sticks out only about 1/4 inch), which is nice since you don’t have to worry about knocking it out. It can run a keyboard off the same receiver, simultaneously with the mouse, in Windows at least (I haven’t done this, personally). The USB part fits inside the mouse, if you’re travelling and don’t want it in your computer on the plane. The scroll wheel pivots left/right to scroll sideways, as well as scrolling and clicking.
My wife has the same model, and likes hers as well. We can both use our mice at the same time, with no interference. The one issue I have is clicking the middle button/scroll wheel. Often I scroll right instead of getting a clean click, and it’s harder to press than I’d like. I’m learnig to click a little to the left to compensate (and it may be that I cause the problem by naturally pushing to the right a bit).
This model has been replaced with the 310 or 315, which I think is just a different shell.
I just got a Logitech ex 100 on sale for $14.99 keyboard and mouse, It has the wired dongle thing that sits on the desk, but I mainly got it to cut down on the wires in my way. Just a plain optical mouse with a scroll wheel/button.
Still works fine when the receiver falls on the floor.
I received my mouse yesterday, and I couldn’t be happier. It works from across the room, and it works from the kitchen which is around TWO corners. I’m impressed!
