New WoW General Discussion Thread 6/8/10

Thanks I will track down that link.

If true, this may explain why my AOE tanking sucked last night. Either that or I was way more dependent on my addons than I thought.
But you’ll make them free for guildies with mats, right? right?
Yes.. yes I will, as soon as I build up my stock of ink again. Went through four and a half stacks of ink for all my characters and had to go out for more herbs to get the ink for the last few glyphs. Kind of sucks that they upped the mat cost from one ink to three.

Kind of annoying that Bartender isn’t showing me tooltips, hoping that get fixed soon. Threat Plates looks a little different from what it used to, but I think I can handle it.

My babymage Cyranus has some inks and a lot of the major glyphs, although I have no idea how much carried over. Nothing from Northrend yet, though.

Didn’t get around to playing at all myself last night–my computer crashed towards the end of the first attempted installation of the new patch, so I had to start over from scratch. By the time that was done and the next chunk of data was to the point where I could log in, it was already pretty late. Fingers crossed that more bugs will be fixed and more addons will be updated by the time I make it home tonight–I was already able to install a slew of updated addons last night, which leaves me somewhat sanguine. (Thank you, Curse Client–I can’t even imagine manually tracking 50 different addons anymore.)

I notice that the Revenge threat bug wasn’t included in the official list of known issues–at least not at the point when I checked. Anybody heard any further details? Has it been fixed or is Blizz just oblivious despite people reporting it?

How broken is Auctioneer? The article I saw had a retardedly hyperbolic title, because IIRC it was written by WI’s resident powerselling asshole, but when you actually read it, the only features that were disabled were things like batch posting and automatical cancellation of undercut auctions (i.e., things that don’t matter to people who don’t use borderline-inappropriate levels of automation).

You’ve probably already figured this out, but that’s not the case. The update downloads the patch; after that, it still has to install.

FYI, you will be able to see the downloader when it’s running. It should come up as soon as you exit WoW (IIRC, by default it will not run at the same time). If you shut your computer down when you exit the game, it will never have a chance to run. You can also start the downloader manually–I did this a day or two before the patch to ensure that my download had finished. I run Windows, and I found the launcher for it in the same directory as the main WoW exe.

Sing it with me: “God damn the pusher man…”

Yes. Among the documented changes were that all Relics would be changed to work more like ranged weapons in terms of the stats they provide. Instead of having some sort of random Equip bonus related to abilities or Talents, they will now give standard stat bonuses and include gem slots.

Actually, this was announced and discussed pretty much everywhere. It has to do with the stat conversions on gear.

A small request (which may seem a little silly coming from someone notorious for posting walls of text): Could anyone who wants to post a full spec please do so under a spoiler tag?

They could lose *half their subscribers *and still have six millions. I don’t think it’s anything to worry about.

To open your map, hit “m” on your keyboard. If Quest Helper is broken, you can enable the in-game quest tracking system, but that works somewhat differently (and, IMO, doesn’t have as nice of features).

This is one of the few changes I’m 100% excited about.

wow.joystiq.com is the new address of WoW Insider, a website that many of us here frequently read and link to. It’s a bunch of blog articles about the game, and some of them are about addons, but it’s not specifically a place to get addons. That’s what Curse is for.

I highly doubt that. A 16-slot Netherweave Bag run 5g to 14g and they’re more than enough for a fresh alt. IMO, the only way Frostweave Bags will become popular for anything other than max-level characters is if they *drop *in price, especially now that no classes need to use up bag slots with things like speciality bags for ammo or Soul Shards.

I hate to bust the bubble of a good rant, but aren’t you the person who’s choosing to play an MMO on a connection with shitty speeds and a monthly bandwidth quota? For someone on a normal cable or DSL connection, today’s patching wouldn’t have taken more than a couple of hours.

Make a post to the Technical Support or Customer Service forums and you should be able to find someone to help you out.

I think the icon display is new with the patch. Showing a big icon usually means that something important just happened from your spells/skills/talents, and sometimes you might have a temporary buff or power while the icon still displays. Players who use lots of addons might have already had an add-on that did this, but Blizzard loves to incorporate those ideas into the game.

Well aware, and my computer runs 24/7. The downloader was running, but every time I looked at it it just said “Waiting…” and never actually started the download. I never cared enough to try to solve the issue, but I didn’t expect 4.0.1 to be 4.76 GB.

Rather than reply to all of the reply-worthy stuff I’ll just share my thoughts from patch day:

Glyphs: Let’s just say I made 10k gold yesterday, and could have made much more had I been more agressive in buying up the lowballed stock on Mon night. Bought about 300 glyphs for 3g per (or less) and sold many for 60-100g. That’s some ROI… If anybody needs glyphs feel free to send a mail to Darland. The mats are more than they used to be, but hopefully herb prices won’t go up to high. Almost all of the glyphs converted, but a handful (maybe 10-12 total) become “Charred Glyph”. Quickly learned all available glyphs for my toons, and hopefully will sell off the rest while the market is still hopping. I’d expect long-term prices to settle around 30-50g per glyph (considering the mats are around 15-20g, it might be on the lower end of that).

Hunter: Focus is gonna take some getting used to. It felt like a nerf, but I think that’s because I didn’t take the time to re-gem (tons of Crit gems) or reforge any gear. MM is a bit more dynamic, but I wasn’t really enjoying BM. Need to get some new pets to try out. I think changing gems to AGI and reforging haste/crit to mastery should get MM back up to a reasonable level.

DK: Definite stam buff (53k unbuffed in Dal, IIRC). Threat seemed pretty good, but I didn’t have Omen or ThreatPlates turned on. Want to reforge a bit more mastery to see how the self-shields work (pocket Disc Priest ftw). I hear Unholy DPS got a big ol’ buff, so I hope to try that out soon.

UI: Loving the new proc notifications, both the auras and the button light-up effects. Very nice. New raid UI is OK, but probably not enough to replace Grid. The guild UI is solid (loved ranking by achievement points, for example), and I really like the new spellbook as well. Not as keen on the character screen.

Auction Addons: Quick Auctions was dead, but can be revived using ConfirmStartAuction (or something like that). Auctioneer seemed broken, but the updated Auctionater worked well (and I actually think I like it better anyways). I think long-term requiring manual button presses for each listing or cancel is a good thing and will cut down on botting. I was undercut a lot less, and a lot more slowly, than usual (hence, more gold).

Other Addons: Plenty of broken stuff, but a good number worked out of the box. Plenty of LUA errors, but nothing that won’t be fixed in time.

Okay, can someone explain the new riding skills to me? I have Cold Weather Flying, but not the fast flying whatever it was called. So now I buy Artisan Riding, which brings me to 280% flying speed, and then Master Flying brings you to 310%?

Also, ammo: I heard that ammo bags were being converted to a normal bag. But I still have my bag with ammo in it and it says it’s a quiver. Is that not being changed until the actual expansion? Or is it because I still have ammo?

You shouldn’t have needed a quiver since…3.2? Somewhere around there, ammo was changed to stack in lots of 1000 and the bonus haste was given to Hunters as an inherent property. You’d get more out of having a 16-slot bag with 8 slots of ammo than keeping a quiver around. They’re still in the game but they’re very very obsolete.

Yep, I made some pretty nice money on my little server as well thanks to my scribe. That was my experience as well. Lots of short termers hopping into the glyph market as well. It took me a few rounds of trial and error to get things set up properly since the patch seems to have broken nearly everything. At the moment, glyph books of mastery are going for hundreds whereas they were going for maybe 30g before the patch, and herbs (when available) are selling for double (40g for lichbloom!).

Apparently, though, Deathwing has kidnapped every lock’s minion and replaced them with Folgers. This was unsuccessful, as the lock community is now up in arms about it. My lock guildies were VERY unhappy. :frowning:

I spent some time pewpewing a target dummy on my MM hunter, and I’m definitely going to need to buff my shoot’n’scoot skills. I did get to reforge hit into mastery since I had gobs of it – and I don’t know if anyone else’s noticed but I was sitting at 259 hit (hit cap for me being 263) and I still had a 0.00% chance to miss on a lvl 83 mob. This is without any +hit talents in my new tree. Pre-patch, those four points would result in a small but definite chance to miss. Weird.

It feels seriously weird on my holy priest to not take Spirit of Redemption. :stuck_out_tongue:

I like the new UI for the most part, but the new procs are throwing me off. I suspect I’ll be moving away from sUF and ouF_Lyn style frames to HUD style frames so I can have things tracked better. Guild UI is <3

Ha ha! Well because I’ve been grinding Sha’tari rep, I’ve got plenty of netherweave also. So I’m still in a good spot, bag-selling wise. And my bank alt’s bank is practically empty so I’ve got lots of storage space.

My Justice Points!

After copying all my pre-patch WoW files over from my C drive to my E drive which has more space, I was able to get the patch downloaded in less than 2 hours. When I logged on for the first time last night, my screen was laggy and had alot of unrasted buildings, streets and walls and unreadable screed where words should have been…logged out and back in plus minimized and re-opened the window for the game…it done fixed itself! Yay!

But alas, was only on for a few minutes (Yeticalayla) to check the mail to find the conversion of points, look at my talent tree, fill most of it out with this predesigned talent tree and then my video card crashed and locked my computer. Being 1:30am…called it a night.

So, from what I have learned thus far, this is how I am going to set up my Ret Pally:

From Elitist Jerks, I found this post regarding 4.0.1

From that post, there is a link to a you tube video and a talent tree for Ret Pallies that has been tested with success to some degree.

And then, I will aim for the upgrades listed in this thread - Elitist Jerks Ret Pally setup - 4.0.1 Haste has become equally valuable if not better than Crit now…so I maybe picking up some new gem recipes to reflect this. Still to new for me to be certain about everything…except that I better go on a shopping spree for T-10 Tank gear and primordial saronite for Blacksmithing and that quest for Shadow or Frostmourne weapon.

Yeah, the hit cap changed. It’s now… something less (240ish, IIRC). I was right at 5% pre-patch (capped with the MM talent) and am now at 6.something%.

Trying to decide whether to get capped via gems and reforge to mastery/haste/crit or gem for AGI and reforge to hit cap. I think I’ll probably go the latter, since AGI is probably worth more than anything else per-point right now. Haste might actually be pretty valuable, since the GCD is now 1s for hunters (getting SS down to 1s would be nice).

Also finally figured out why everything felt so laggy and slushy - the new queued attack system was implemented, but not the ability to control it. So if you hit an ability during the GCD it will still send out that command and fire it off next, whether you want to or not. Boo.

Forgot to reply to this one earlier. Some abilities that only proc with certain conditions now have alerts for them. Victory Rush is a Warrior ability that only becomes available after you make a killing blow on a target that is of the right level to give you Experience or Honor. You were always getting it active after a kill–you just didn’t have an alert for it.

Wish you would have said something–we could have warned you, because you can see the size of the patch while it’s downloading. These pre-expansion launch patches are always fucking monsters, too, because so much is changing. Dollars to donuts there’s stuff in there that isn’t even going active until Cata, too.

Grats on the haul! I’m kicking myself for forgetting to stockpile all the glyphs I wanted to learn as soon as the patch went live. As-is, I’m sure I can find someone in the guild to make anything I need, and I can harvest the mats myself, but what a pain. Although I guess the new guild UI lets you search by recipe for crafters, so that’s something!

Bingo! Artisan Flying benefits from faction discounts, too, so be sure to train it in the place that will give you the biggest benefits. The WoWWiki page on Riding should have details on which faction’s trainers are where.

I’d heard this, too, also about bags for Soul Shards. Dunno when the change is happening, but I guess not yet.

Last I heard, MM was at the bottom for DPS in 4.0. The new hierarchy was BM > Surv > MM. 'Course, that was also before the final damage pass, so I don’t know if things have shifted again since then.

Yes, GC had already stated that this was going to be the case. Anything less than a second (IIRC) before the GCD is up will be locked in. Fucking swell for people like me who hammer their buttons to make sure everything goes in as soon as possible after the cooldown and also rely on procs like Sword and Board and Revenge. Great job, Blizzard.

The GCD thing isn’t set in stone yet, so I understand. Bad move, though, it’s got to be infuriating to a lot of players.

No, this probably won’t be permanent. It was something they “had” to put in place to break an exploit. Because somehow apparently it’s too fucking hard to make it so that a new command overwrites the previous one in the queue.

Quite.

What was the exploit? The “fix” sounds annoying.

Yep. You don’t need Cold Weather Flying to buy Master Flying–they’re apples and oranges. Buying Master Flying upgrades all your flying mounts, regardless of their individual speeds, to 310%. Cold Weather Flying lets you fly in Northrend (at whatever speed you can). The Azerothian flying you get when Cata comes out (250g, available at level 60) does the same thing as Cold Weather Flying, except for Azeroth. Your flying speed is irrelevant.
