New WoW General Discussion Thread 6/8/10

Err?

Can you give examples?

kushiel, do you mean Invasion Point: Cataclysm? If so, it has nothing to do with the coming expansion…it’s been there since the beginning of Burning Crusade…it’s just a dramatically-named spot.

I don’t imagine that Azeroth’s coming Cataclysm is going to affect Outland too much (considering that they’re not even in the same plane of existence, let alone the same planet).

That might be. Both of our computers, after running overnight, are only at 58% with extremely slow progress, and that’s just to update to 4.0.0 from 3.3.x. Right now mine’s claiming 15 hours to finish the process but it’s said anywhere from 60 minutes to 29 hours to no estimated time because it’s running so slowly. It’s complaining about being behind a firewall; I thought I’d opened the appropriate ports but the official WoW support site has nothing on configuring a Windows 7 firewall, which is somewhat different from the Windows XP that they posted. I did use advanced configuration to set individual ports, but don’t know if I did the outgoing right - it’s listing it as port (the ones I specified) for local, and 80 for remote.

I’m going to be tearing my hair out shortly.

OK, word to the wise - if you need to reinstall on a new computer, just log in to your battle.net account and pick the “download game client” option. You still have to do the patch after 4.0.0 from there. My husband did that out of desperation, after much Googling, and he was up and running in less than a couple hours. :smack: I’m at 25% of that install now.

jayjay, they took out the class quests. I think the shaman totem quests qualify as such, and you should be able to train those instead.

This is what I meant! Plus there’s a few enemies named Cataclysm Hound and stuff like that.

Coo’, good to know.

Remember, Outland was already rent asunder, which is why there’s empty space instead of seas. If anything experienced a cataclysm, it was Outland. Azeroth will be experiencing some inclement weather by comparison.

Ugh. Since the patch I’ve been having a problem where the default quest tracker fails to show up for some toons, but not others. It seems to be an addon-related problem, but since all of my toons are using essentially the same addons, it’s puzzling why some were affected and others weren’t. On the affected toons, I could open my quest log, select a quest, and click “Track”, and that quest would appear in the quest tracker like it should. But then as soon as I’d complete part of it (say, collect that first item) it would vanish again. Meanwhile, on other toons it behaved properly.

So I went to work on one of my affected toons, my draenei mage. Disabled all of her addons and logged her in (heh - logging in and out was suddenly amazingly fast); accepted a quest, and it appeared properly in the quest tracker. Logged out, enabled one addon, logged back in, quest tracker still shows up. Lather, rinse, repeat, turning on one addon at a time, hoping to nail down which addon was causing the problem. About 3/4 of the way through this process I got DC’d, and when I logged back in the quest tracker was gone again. sigh Abandoned the test quest, reacquired it, and the quest tracker showed up once more. Considering that I eventually got every addon turned back on and the quest tracker remained after that, I started to suspect that the multitude of disconnects since the patch may have corrupted something. Especially after I logged my mage out at the end, quit the game, then relaunched and logged her back in, and the damn quest tracker had vanished again. Then I logged in a different toon on another server, a toon that hadn’t previously had this problem, and his quest tracker was missing.

So I said, “Screw this, I’m not going through this process for every single affected toon!” Then I renamed my WTF folder to force the game to create a new one. Of course, that meant losing all of my addon settings, which meant a tedious process of reconfiguring all of them, but at least that wouldn’t require logging in and out 4357 times. The most tedious reconfiguring is going to be putting all my Dominos action bars back where they belong, but at least I only have to do that once for each class; once I’ve done it for one toon of a class I can just save a profile and then load that profile for my alts of the same class. And I use the same layout for a few different classes.
I may have said this last year, but I really despise the people who just stand around in Goldshire et al waiting for other people to put the fires out, so they can just smash the pumpkin when it’s over. Mainly because if those people would contribute some effort, we might actually put the fires out instead of failing because there aren’t enough people trying. I also think they need to rework that event so that it doesn’t require so many people to succeed. Frankly, hardly anybody seems to understand the bucket brigade concept. It’s also maddening when you repeatedly douse the same flame, and every time the HH instantly reignites it.

Good news - my mage’s “discover Thunder Bluff” problem has been resolved, and she now has her “the Explorer” title  Even better news, that damn “open ticket” frame is no longer covering up all her buffs.

ETA: Also, late last night there was a “non-critical update”. I don’t know if it’s related, but I was in Dalaran a little while ago with almost no discernible lag. I also hit something like 79fps in Ironforge.

I don’t know if they’ve buffed the drop rates for the special holiday drops, but my priest has recevied at least five squashlings this week, and my pally has gotten three I think. Even my level-4 bank alt got one.

There also seem to be a lot more HH mounts running around Dalaran and the world than I remember from years past.

My pally got the Hallowed Helm today, so the only achievement he has left for the title is the wand transformation (I haven’t really been trying with that one yet). That should be easy.

Daaaaamn. RDF put me in H:HoR and we got spanked. Not surprisingly - since I was one of the only people who stuck with it until everyone decided to pack it in I had the most dmg done and my dps is only 2200. We just couldn’t get all the mobs before the LK caught up. I did, however, live long enough to see Jaina Proudmoore actually die. I guess she doesn’t believe in bubble hearths! I Feigned Death, and the game just gets you for 800000 dmg to autokill you. Wonder why that number?

How do you do the Wand Transformation achievement if you don’t have anyone around to hit you with the wands? Just advertise in General ‘1g for [certain wand hit]’?

I offer trades - what I have for what I need.

NOT IMPRESSED WITH NEW PRICES FOR HEIRLOOM GEAR.

I was actually in range to get some of it before the patch. Roar! I know they tweaked it for what it should be at 85, but argh. It seems like every pre-Cata change they did in 4.0 is a bad thing compared to a good thing. They’ll be good changes once Cata drops, but for now, I’m frustrated.

I’ve bought all my heirlooms with the Argent Crusade thingies; they’re still the same price. Of course, those are extremely grindy, but what can you do?

Grindy, sure, but you can finish all of them in 30 minutes. If your gear is mostly 232 you should be able to solo Chillmaw, and finding a team is still not too hard even if you can’t. (I watched a mage tear Chillmaw apart the other day. It was a little scary.) I can solo Chillmaw and I skip the Commanders because they are evil without a group, and I do all the other quests.

Now that the four quests with the chance for an extra seal have a 100% chance, getting seals is pretty quick. Without Chillmaw and the Commanders, you’re getting 9 seals a day, so one heirloom is 7 days. If you can do Chillmaw, that’s 12 seals a day for 5 days for one heirloom. Sadly you top out at 14 seals per day if you do Commanders as well, so you can’t get it down to 4 days for a single heirloom.

Hey

  1. Under “currency” I’ve lost all my honor points

  2. I have auctioneer back, but not questhelper and when I log in I still get a whole list of stuff in red that isn’t accepted. This includes cartographer.

  3. Do y’all think I can handle DPS in the HH dungeon?

Thanks

Q

You could also queue up for ToC-5 every day, which would get you to 17.

My BE paladin Kalathan got both the Helm and the Squishling on a single HH drop Saturday.

Gnocchi, my Gnome Warrior got the Horseman’s Reins to drop later that day. Woot! But my, he does look silly riding around on it – his feet don’t reach the stirrups.

Also, I didn’t even know the darn thing could fly until I saw someone else with the mount launch themselves into the air from the Dalaran landing platform.

Oh hey, I totally forgot about ToC-5. That works. It’s grindy, but you don’t have to spend too many days grinding.

And a special “screw you” to the dwarf hunter in Goldshire who parked himself and his (large) dinosaur pet next to the water tub and then went AFK or something. The dino was blocking the direct access to the tub, making it much harder to click on the tub to get a fresh bucket.

I thought about reporting him to a GM; but he faded out just before the firefighting ended and I hadn’t caught his name. A couple of other players were yelling at him to move, so either he was a jerk or AFK. Either way, it was damn inconsiderate.

YMMV. I was good at soloing Commanders long before I figured out how to solo Chill. The Commanders are good jousters, but it just takes some practice to get better. And patience to clear well, because in my many early fails fighting Commanders I usually got overwhelmed by adds. (Scouts are bad; if I accidentally attract more than 2, it’s almost certainly “run away” time. With 2, it’s actually worth the effort to retarget and down them and then start over with the Commander.)

Wha?

Extra seals? When did this happen? I pretty much finished grinding seals when I got the last Tournament mount, so I guess I missed something. Back in the day, (lol), it was 13 seals per day max, without extraordinary luck on the bags: 10 from the quests, and 3 from doing heroic Tournament.
