New WoW General Discussion Thread 6/8/10

You can follow a guide I use the guide that can be found here that includes maps of good routes: WoW Herbalism Leveling Guide 1-600 | WoW Classic Guides

Go to Sindragosa’s Fall just south of the tournament grounds, these guys can be pulled singly and this is actually the closest farming spot.

You have to speak to the goblin who is standing in the factory to get a vehicle. Note that there is a limit to the number of vehicles one side can have which depends on how many factories you control so sometimes you’ll try to build a vehicle and it wont work.

I was in a grumpy mood last night so decided to avoid social contact and play my guild-less DK, she had just hit 67. I got her talents sorted out, hit the training dummy for a bit then proceeded to mow down all the quest* mobs in Netherstorm including group quests (68* mobs included) with ease. Blood Knights are very hard to kill, I am loving Bone Shield and my little fat red worms that pop up at just the right time.

Hit 68 in just over an hour but it was getting late so thought I’d get myself over to Howling Fjord ready to take on Northrend. So I got myself to Menethril (sp?) Habour to get a boat. And waited. And waited. Oo a boat no that’s the one to Kalimdor. And waited. And wai- well you get the idea, eventually logged off in frustration, is there a boat issue anyone know?

*Ok one I still can’t do and this is my third toon of trying, that damn Mr Bomb.

I call confirmation bias. :stuck_out_tongue: I’ve “noticed” the same thing with any of my proc abilities (that aren’t off killing blows), and I’m quite sure it’s because I only get annoyed (and therefore remember) when there’s nothing to hit with them.
[/QUOTE]

I didn’t say it only happens at those times, but that it does happen at those times, and that when it does happen at those times it’s like “target! target! I need a new target!” You know, it’s like a line from an Alanis Morissette song: “getting a free bucket of hurt and no target to dump it on”. So, we’re in perfect agreement and be careful lest you bite that tongue.

Quasi, I remember getting chitin off spiders and thinking “now if you could just add an l and fry them…” - I think I’ve been reading too many descriptions of swampbear’s dinner menus.

Quasi, in the vehicle factories in Wintergrasp there is a goblin standing on the platform. Talk to him - he’ll ask you what kind of vehicle you want, then he’ll make it for you and you will be placed right into it.

As far as hitting things with your sword - right-clicking on any enemy should engage your autoattack, if you’re close enough. In WG, attack anything that’s red. Since these are real live players, they’re going to be tougher to kill then the mobs you’re used to, so you probably want to be in a group of friendly players as much as possible. Either way, it’s normal to die a lot. If you save enough Honor Points to buy PvP gear with +resistance on it, you’ll be able to last a little longer.

The lag is just a matter of your computer trying to display all the dozens of players in the area. If it gets so bad that you can’t do anything, you might want to try to find an area in WG with less fighting going on (not 20 people vs. 20).

Finally, because you’re in a raid, you will continue to acquire Honor and Achievements no matter how poorly you do individually. So don’t worry about it, that’s part of the game.

Note–since Wolkie’s Alliance, it’ll be a gnome, not a goblin. Everything else is true, though. If you don’t feel comfortable in a vehicle, though, you don’t have to do it; most of the time, when I do Wintergrasp, I do it on the ground. Especially if we’re defending.

Yesterday I did WG and for the first time in a while, I spend a lot of it manning one of the defensive guns on the fortress wall. That was fun. I destroyed at least 8 or 9 vehicles and rained down destruction on the foot battles going on in between vehicle assaults.

Is it just me, or has the Horde (on Cairne) been keeping control of Wintergrasp a lot more since the patch?

How long did you wait? The boat to Northrend seems to take a lot longer to turn up than the one to Kalimdor. I don’t know if the patch has changed anything, as I’ve only got to northrend since it came out.

Skammie, I did see a gnome, but he/she asked if I wanted to learn how to build a catapult, and I never did find the one with the vehicle question.

When they’re all bunched together it’s hard to see the ones with red writing over their heads.

About the points - I’m sure not gonna turn them down. Just wanted to make sure I’m doing something correctly. As far as that goes, I’m learning something every time I go in, so I’m not as flustered as I was the first time.

martu, thanks for the advice on Singarosa and the herb map. I’ll be sure to check 'em out.

Thanks

Q

Quasi, it’s that gnome. You can build different vehicles depending on how many enemies you’ve killed so far in that fight, the catapult is one of them.

Nothing wrong with that, as long as you’re trying

Geez, I hope not - my nelf hunter is 69 and just about to head there.

I’ve still never done WG. But last night my warrior sort of sneaked in there during a battle just to take a peek at what was happening (just barely crossed the border between Icecrown and WG). And I got a very long-standing question answered. Some time back I mentioned a female gnome rogue named Nunepi who basically lives on the bank steps in Dalaran, and wondered what, exactly, she does. Well, there she was in WG, so I guess she just sits/sleeps on the bank steps between WG battles

The cap is 4,000. If you’re getting close to that, you should spend some while it’ll still do you good. You won’t be able to buy anything 'til you hit 85, and you’ll earn JP much faster then. But any gear you can buy with your JP for 80 will probably be replaced in a few levels, so your choice is basically slightly easier leveling earlier vs. slightly faster gearing later.

Entering any PvP area (Wintergrasp or a Battleground) will flag you automatically. You should leave your flag set to off, otherwise people will be able to kill you even outside of those zones. You can tell when Wolkie is flagged because his portrait will have an Alliance symbol on it–a blue and gold badge with a fancy “L.” When you leave WG or a BG, you will stay flagged for at least 5 minutes. There will be a timer by your portrait showing the countdown, unless you flagged yourself, in which case you will stay flagged for 5 minutes past when you turn it off.

Basic summary: Never turn your PvP flag on manually.

That could be because you were being pointed toward Wintergrasp Fortress while the Horde were in control of it. When that happens, there’s an Alliance base camp to the east that all of the friendly NPC questgivers move to.

Yeah, pretty much you just have to ride around looking for the stuff that will level you, since it grows randomly. Did you make sure your Herb tracking is turned on? Click the magnifying glass icon on your minimap and make sure the box is checked next to “Find Herbs.”

Nope, they’re NPCs.

XT-002. I hope you had your sound turned on–pulling him for the first time and hearing that voice is an experience to be treasured.

That’s actually a very good strategy, especially for someone who’s (a) having bad lag or (b) inexperienced at PvP. Every rider in a vehicle makes it stronger, so Wolkie’s helping just by sitting there and looking handsome.

For you, Quasi, I wouldn’t worry about making vehicles. You can just go ahead and ride in the ones other people make. That way, you don’t have to worry about what kind of vehicle to make, where to take it, etc. If you start feeling more comfortable with how the battle flows after participating a few times, then you can start making vehicles of your own.

Don’t leave the party while you’re in WG. Staying in the raid with other people is how you get credit for kills, how people can buff each other, etc.

Were you in range of anyone to hit? In PvE, a monster will run up to you and stay there while you hit it. In PvP, the other players will often be running away, so you have to keep moving a lot.

That’s the beauty of WG.

Menethil Harbor. As in Arthas’s surname. And you were standing on the wrong dock. The one all the way on the left (as you look from the Flight Master) has the boat to Kalimdor; the one all the way on the right goes to Northrend.

ETA: AFAIK, there is *no *boat or zeppelin where ones to different locations arrive at exactly the same place. Each boat has its own dock; each zep has its own side of a tower. So if you are waiting for one and a transport that pulls up headed for a different location, look elsewhere for your transport. Usually, there are cues: signs pointing the way, objects that suggest the zone (e.g. banners or plants), and NPCs who’ll direct you.

Oh, speaking of WG, I hit a milestone achievement: 5000 HKs. For someone who doesn’t do much PvP, I felt pretty good about that.

Ah yes, the ship to Northrend leaves from the pier at the north end of the harbour. It’s an ice-breaker with a paddle-wheel at the back rather than a sailing ship. if you talk to the NPCs at the end of a pier there is usually one who tells you where the boats from that one go.

I still think the ship to Northrend is infrequent compared to the one that goes to Kalimdor, has anyone else noticed that?

Congrats!

I’ve never gotten that impression, but I hardly ever take the boats.

Which will probably change for a lot of people once they take out the portals in Dal. sigh

The Northrend boats do stop in port on both sides for much longer than Kalimdor<->EK boats. The Menethil Harbor one also goes through the fjord in Howling Fjord, which is a long, scenic cruise. So yeah, it’s definitely a lengthy trip.

But, once you’re level 80, you probably won’t have much reason to be going to Northrend anymore anyway.

Concur. Right now, Dalaran is the endgame city, so there’s a lot of reason for max levels to travel between it and the rest of the game.

But when the cap is raised to 85 and people start leveling in Vashj’ir and Hyjal, Northrend will just become another leveling area like Outland. You’ll set your hearth in Dalaran and have no real reason to leave until you hit 78 and can move on to Cataclysm content.

I thought it was a good introduction the first time I travelled to Northrend, I think that’s why the designers did it like that. I really like the scenery of the Howling Fjord zone, but now it’s “summon gryphon” as soon as the zone loads.
