New WoW General Discussion Thread 6/8/10

Good is finally reaching level 68 so I can go to Northrend.

Better is sending 1000 gold to my level 80 to purchase the heirloom Cold Weather Flying book for the level 68 and finding out that CWF is now a base level 68 skill.

Best is discovering it only costs 500 gold now. Woot woot.

Well I would certainly endorse night elf/blood elf catfights… :stuck_out_tongue:
I also wholly endorse the low-level class ability improvements in patch 4.0.1. I rolled up a warrior on a PvP server, and he’s rocking. Fargodeep Mine was a walk in the park. Last time I rolled a human warrior and attempted Fargodeep Mine at-level, I got my ass handed to me. Repeatedly.

Also, soloed Hogger at level 10. And then, as I was leaving the area I encountered a cute human female priest and decided to assist her with her gnoll armband and Hogger quests. Playing a prot warrior while grouped with a priest is fun!

Also, Victory Rush before level 10? FTW!

Really? My cows get flirts most often, the troll sometimes, the orcs have never so much as gotten a “hey, greenie, how you doin’?”, and it’s not a peculiarity of the Spanish servers, as I have both a Spanish and an English cow.

The hits are similar to what I get on my female dwarves, nowhere near as obnoxious as the stuff I’ve gotten the couple times I tried to play female elves. Apparently, some people think that female elves were put in this world (or any other) for the exclusive purpose of dancing naked. Usually the flirter is someone who’s started by saying “oh my, [female dwarves|cows who are not druids] are for real!”

Wonder if it’s a regional difference or a server thing. Or maybe the guys hitting on my English cow are from Spain…

Having written for a couple of MUDs (what MMORPGs were before they could have graphics), I love the lore aspect for how it makes the world come together and I like having little stories for where do my characters fit in that world. For me, lore is the difference between “a bunch of places with a bunch of mobs I get to hit with a bunch of differently-looking pointy sticks” and “a world”. Seeing the same dude crop up in several spots is a bit weird, but having the “older and wiser version” of him remember that you previously helped his “younger self” (if you did) is neat.

I dunno, I have always thought the average female moo/dwarf is more attractive than the average beanpole elf.

Now granted, female draenai win.

That’s been your trip to my psyche. Please check your immediate seating area for your personal belongings when exiting the car.

Word. Spacegoat got back. I’ve never been fond of the elves. Blood are too androgynous and night are too damn weird.

As a chick, I personally drool over male belfs. A male belf walks by? I could be fighting the Lich King and I’d just stop to stare. I keep on saying I’ll align with the Aldor someday, but…so much pretty over at Scryers Tier.

I have a feeling I might just become pretty useless if fighting Kael.

It was my pocket healer’s birthday yesterday, so we finished off the last two achievements we both needed for Glory of the Hero: Zombiefest and Share the Love. The strat for Zombiefest changed a bit since the patch–you can’t kite the second boss into the inn anymore (he’ll port you straight back out), and you cant bring any zombies into it (they’ll stop at the door). So after some frustration, I figured out there was an open place next door, dragge him in there, and waited for everything outside to respawn. When it had, we burned him down, and went through the next boss as normal. Once the secret passage was open, I took one of the DPS with me back out the front while the Boomkin went Bear and took the healer and the other DPS through the passage. I then gathered up every… single… zombie in the front of the instance. I had to turn nameplates off.

It was incredible. They move pretty slowly, so when I came back to the inn, there were a few seconds where we were just standing there… and then they came streaming around the corner. I told the other group to go, and the Mage and I hit our AOE… and we all froze up as the game coped with 87 (87!) zombies all dying instantly. It got so bad for the other team that they all died–but not before getting the last 13 zombies we needed. Honestly, we’re really lucky that we were geared enough to (presumably) one-shot anything, because I doubt we’d have made it through that lag otherwise.

Share the love was comparatively easy: just a matter of *not *hitting the boss until we’d gotten everybody impaled. And then: hoorah! More nerd points, and a pair of shiny red protodrakes.

You forgot YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH.

There are two meanings to “raid.”

1.) The one we’re using here means any group with more than 5 players. (Technically, you could also have a raid with fewer than five players, but to get more than that in the same group, it must be a raid.) Any time you’re in Wintergrasp or a Battleground, you’re automatically placed into a raid group so that you can all benefit from each other’s abilities.

2.) Because the hardest PvE content (where you’re fighting against game monsters) can only be conquered at level by a raid, these encounters are also called “raids” or “raid instances.”

I guess you could say there’s a third meaning, too. “Raid” can also be used as a verb. Usually when people are talking about raiding, they mean Meaning 2: grouping up to attack big boss monsters. Sometimes they’ll also talk about something like “raiding Orgrimmar”–when there’s an opposite-faction city involved, that means getting together a big group of people (preferably 40, the maximum size for a raid) and attacking the faction leader(s) in that city.

PvE raiding would probably be a bit too confusing for you–there’s a lot to keep track of in terms of crazy boss mechanics, and all the while you have to be cranking out a lot of DPS. Even tanking in an instance would be pretty complicated.

If you wanted to start trying out some group content, I’d suggest queueing for a random *regular *LK dungeon as DPS. You’re probably not going to find a lot of patient people, though. This is actually a point where it’s too bad that you’re not on a realm with other Dopers, because then we could group with you for five-mans.

Great post, Oak, but this is the one point I disagree with. Smaller groups means everyone has a greater role to play and peole are more likely to get bitchy if one person isn’t doing exactly what they think they should do. I think Alterac Valley would actually be better, just because it’s a 40-man.

Yeah, you could stand to get some upgrades. But feel free to tell those jerks to get stuffed or hand you some BOE epics if they don’t like it. Now that you’re fighting in WG, you’ll be getting Honor Points, which you can use to buy PvP gear. Is there anybody here who PvPs on a Warrior who could suggest what pieces he should buy, in what order? If not, I’ll see what I can kludge together, though I just PvP in my PvE tanking gear.

Hi FGIE! I can’t reach that article from work, so I’ll give you my answers outside of that context.

1.) Things are a bit buggy right now because they just dropped a *major *patch that made serious changes to a lot of important things. Personally, I feel this patch was rushed in order to have it live before Blizzcon, Blizzard’s yearly convention (which is fucking huge). Generally speaking, though, the game is pretty stable.

2.) WoW is an MMORPG: Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game. The MMO part means that you’re playing on a server, or “realm,” with thousands of other players at any given time. (There are many, many realms, each its own version of the game world, spread across the various regions–e.g., U.S. vs. Europe vs. Korea. Anybody with a particular version of the game can make a character on any realms in that region. Characters can only interact with other characters on their same realm, but they can be transferred between realms for a fee. There *is *a new feature that allows you to add someone as a friend by account and chat with them no matter where they’re playing, but there are some lingering privacy concerns.) Globally, there are about 12 millon subscribers. The RPG part means that (a) you chose a class and race for your character which will dramatically affect your playstyle, (b) your character goes through a leveling process, getting stronger as it reaches higher levels, and (c) you customize your character as you go. In WoW, this customization is mainly achieved through Talent trees. Each class has three possible trees to focus in, which will determine both your role in a group and how you fill that role. Further customization is created through your choice of Professions.

3.) Yes, I think you’d like it. As someone else observed, PvP could be very fun for someone who plays a lot of FPS games. While most people tend to gravitate toward a couple of main options when they hit the level cap, there is really no “wrong” way to play the game (assuming that you’re not failing to fill a role in a group you chose to join). I honestly have a hard time imagining that there’s anybody out there who isn’t crazy who wouldn’t enjoy WoW if they gave it a shot.

4.) There isn’t a new game coming out, exactly. It’s an expansion. In order to install and play it, you also have to have every previous version of the game. However, most of those new features won’t be relevant for you until you get to the higher levels. “Vanilla” WoW, the original game, takes you through level 60. The Burning Crusade (TBC or BC) extends the level cap to 70, opens up Outland, adds two new races, and adds one profession. Wrath of the Lich King (WotLK or Wrath) has a cap of 80, adds a new class, and opens up Northrend. And Cataclysm (Cata), coming in December, will bring the level cap to 85, open new high-level zones in the old world, add two new races, add new race/class combinations, and allow flying in the old world (presumably still only for level 60+ characters). (There are other features I’m leaving out that were added with various expansions but are available to everyone, regardless of whether or not they have the expansions installed.) As long as you don’t want access to something that’s in an expansion, you don’t actually need it to play the game. There’s currently a Battlechest that contains both Vanilla and TBC for pretty cheap; if you wait until Cata, it’s possible that the package will be updated to include Wrath. But that’s the only real reason to wait. (And note that you must install everything in order: if you want Cata, you need Vanilla > TBC > Wrath first. You can actually install the whole game off the Wrath DVDs/CDs, but you still need the activation keys off the other versions.)

Hey, hey, hey, they electric slide.

Cute. I like her song for Plants vs. Zombies better, though. She’s going to be doing the voice for the WoW in-game sunflower pet that you can get from the Peacebloom vs. Ghouls game.

Most of the lingering privacy concerns have now been addressed: it’s now possible to turn off the ability for your friends’ friends to see your real name, and you can also turn off the Facebook sharing options. So if you’re comfortable revealing your real name to a friend and you’ve got your settings set right, that’s all you’ll have to do.

That’s a good point. Especially considering Quasi seems to be getting the hang of WG already, AV is probably a better option than WSG for him.

Agreed. I’m a horrible PvPer, and I never enjoy the smaller BGs unless I’m with a guild premade so we can actually have a strategy. In AV, I can just run around and kill things, work my way to the bunkers and help kill the NPCs, then go to the end bunker and kill the general. I might not be doing it completely right, but I have fun, nobody yells at me, and I get lots of honor.

Nava, the people you mention would be pretty surprised at our guild then. We have a female tauren enh shaman who’s our biggest pvp’er, and then we have another female tauren who’s a prot war. I know trolls got hips that don’t lie, but mmm-mm-mm, do female tauren ever have back.

Rik, you give me hope. I may reroll a tauren war in Cata after I’ve gotten my pally and DK to 80 – I even have the perfect name picked out for a couple tons of angry moo in plate. Speaking of which, random thought. Do we have a ballpark on how much a male tauren in plate would weigh in at? Do they have to worry about breaking those spindly belfs’ furniture?

Due to a RL emergency, I ended up running our ICC10 last night. (This close to Cat, a filled 25 is probably someone else’s hallucination. :p)

But on the other hand, we ended up with an all-guild/friend-of-the-guild run and rolled through 9/12 bosses in 3 hours, which was the best we’ve done so far. When people logged, they were still chatting about how well it went. A part of it was that I ended up switching from my hunter to my priest to help out the other hpriest/druid on Blood Quarter, where we found out that our respective healing styles went together like peanut butter and jelly and CHOCOLATE, and it was awesome.

We’re continuing tonight (hopefully with GL back in place) with Frostbrood Halls. At least this time I know how to heal Dreamwalker better, although I’ve never tried Sindragosa. (I’m hoping I don’t have to heal since I’d like for my hunter to have another go at LK but who knows)

Hey, I’m a gal who loves playing female taurens (80 druid and hunter), except for the low doorway issue. I’m just saying, all the female taurens that I personally know are played by actual women. Guys who want to stare at a female Horde toon seem to pick undead, BElfs, or to a lesser extent, trolls or orcs.

This hadn’t crossed my mind before, but now I’m totally going to make my goblin shammy a female. I’ve had female toons before (an orc rogue and a belf lock) but I eventually abandoned them.

I’d say most of the *serious *privacy concerns have now been addressed. The *lingering *concern is that there is *still *no invisible mode, way to designate individual characters as always hidden, etc. So if you friend someone, they will *always *know when you are online, what game you are playing (WoW or SCII), what character & server you’re on, etc.

True. I don’t worry much about that since I only currently have two RealID friends–I’m married to one of them and the other one is about as much of a privacy nut as I am so we know when to leave each other alone.

Yeah, I already have one planned. My husband has been playing in the beta, and says that the goblin models have been made more attractive than on live. I’m naming my shammy Hawaya (“how are ya”), and my husband has planned a goblin mage named Kpow, and another goblin named Hawyadooin (“how ya doin?”).

Anyone got any recommendations on whether I should download the adds “lightheaded” or “tom tom”?

Thanks

Q

Sorry, Quasi, I’m not familiar with either of those, which is why I didn’t comment.

They show:

  1. Comments from WoWhead about the quest and

  2. Coordinates as to where the quest is located.

And I should apologize, SFG for not having been more definitive.

The coordinates one should help because I get confused as to which number is east-west and which north-south, but I don’t want to mess up my view on the screen.

Thanks Hon!
