Quasi, I don’t know about Tom-Tom, but for map co-ordinates I use Map Coords. It does three things:
– Puts your current coordinates under your portrait
– Puts the coordinates of all your party members next to their portraits
– On the Map screen, displays the coordinates of your mouse cursor
Map Coords only shows you where you are, though – it doesn’t show you where to go to complete a particular quest, although the default map does that.
Yeah, I don’t know anything about those addons, either. Given my latency issues, I try to limit addons to the bare minimum. I use Recount to keep an eye on my dps, Deadly Boss Mods to help with dungeon/raid tactics, Gear Score mostly for vanity reasons–but also some utility in screening potential raid members, Quartz + mage part, and I just added a small one that tracks Fire DoTs so I know when to use Combustion. Also have Omen Threat Meter but I may delete it. The built in warning is adequate for my purposes. Might keep it in case I decide to dual spec my druid as a Bear…
I mean, I get the general idea of what they do–I just haven’t used them myself, so I can’t say how well they’d work for you. My recommendation to you is to (a) read the descriptions and (b) look at the screenshots, and if they look interesting, try them out. (Probably one at a time.) If they don’t work well for you, you can always uninstall them. They can’t hurt anything permanently.
Just a couple of thoughts for you–you can get the same functionality as GS from the website wtfismygearscore.com, and probably help your latency issues. Also, is the DoT one CombustionHelper? If it isn’t, you should give it a try. It’s very nice, and very helpful.
Has anyone found a good replacement for QuestHelper? What I really miss are the arrows on my mini-map that point me in the direction of a quest (or questgiver) and the ones that point me to the nearest city (or cities).
I don’t know if we’ve discussed Carbonite before, but I switched from QH to that back when QH was causing hard freezes in some systems and have never looked back. It even points at where Finklereid’s reagents are!
That’s not a QH feature. That’s part of the UI. It was make optional on the minimap with 4.0.1, but for some reason they made it disabled by default. You can turn it back on by looking at your tracking types, and then selecting the one that’s something like “points of interest.” I forget if that’s the exact wording, but I believe it’s the last item on the list, if that helps.
Sadly, it’s just for WG and they only stay in a group because we massive out number the horde and it’s a blob of people heading from one workshop to the next. BGs we seem to get torn to shreds. I hate guarding the stables and seeing that elite group of horde slaughter the Alliance group and cap the blacksmith and then watch them start making their way toward the stables… It’s a bad feeling.
Speaking of addons, what’s a good unit frame addon? Prior to patch I just drag/dropped the groups onto my screen..and kept 2 single squares in the center of my screen for the tanks.
I can’t grasp this new UI that seems really clunky and I can’t seem to break off individual squares or groups and arrange it to my liking.
I recommend Shadowed Unit Frames! I would draw little hearts and flowers around it if I could. It’ll do party/raid/solo frames and is very customizable with a good GUI to help you do so. You can do the breaking off of individual squares and groups with sUF.
I love me some Grid. The only downside is that it’s so incredibly customizable and has so many optional extras that it can seem a bit intimidating. But it will work right out of the box, and there are videos on YouTube that give a very good walk-through of how to set it up to be even more awesome.
Ah thankees, good to know. I use the default UI, so it was nice to see my Cursed-to-the-max sweetie hover over my shoulder one day and say “Cool arrow pointing you to your grave!! How do you get that?” I had no idea, but a week later <post-patch> it was gone and I was sad to no longer be uber in that one respect.
I like Light-headed, but it’s purely convenience. It just transfers all the Wowhead comments from the website to an ingame window. Handy, not necessary at all.
Also, if it’s easier for you, there’s a new area in Stormwind, a whole big dock area that also has a boat to Northrend, to the western end. Either boat will take you to an area well suited to your level, and you just quest your way from there.
You will not finish exploring the continent before you hit 80; I have two 80s now and there is still stuff I haven’t explored, even though I tried to do stuff on the second one that I hadn’t on the first. There’s lots on Northrend, and it’s a lot of fun.
That’s the default Blizzard raid frame. I think there is a little tab on it that will make it go away. You can also make it smaller in your Interface settings, and move it around your screen. I’m not at my computer so I can’t tell you exactly how, but I’m sure someone will be along soon to explain.
There’s a little arrow on the left. Click it, and yet another little box will slide out, pushing the green calendar thing even further into your way. At the bottom right of that little box is a button that says “hide”. Click it, and the green calendar thing will go away. Then click the arrow thing again, and the little box will go away.
