New WoW General Discussion Thread 6/8/10

Great night for my warlock who picked up her second T9 piece and also the Wrathful helm so finally after 80 levels and I don’t know how many hours she has a helm worthy of a warlock, it’s nasty looking.

Very excited about the beginning of the cataclysm events and we also got a little glimpse at life after the portals are removed from Dalaran, many more 80s running about SW.

I’m not sure how to do that with Auctioneer but the addon Auction Profit Master has an option Maximum Price Gap that will let you ignore the odd low priced item. Of course the other option is to buy them all up and repost them.

Thanks for the tips. I installed Auctionator and Skada in the end, as they looked quite simple, and I don’t need anything too fancy. Used Skada in an instance, and was pleased to see I out-damaged everyone except the lvl 80 tank (my Paladin is lvl 76).

I’d take wading through treacle over hundred of fishing attempts. Sounds like the Sea Horsey will be the way to go.

Ah, thanks, I was a bit confused, as some of the wiki pages I was looking at haven’t been updated since the patch came out.

The cultists quests yesterday conveniently pushed my reputation with Stormwind to exalted, so it would cost me 4000g with the trainer at Honour Hold in Hellfire Penisular. Fortunately, he takes Stormwind rep for discounts. I can afford it, I’ve made about 5000g going from lvl 70-76, without doing any farming. With crusader aura, I’d be looking at 372% speed instead of 336%. It is a bit of a luxury, it would probably be more useful while levelling up than at the lvl cap. I’m not really sure what to expect when I reach lvl 80, what sorts of expenses am I likely to be looking at please? Gems and item enchantments?

Expenses at 80 include gems, enchants and repairs. If you’re raiding, you may also be purchasing flasks and/or food. That doesn’t include things you may want to buy but are unnecessary, like mounts, pets, outfits, etc. Don’t forget you won’t be 80 for long before you start leveling again.

BDL didn’t raid last night, so I was able to do all the pre-Cata quests (kinda fun, and pretty good money). I also redid my shadow off-spec to have a PvP focus, and did a couple of BGs. I love having all the escapes and interrupts while being all face-melty!

If you’re not raiding you don’t spend MUCH on gems/enchants/etc. If you are raiding, expect to pay 300-700g per upgraded piece of gear to re-gem and re-enchant it, either directly to AH or indirectly in maintaining your Guild Bank.

From the tactical perspective, mind you, I often feel like (with some justification since I do it too :D) that guy with 10 stacks of Tenacity sees my Furious shoulders and T10 helm and thinks "He might be resto, let’s kill him to make sure.

On the upside, if you diligently do dailies, you’ll earn something like 300-350 gold a day. Granted, 25 dailies is a good bit of work, at least an hour’s worth a day. When I’m in the mood to do dailies, I focus on the Argent Tournament; there’s I think 9 dailies available once you work your way through to Champion status, which gets you about 150 gold a day.

You can also make a ton of money finishing quest lines in Northrend that you skipped on the way to 80, but you can only do those once of course.

Closer to 400, I think, if you do the Tourney dailies - 13 gold times 25 is 325, plus 40 for the bonus bags, plus whatever you loot on the way. OTOH, doing just the 9 tourney dailies takes me more than half an hour (I know because my hearth resets by the time I’m done); a full 25 would probably be closer to 2 hours.

Yep have to agree on the time taken, I always do the tourney dailies plus the jewelcrafting daily on my pally and that’s usually just over 30 minutes work.

Yes if you’re not raiding the good news is that the second best enchant and gem for your gear will be very cheap indeed and there should be plenty on the AH. If you’re not trying to kill the Lich King on Heroic the +8 stats chest enchant (rather than the +10) is more than adequate for example.

So far, the pre-Cata events are non-intrusive, so kudos to the dev team for that.

The lower level game is…weird as hell. I dusted off my pally last night. Spec’d him Protection. Queued for a dungeon, got in Scarlet Monastery Armory. Total chaos ensued, group ran wild, everybody pulling at will, nobody caring that I intended to tank. Frakking mage and a lock just going nuts. I got frustrated…told the mage to tank the final boss. And the frakking mage did. That should not be possible. But I saw it with my own eyes.

Then I did a bit of questing. Looks to me like protection pallies pre-level 40 are now pretty much unstoppable killing machines. I was pulling 4 or more mobs up to two levels higher, and self-healing with Word of Glory while they beat themselves to death on my Retribution Aura.

Sounds like you had a couple of extremely confident and impatient veterans in your group, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing (although it’s crap for teaching you how to tank). Lowbies are definitely really overpowered right now for the content, especially if they’re using heirlooms and dungeon gear.

Jaina stops by to say hi to Thrall before you head from his chambers to the outside of UC, as a Horde player. OK, it’s more like “WTF just happened?! You’d better deal with this fast, because the other Alliance leaders are seriously pissed.” Meanwhile Sylvanas is bowed down and on one knee in front of Thrall, probably because she knows how badly she screwed up and that he could kick her ass if he wanted.

He was a good leader - pity that f’n Garrosh is taking over. What a waste of a redemption in that one (so far).

They leaked some story info during Blizzcon, the most significant of which is not that Thrall’s story is being set aside in favor of Garrosh’s story, but that Garrosh’s story is only a small part of Thrall’s story. Garrosh is a punk and Blizzard knows it.

Yeah…we blew through the dungeon with no problems, but it was incredibly annoying. I wanted a traditional tanking run to try out the new skills, but that just wasn’t happening. On the upside, queueing as a tank will likely lead to quick RDF pops, so maybe I’ll get more opportunities next time I play the tankadin.

Yeah, I know there’s more. Still, both Saurfang the Younger and Garrosh are redeemed out in Nagrand. Saurfang is sent to a terrible fate; Garrosh turns into a major jerk. Sucks.

And regarding Cairne -

O.M.G! Cairne?! He’s everyone’s favorite grandpa! WTF.

I strongly suggest anyone who’s interested in lore read the new book The Shattering, by Christie Golden. Aside from being a great read, it explains a lot about what’s going on in the pre-Cataclysm period. I came away with a new respect for both Garrosh (I still think he’s a punk right now, but he’s got the makings of a good leader once he grows up a bit) and Varian Wrynn (whom I previously thought was a hotheaded idiot every bit as dangerous as Garrosh).

Also,

Might as well get used to Garrosh as Warchief, because both the book and the devs at Blizzcon (I was at the panel) make it pretty clear that Thrall’s got bigger fish to fry for a good long time, and he won’t be coming back to lead the Horde any time soon (if ever).

Phasing technology saves the day. Somewhat. The elementals are visible to all, but they aggro their summoners first, and they’re pushovers, so they aren’t running wild and killing bystanding lowbies. As far as I can tell.

Watching my kid play his prot pally, I can vouch that they’re unstoppable killing machines up to at least level 60 (at which point he got tired of the lack of challenge and walked away from the toon.) I wonder if Blizz realizes how unbalanced and..frankly…boring that kind of power is.

Well, yes. Burning Crusade and Lich King warped the 1-60 game by introducing new stats, heirlooms, new races, Death Knights (at least for 55-60), the RDF, the 4.0.1 class changes, etc. etc. The original game wasn’t balanced around all the new additions.

With Cataclysm, ostensibly, the 1-60 game is being re-engineered to take all the new stuff into account. I have a feeling it’ll still be pretty easy – the game simply doesn’t get tough until max level – but it should hopefully feel a little more balanced.

Oh yeah, do you end up with two Sylvanas, one standing (part of the pre-Cata conference) and one kneeling (the pre-Battle for Undercity version of her)?

Yeah, just look at him standing there in Grommash Hold, strutting his high polygon count, making all the other Horde leaders look bad and old-fashioned in comparison. Jerk.
Speaking of jerks …

My mage queued up for a random, and after a 16-minute queue got into Utgarde Pinnacle. Oh good, a quick and easy run, right? Nope. The group “leader” was the healer, and the tank and one of the other DPS were his guildmates. The healer announced, “Okay, we’re doing [The Incredible Hulk].” And proceeded to give instructions. Okay, fine, no problem. I’ve read up on how to do that one, and I know what to do. In we went for the attempt. I made sure I applied no DOTs, as instructed. However, the attempt for the achievement failed, as the tank managed to kill the first hulk all by himself. He quickly pulled the second hulk, but that one failed because the tank was facing the wrong direction on the platform and the hulk knocked him off and down to the floor as the sword was descending, and of course the hulk followed him down and so didn’t get hit by the sword. At that point, the healer yelled, “Wipe!” (to reset the encounter, I assume). Um, no. I’m afraid I’m not going to incur an unnecessary repair bill just so you can get an achievement. So once Svala was dead, the third DPS and I got vote-kicked by the three who were guildmates. And then I had an 18-minute queue to get into my next heroic.

So thank you, Sjg of Winterhoof, for wasting over half an hour of my time (34 minutes just sitting in queues to get my one completed random heroic) on your stupid achievement attempt. How about the next time you want to do achievement runs, you put together your own group of five, instead of wasting other people’s time in the random dungeon finder? I take some satisfaction in seeing that he didn’t end up getting the achievement.
