New WoW General Discussion Thread 6/8/10

He needs it for First Aid leveling - at this point I’d farm and if there’s anything left over after learning, sell it.

IIRC, Quasi only has gathering professions, so that’s the most efficient way for him to make money. I’m pretty sure he doesn’t do many dungeons (correct me if I’m wrong).

Yup, that’s easiest (if a little tedious) for me. I’m farming the hell out of leather and spider silk for money makers, and if I get some decent drops along the way, they either go to the vendor or auction. So far, since I’ve 80’d. My auctions have brought in over 1 K gold.

Admittedly, my gear isn’t as optimal as it could be, which is why I visit the AH a lot and try to get HP in the easier battle grounds.

I’m a lot less “nimble-fingered” (and nimble-minded!) than the rest of you lads and lassies, so it takes me a while longer questing and figuring stuff out. But the challenge to my memory (what buttons to push when, etc.) makes this a lot of fun.

The memory thing is also why I don’t do dungeons and try to stay solo as much as possible.

Still having the prob with HP, though. Made it up to 785 and 10 min later they calculated it down to 729. I wrote them another e-mail.

Thanks

I take it you didn’t play in vanilla, back then Aimed Shot was a part of the standard rotation and the really slow weapons were awesome because you wanted to fit your Aimed Shot casts between the auto shots. When the Burning Crusade came along they slightly changed the Aimed Shot mechanics(made it reset the auto shot timer) and gave us Steady Shot instead.

The current MM rotations is something like: Apply Serpent Sting, keep Improved Steady Shot up, cast Chimera Shot when it’s off cool down(this should keep Serpent Sting up), use Arcane Shot to keep your focus from overflowing and use Aimed Shot/Kill Shot when they’re available.
Not sure how that is any more boring than any other rotation(you should try playing a frost mage, that’s a boring rotation), one cd(well, four if you count Rapid Fire, Readiness and Kill Shot), one selfbuff, one proc and a resource system that actually needs managing to keep track of.
Of course, when you’re solo grinding all you need is Arcane Shot and the occasional Steady Shot. shrug

Hi Y’all! I am a rank newbie (level 11 on my first character) I took Herbalism as one of my professions because I thought it would be easy to gather stuff as I go. My problem is I haven’t found anything! I never see anything that can be harvested. I am just about done in Elwynn (sp) Forest so I have been all over the place. Where do I find harvestabel stuff?

Where should I go next? East has level 15 spiders that attack you on the road, west (more or less) has mechs that gang up on you that are the same level as I am. Stormwind has some quests that involve going to the dwarven lans from what I can tell. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You can turn on display of herbs in the mini-map, which will make them much easier to track down. They are all over Elwyn forest, the herbs should sparkle to bring them to your attention. You can either sell your herbs in the auction house, or train alchemy as a second profession and use them to make potions.

Looking at http://mapwow.com/, you probably want to go west to Westfall next, which has quests for 10-20 characters. Or you could take the deeprun tram to Ironforge (from the Dwarven District in Stormwind), and do some quests in Dun Moragh first.

Wow! that site is awesome!

one more annoying question, How do I turn on the display on the minimap?

There should be a button on the minimap with a magnifying glass on it. Left-click that button and it gives you a drop-down of what you can track.

Oh, and questions about WoW are never annoying. Most of us LIKE showing off our l33t knowledge of the game.

Don’t worry about asking questions. The list of things I “wish I’d known before hitting lvl 40” is a long one, and there are still some things that confuse me.

Hey adhemar and welcome!

I’m kinda like the Wal-Mart greeter here and if these folks can get ME to 80 then they can get ANYONE to 80. Check in here often and there’s usually someone here all the time to help you out.

Now the first thing you’re going to find a little tough to deal with are all the abbreviations, so here’s a few guys to help you with that:

So have a great time with us!

Quasi

That was amusing! However they didn’t explain what they were saying! I knew quite a few of them although I never tried to pronounce them.

Yup. Got the package with a bunch of potions in it. Also had a very generous guildie surprise me with some crafted boots/pants, an enchant for the pants, and a neck piece.

Bought Wrathful Gladiator chest with honor, T10 shoulders with justice points, and won Relentless Gladiator gloves in VoA, so after being 80 about 12 hours, Oakbrow is rocking about a 3500 gear score

T10 Boomkin shoulders look wicked awesome, btw

I got my very first level 80 yesterday! Woot! So I went into my first dungeon since level 40-something. I was DPS with four players in the level 70s, but had the lowest overall damage besides the healer. Even the tank did better than me. I was till in the high 1100s for DPS, which isn’t all that great, but it’s not too far off from being allowed to do heroics. Maybe the other people were much better geared than me with heirlooms and such?

So, I guess I have to work on my rotations. I’m an Arms warrior, and checked out the Elitist Jerks for the updated info. The rotation that I was using isn’t really *that *far off, though. At this point, should I consider switching over to Fury spec for dungeons? I am still questing for achievements, but it shouldn’t be a big deal to switch to Fury. Another problem that I have is that I get discombobulated in the middle of a battle and sometimes my enemy dies but I don’t attack another one. Is there a setting to automatically have my toon start attacking the nearest mob?

For some reason, I thought that the new patch wasn’t going to have armorsmith and weaponsmith as specialties. In Dalaran, though, I spoke to a guy who could switch me from one to the other. I’m at 430 or so for blacksmithing and no good two-handed weapons have come up at all. I would like to stick with armorsmith so I can have a sweet suit for a while. I made a whole savage saronite set, which got broken in the first dungeon because better stuff dropped. Oh, well. It was a waste of materials, but I still got the level ups from it. My understanding, though, is that the level 450 blacksmithing armor is very good. If nothing will be forthcoming from blacksmithing, I’ll hit the AH for a better weapon.

It’s more likely your rotations; level 80 quest gear should be better than most 71-79 gear, with the exception of dungeon gear possibly at around level 75-76 or so.

How you use your abilities and proc can make a big difference. I admit I’m not a Warrior expert, but for example on my Frost Mage: when Fingers of Frost procs, I can opt either to use my Deep Freeze to stun the target or Ice Lance to hit for 2x the damage. At first Ice Lance sounds like the better choice since it actually does damage, but Ice Lance does 2x the damage to any frozen target, not just on a Fingers of Frost proc (FoF treats the target as if it were frozen and is consumed when I choose which spell to cast). So instead I can cast Deep Freeze, stun the target for 5 seconds, and spam Ice Lance 4-5 times for 2x damage each. (2x Ice Lance is only worth about 1x Frostbolt, but it’s cheaper and it’s instant-cast.)

As a point of reference, my mage is 74, geared out half in blue dungeon gear and half in green quest gear, and is doing anywhere from 1400-1800 DPS, and I’m still only coming up third in the DPS chart. The melee classes are pretty consistently outdoing me.

Grats and /cheers for Mithril!!!

Here’s a list of WoW abbreviations for adhemar: http://wow.joystiq.com/2007/02/20/the-compleat-wow-abbreviations/

I printed it out and have it nearby, 'cause some of my friends here can write whole paragraphs using nothing BUT abbrevs!

Re: Herbalism

SFG (Shot from Guns) helped me find a small add-on called “gatherer”. I put it in my action bar, so whenever I do my herbalism profession I just click on it and go riding. Good thing is, it lets you know what skill level is required to farm a particular plant by just mousing over it.

So, question for alla youse:

In New Hearthglen in Dragonblight, when you’re in the zone such that the sky goes a dull red, do you see curved streaks of light that stretch from horizon to the top of your screen that travel left or right? I’ve been seeing those forever and they bug the hell out of me; they look like they might be intended to be lightning, but they don’t act like it, and I’m wondering if it’s a graphical glitch that only I’m seeing.

Getting a screenshot is tricky, but I managed one.

Grats to Mithril! And welcome, adhemar.

adhemar, a couple sites you’ll probably want to keep on hand: wow.joystiq.com (which is a WoW oriented site that does tons of articles and columns and news. Veeeerrry useful.) And wowhead.com, which is a database that will often provide very useful info on quests, items, mobs, what have you.

Mageweave Cloth: These have been a bugger for me to find. I am currently in Winterspring looking for the Timbermaw Tunnel where I’m supposed to find Furbolgs who will drop my cloths, but after 25 minutes of searching, I haven’t found anything.

Also, I did find some mageweave in Tanaris off some trolls in one of those ruins, but I could only harvest from 3 of them, so my question is: In Tanaris, is mageweave cloth available from any ruins which have trolls?

There kust don’t seem to be a lot of locations that aren’t very hard to get to, but Tanaris seems the best choice. I just don’t wanna ride all over creation.

Thanks

Q

Humanoids of a certain level range will drop mageweave. It’s not zone-dependent, except for the general level of humanoid mobs in a zone. If you find humanoids between mid-40s to low-50s in level, they’re capable of dropping mageweave cloth. Now, they’re not going to drop mageweave every time. Cloth has a chance of dropping from humanoids of about lvls 45-52. It’s not going to be on every humanoid you kill. You may want to try inside Zul’Farrak in Tanaris. The trolls in there are pretty concentrated. Just be careful, because they’re all elite, but they’re elite for mid-40s toons, so you shouldn’t have too much trouble as long as you don’t charge into a whole group of them. At 80, you’ll have a pretty wide leeway as far as proximity aggro goes.
