New WoW General Discussion Thread 6/8/10

Yours was that big? I just had a 10MB download waiting for me when I logged in yesterday, and I don’t see anything today. I do notice my drake mounts are flapping their wings once more.

So after my surgery, I just ran my paladin through her dailies (I’ve finally recouped the 5000g she blew on Master Riding, and then some; she’s back over 10,000g now). Then I logged in my night elf priest, Syanalle, who I hadn’t played in a while despite her being decked out in heirlooms. I got her started on the pre-launch quests, though she had to take a break in the middle because SW was in the middle of an invasion. While she waited she explored Elwynn Forest, then noticed she had an old quest to turn in up in Lakeshire, so she did that and then finished the quest chain. In the process she dinged 29 and also managed to pick up Tripping the Rifts. Was eventually able to return to SW and tried to finish out the first string of pre-launch quests, but unfortunately the Horde decided to raid SW right after the elemental attack and so Varian was dead and I couldn’t hand in that last quest to “inform” him. Had he been alive I could have continued on to the third string of quests and might have dinged 30.

I’ve got an unused level 19 gnome rogue on my primary server, and I’m loading him up with heirlooms with the plan to server-transfer him to deliver the stuff to alts on other servers. He currently has the mail/plate chest and shoulders, the 1h mace, and one of the trinkets, destined for my prot warrior on Ysondre, a PvP server. I’m debating holding off until I can load him up with heirlooms suitable for other classes/specs so that I can equip multiple alts on multiple servers without needing to keep bouncing him back to Lightbringer. Also, sending him away on a courier errand like this will open up a slot on Lightbringer for a worgen, when I roll one.

And speaking of my PvP prot warrior… geez those guys are tough! I ran him into Duskwood at level 21, where he promptly drew aggro from one of those level 30 zombies that lurks around Stalvan’s place. And he killed that zombie 9 levels higher than him

In terms of the actual geology/geography/meteorology, TB and Mulgore are largely untouched. But politically? That hothead Garrosh is gonna execute Cairne! Dammit!

TB is really a focal point in the entire Cataclysm, Horde-side. The proximity to the natural disaster in the Barrens AND the Alliance’s perfidious attack from Northwatch means TB is more ground zero than Org. UC has already had its own internal cataclysm. Silvermoon? You could argue that it was “pre-cataclyzed” from its very introduction into WoW (since it’s still recovering from the Scourge’s attack on the Sunwell).

Also, from a lore perspective, I’d argue that the Elemental Invasion is a shamanistic event: The Earthen Ring is the primary NPC opposition to the event. And in the Horde, there are only two capitals with a population with a shamanistic background: TB and Org. Odd that the Twilight Cult and their master would attack where the opposition is likely to be strongest, but who knows. Maybe Cho’gall thinks shamans need to be taken out first.

Oh, and a fix that I haven’t seen mentioned yet: You can buy Northern Spice again!

The only problem with that method is that it might take you a while, since they massively jacked up the prices on all Heirlooms (except the ones you buy with Champion Seals, which aren’t that grindable). So if you’re looking to do it before Cata launches, you’re going to be in for some real nose-to-the-grindstone random queueing.

It might not be just PvP Prot–a lot of lower level toons are very overpowered right now. Theoretically everything’s supposed to be rebalanced at some point.

At least the flight point in TB is practically right next to the bank, so you can make a quick escape.

My lowbie orc warlock got caught in Org during one of the elemental attacks, and damned if I could locate an “evacuation portal”. I saw them everywhere in IF when I was there on another toon (though that toon was 80, so didn’t need to evacuate), but I couldn’t find a single one in Org. Fortunately, I was able to simply flee via the front gates.

Do those just automatically appear in your bags when the invasion starts? I didn’t see any in mine, but it could be I just wasn’t seeing them. And yeah, even if I had them, no idea what to do with them. So I just DPSed mobs. I did get the totem to free trapped citizens, both in SW and IF, but again, damned if I could actually spot one of these citizens.

Because there are no vendors/repairmen in the capital cities? :dubious:

One of my toons was fishing in the Dalaran fountain, and the player fishing next to her kept mounting up on her mammoth to clear her bags — completely covering multiple other players and preventing anybody from clicking bobbers (especially irritating when you’ve got a gold coin in the fountain with its timer ticking away) — instead of walking the five steps to the vendor in the shop right next to the fountain.

Reminded me of laughing at a player during Hallow’s End trick-or-treating at Light’s Hope Chapel. He landed at the FP at the same time I did, then mounted up to ride from the FP to the Chapel - which is about a 10-foot, 2-second run on foot. I mean, good grief, that’s even worse than the people who think they need to mount up to go from the bank to the AH in IF.

Yeah, almost two years of playing for me, and I still see mammoths in cities being used as “Everybody look at me! I’m a douchebag!” far more often than I see them being used for “legitimate” purposes. I still say that if you (the generic “you”) do indeed have a legitimate reason to mount your mammoth in a crowded city, it shouldn’t be asking too much of you to first move to where you’re not going to disrupt other players. OTOH, thanks to the vendor-equipped mammoths appearing right next to/on top of me, I’ve managed to acquire those fancy draenei robes for several of my toons
Professions, professions… hopefully 4.0.3 fixed the “disappearing professions” bug. I’ll have to log my orc warlock in today to see if she still knows Tailoring, which I had her train for the third time yesterday.

I’m also trying to decide what to do with my 80 paladin’s Tailoring. My 80 mage is also a Tailor, a profession far more useful to her than to my pally, and I really don’t need two max-level Tailors on the same server. So I’m thinking of power-leveling a new profession for my pally. Alchemy, maybe? That’s my first choice, since my “pocket alchemist” seems to have quit the game. OTOH, my paladin has some rare, expensive patterns (Royal Moonshroud Robe and Moonshroud Bracers) that I’d hate to lose, and my mage would need to go back and do all the Sons of Hodir and Knights of the Ebon Blade questlines she skipped so that she could access some of the tailoring patterns you need rep to buy from them (Glacial Bag and Abyssal Bag). Still, two Tailors is redundant, so…

My 80 warrior is currently a Miner/Skinner, and I’m considering dropping the Skinning and power-leveling Blacksmithing to replace it.

I don’t know if it was just the Cairne server or a general problem, but when we tried to do Thunder Bluff on Monday, it turned out to be bugged in that the citizens couldn’t be released. So there was this weird tableau on Elder Rise where a bunch of players were gathered around a tauren woman trapped in a cyclone, hands at her throat as if she were choking and couldn’t breathe. One would occasionally drop a totem, but for the most part they were all just standing there watching. Kinda creepy.

I picked mine up from a pile with a bobbing blue arrow over it (like the ones over the signposts where you posted warnings about cultists in the lead-in quests).

They’re not always handy. Sometimes it’s faster to just mount up and sell crap than it is to run to the nearest vendor or find some place to repair.

I’m not saying that they’re 100% necessary, as in the game will break if you don’t use them–simply that there are reasons for not just unilaterally disallowing their use. NPC blocking is already against the rules; if someone’s doing it, you can report them.

I’ve caught myself doing things like that before. It’s just autopilot–“I landed from a taxi, therefore I must mount.”

When TB bugged last night on Azgalor, it was even worse. The trapped citizens were phased so you couldn’t even find them. The piteous cries of nearly a dozen Tauren NPCs trapped in whirlwinds, blending with the nerdrage /yells of players complaining about not getting a shot at wind and water bosses, was just about more than I could take.

Actually, if you want to level them to max (525), you’ll need to get them to 84. The final recipes for almost all of the professions are sold by NPCs in Twilight Highlands, which is a heavily phased area–the NPCs don’t even become available until you’ve taken back certain territory, and you can’t even get the quest chain to start doing that until you’re 84. I’m not positive how high you can go before you have to do this, but I think it’s 500.

Hooray!

On Lightbringer, I actually already have pretty much all of the heirloom chest & shoulder pieces - they’re just currently spread around to appropriate alts on that server. I’m ready to send the plate stuff elsewhere, since both my paladin and my warrior on Lightbringer are level 80 and don’t need them any more (and I don’t have any plans to further level my DK, since I don’t enjoy DKs at all). My priest is wearing the heirloom chest/shoulders/mace, having inherited the chest/shoulders from my mage, so once she gets to 80 those can go (I have a warlock on Lightbringer, but she’s my bank alt and I don’t have plans to level her any further). So all I really need to purchase now are weapons and trinkets, and with three level 80 toons available to grind the Argent Tournament dailies, those shouldn’t be hard to get (though my warrior hasn’t opened up all of the dailies yet). I just wish there was an heirloom shield I could send to my PvP prot warrior.

True dat. Rogues.

You don’t even have to go that far - the NPC standing next to the fountain (who gives out the fishing quests) is a vendor. If you stand next to her and fish, you don’t even have to move!

I haven’t seen any of the level 80 elite elementals during the attacks–though i was unable to get in to the game last night. The one attack I participated in had level 80 non-elite air elementals in the mage quarter of SW. Think they had about 38K hit points, and my druid handled them easily solo…

Okay, so I went to WoWWiki to look up Thrall in Cataclysm, and HOLY SHIT.

Thrall | WoWWiki | Fandom

That sound? It’s the screaming of thousands of tormented shippers around the world.

I foresee Varian/Jaina in our future now.

In other news, I’m hoping something actually happens with nelfs seeing that (spoiler):

Malfurion wakes up. In WoW things have been pretty quiet on the nelf front. And since Furion has done the whole ‘temporary alliance with a demon I want to punch in the face’ thing I kinda wanted him to back Jaina and tell Varian to suck it up and work with Thrall for long enough to defeat Deathwing. I mean, it isn’t as if Tyrande is going to do more than stand around in the Stormwind throne room…grumble

I believe you have to be near one of the rifts to see the elites. Otherwise you just fight never ending waves of non elites.

Like SFG, however, i had no idea what to do with the reinforcements and just deleted it out of my bags. Did anyone figure out where you’re supposed to use these?

i’m kind of “meh” about the bosses. I think theres a really cool idea in there somewhere, but it was a little disappointing that they were so facerollable. I thought Cata was supposed usher in a return to BC levels of difficulty.

Clawdio - Aegwynn

There are red arrows all around the cities that look like Hunter’s Marks floating in midair. If you use the barricade item at an arrow, it puts one up. However, there are only a finite number in predetermined locations, so if you’re slow, you may not see any arrows because they’ve all been snagged.

I changed my internet connection settings to “No Proxy” and then everything started working again too. I usually use Firefox, but I had read somewhere in the WoW forums that this worked well for changing the settings in IE, since Firefox sometimes changes the proxy settings without knowledge of the user. Worked for them…and worked for me. Yay!

My impression was that the event started with waves of non-elites, then progressed to waves of elites. I didn’t see a single elite during the earlier part of the event, and I didn’t see a single non-elite later.

We’re not in Cata yet. These are just minibosses with no real trash to speak of.

I think the mini-bosses are mostly a good-will, “here’s some free stuff, we really hope you buy Cata” kinda deal. None of them are particularly hard, even on my druid with a sub-4K gear score. A party in raid gear will just destroy these guys.

Dammit, I’m getting excited for Cataclysm again. I was making a lot of noise a month ago about how I just wasn’t all that interested any more and the new locales put me off…but man, I want in on it now.

I’ve wiped once in a pug, but yeah, I was expecting them to be harder. Just watch for the poo on the ground (or count on your healer to heal you through it).

And a party with a Lvl 78 tank will wipe. Fortunately the queue moves so quickly we were able to find a suitable replacement in no time.
