And the good news for today is that it appears they hotfixed the daily quest reward bug, and they’re back to paying 13g 23s.
I find myself in dilemma. I’m at 390 Inscription right now on my Mage. Is it worth keeping it going, or would it be better to switch to Alchemy? I don’t really look at professions as a way to make money so much as a supplement to my own play, and in that context Inscription as it currently is seems of limited value. There’s always a need for Alchemy consumables and transmutations, whereas there’s a limit on how many glyphs one needs.
Any reason I should press on with Inscription, or would it be smarter to switch to Alchemy? I’m also thinking about dropping Herbalism for Enchanting and using a Cataclysm lowbie to procure material for both professions.
Trying to run your own economy within your alts is going to be a fantastic waste of time. At the very least you’d need to maintain herbalism on your main in order to provide appropriate materials for your other profession. A low-level alt cannot supply a main. Being able to collect briarthorn isn’t very useful when you need dream foil to make anything useful.
If you’d rather have alchemy than inscription, then you should switch. If you want alchemy and enchanting, then you’ll have a problem. Any combination is viable, but only if you interact with other players (aka “make money”).
I think you misunderstood me, which I suppose could be my fault. If I drop Inscription and Herbalism for Alchemy and Enchanting, I’ll be starting at 1/525 for both. I’ll be starting Cataclysm by leveling a goblin. All the herbs and BOEs I pick up as the goblin levels can be passed to the Mage to level his professions. It wouldn’t cover everything, but it would shave off a lot of the immediate costs.
I understand how the market works and I use it as I need to. I just prefer to defray the monetary cost by investing time where possible.
is there a way to move stuff on the bar at the bottom of the screen? I want to move my skinning and herbalism to somwhere either down or to the right. My fireball is on 1 and my frostbolt is on 5, if I learn any other spells I would like them together.
You should be able to simply drag and drop abilities in your action bars, unless you’re in combat. If it’s not letting you, go into your interface options and make sure the bars are unlocked. You can also enable extra bars from there if you need more space for buttons.
If the bars are locked, you can move stuff by dragging while holding shift. I prefer to leave the bars locked, so I won’t move anything accidentally.
I am at the netherweave gathering part of my first aid training, and have decided to take y’all’s advice and buy it instead of farming it, but I need to know something: can I buy a bolt of it and it be the same as buying it in stacks?
Thanks

Hi Q.
Do not buy bolts of netherweave. Those are used by tailors to make stuff; they can’t be used to make bandages. You need to buy “Netherweave Cloth”; accept no substitutes.
Go into your game interface menu - it is the box that looks like a little computer. There should be an option for Interface in there; look in the “Interface” section and there will be something about “action bars” - go in there and click the options to turn on all of your action bars. This will give you some extra bars on the bottom right or on the right side of your screen that you can drag skinning/herbalism and other rarely used abilities (such as your ice armor and mystic intellect or whatever those buffs are called) to the “harder-to-reach” bars. You should be able to drag them just by clicking holding and dragging.
(ETA: I’m thinking of how it worked in the old patch; it’s possible that the new patch has all of those bars default to “on”; I really don’t know.)
For anyone who is not familiar with the Pilgrim’s Bounty holiday event (which started this weekend), it’s an excellent way to quickly level your Cooking skill from 1 to 300+. I did it last year on my (now mothballed) warlock, and this year my 80 pally who never even trained Cooking 1 before yesterday levelled up to over 200. I’ll finish him up tonight. The cost is pretty minimal (you can buy all the recipes/ingredients from the holiday vendors) - in fact, you probably make the money back by turning in the related holiday quests.
The only problem I had was in Thunder Bay, where either the holiday NPCs all disappeared during the elemental invasion event or I was just too dumb to find them. I went back a few hours later but of course another invasion was going on, so I was still stuck. I’ll have to get back to it tonight.
I don’t think I’m going to go for the “Pilgrim” title on this toon - I’ll be out of town Wed-Sat so realistically I’d have to get all the achievements done tonight. Frankly that doesn’t sound too appealing.
Just a heads up for people. MMO Champ is confirming 4.0.3a patch on Tuesday so if you’re toon is parked in Dal today’s the day to move it to Org or whichever major city of your choosing because they’re removing city portals from both Dalaran and Shattrath.
They’re also putting in the new Troll/Gnome starting zones along with the new race-class combinations excluding Worgen/Goblin. So if you really want a Troll Druid or a Tauren Paladin now’s the time to roll it. Same for Gnome Priests and Dwarf Shamans.
This is a list of the things that WILL be in the patch:
* Portals in Dalaran/Shattrath Removed
* Class trainers in Dalaran where portals once were
* New race-class combinations (excluding worgen/goblin)
* New Gnome/Troll starting areas
* Changes to existing zones
* New cata load screens
* New cata intro cinematic
* New cata login screen
* New music
* City Quartermasters, with rep tabards
* Bug fixes
* Class balancing
* Druids, paladins, priests, and shaman will have their talent trees reset
* Experience required to gain levels 71 through 80 is being reduced by 20%
* New tamable hunter pets (Monkey, fox, dog, and beetle, as well as new skins for existing pet classes.)
I don’t know about the rest of you hunters, but I have my list of pets that I want to tame (Foxes! Chromaggus!) and I’m going to be super busy on Tuesday.
I’m still bummed about the portals. That’s going to make dailies a heck of a slog.
Oh, sweet, the experience drop is in this patch? I just hit 77 on the Mage, those last few levels will be nice and quick now.
Also all that other stuff. Glee. Losing the portals does suck; I’m just glad I leveled up a taxi in time for the change.
Wait, crap, I haven’t actually bought Cataclysm yet.

I think I’m going to put my Explorer title on hold for a few days. There’s some pets I want to tame in Northrend and I should get to it tonight since I’m hearthed in Dal.
You will be losing a bit of end-game pure power, as I don’t think Alchemy offers any bonuses like the Inscription shoulder enchants (which are basically equivalent to the bonuses from enchanting, jewelcrafting, or blacksmithing). Mixology will save. you. money. by making your flasks last twice as long, and the perpetual healing/mana potions (and flask) are nice, but more for leveling/questing than raiding. I haven’t read much of the spoilers, but I’d assume there will be about 3 more glyphs per class, to go with the 3 new higher-level spells.
Mixology boosts flask/elixir effects such that alchemy is equivalent to everything else (when flasks and elixirs are usable).
Ah, thanks, didn’t read the fine print on that (and thought it was just the duration-extending effect). So never mind.
Is the Explorer achievement changing at all with the new content? Can we wait until we have old world flying to pick up the title, or is it going away?

Anyone know if the lady in the inn in Shatt or the guy in Dalaran will still port you to CoT?
I need about three more runs of Heroic: Escape from Durnhold to reach exalted with CoT (and thus get my Burning Crusader achieve).
