New WoW General Discussion Thread 6/8/10

Well it was announced January 3rd with the following caveat:
Here you will find a list of hotfixes that address various issues related to the release of patch 4.0.3a and World of Warcraft: Cataclysm. While many have already been deployed on all realms, some may not be implemented until the next time your realm is restarted. We will continue to update this thread in the days ahead as additional hotfixes are applied.
I would assume this was a server only update so this probably went live immediately.

Dear RNG - when my rogue is crafting Green Lenses giving me all caster enchants is not fair, the bloody dress wearers get Engineering helms from the trainers you know.

The march to 85 continues on the warlock but it’s quite slow, about two thirds along the XP bar now so hoping to ding tonight.

Inscription is a grind to level, especially when you’re at the point of doing research every day. I think it takes several months to learn them all from the get-go. And it’s generally not profitable unless you’re one of those players who like to play the AH more or less seriously. But if you’re just doing it for the joy of the profession, don’t let this put you off doing it.

That said, RogueRacer, I’m going to assume that you don’t have a tank or heal spec. I’m not sure what aspects of CTMod you’re using so I’ll throw out the most common addons that I see people using (and which I use).

 • Recount (damage meter)
 • Omen (threat meter)
 • Power Auras (visual notifications for whatever you want to be notified of, kitchen sink setup but once you get it sussed it’s really nice)
 • Fortexorcist (for tracking your lock dots on multiple targets)
 • Quartz (cast bar addon that also has a swing timer and can track buffs/debuffs on the current target, very nice for huntering)
 • Shock and Awe (May be helpful for getting up to speed on current shaman rotation which you can adjust)
 • Magic Runes (DK rune addon that lets me stick the runes right under my DK’s feet)

Not sure if you’re going to be raiding so I’ll leave those off for now.

Interesting bug after yesterday’s maintenance period - our guild’s newest bank tab (bought very recently, maybe the last week or so) turned up totally empty. There weren’t any transactions listed for it after the patch period, and nothing that would clean it out before that point - plenty of deposits, in fact. My husband is one of our guild officers, and I’m a banker; after we confirmed that the logs didn’t show any apparent misdeeds, he reported the glitch to GMs.

This was my tailor, so it sounds like this is what I noticed. My non-tailor pally didn’t notice any sudden increase, except that he was getting more cloth from Heroics than from regular dungeons.

I think there are a lot more void zones and things like that to get out of, for sure, and some DPS are better than others at getting out of it.

I have noticed the phenomena of almost completely running out of mana (to the point where all my spells are unavailable) and somehow being able to heal for a miraculously long time. Word of Glory has saved my ass a couple of times in this situation, as has the timely availability of my Divine Plea cooldown. It’s amazing how long you can scrape by at <5% mana, even if it might mean sacrificing a DPS or two. There’s that talent that makes your WoG sometimes not use up your Holy Power, and I love getting two instant, free, big heals back to back.

Agree. Should I be reforging mastery to haste? I haven’t done much reforging at all, but I probably should if mastery is really that useless. The idea of it (creating a shield on the target of the heal) seems sound.

That’s a pretty scary fight to heal the first time, but the boss does seem to give a little bit if time to respond to that attack. It’s kind of a fun fight (but very hard unless everyone is on the ball with your interrupts).

When replacing boots with spurs with higher level boots, do you lose the spurs?

Thanks

Q

Yes. The spurs are now part of the boot they’re on, and can’t be removed to be put on the new ones. You have to buy new spurs if you want them on the new boots. The spurs basically count as a permanent enchant.

Something I just thought of…Quasi, are the spurs on Wolkie’s boots? They don’t give a speed enhancement above level 70, so you might just not want to bother getting new ones.

A lot of people (myself included) use Skada, which is Recount & Omen rolled into one, as an alternative.

Next question regarding mount speed: If the spurs gi ve you 4% more speed, then do a combination of the spurs, trinket and gloves give you a total of 12% more?

Wish I’d known aabout more buying more spurs earlier, because I changed Wolkie’s boots at least 8 times while levelling him up to 80…

Quasi some mounted speed boost enchants do not stack with other similar effects, and I personally find the boost to be not really worth the effort to get it. Pretty much the only time I’m riding where speed matters is PVP battlegrounds, and there is usually a paladin with that group speed buff thing they have anyway. I do like a run speed boost on my boots, because that helps in dungeons a little bit.

Quasi, spurs and other speed enhancements won’t work after level 70. Wolkie is getting no benefit from those spurs anyway. Putting new ones on the new boots is a waste of money.

Well, it’s kind of a fun fight. He could kill everyone, but chooses not to - the spell that he channels after the “down to 1HP” ability is called Stay of Execution. It heals both you and him for 10% every time it ticks. Let it tick once and then interrupt. The spell text says “Baron Ashbury has pity on you, but only so he can continue inflicting pain!”

As long as folks can interrupt other abilities (Mend in particular) and the healer gets DPS and himself up to ~20% or so after each Asphyxiate you’ll be fine. Well, as long as the DPS is high enough… as is true for most heroics.

It’s also very useful for noticing the healers that haven’t done the fight before (or did but don’t understand it) - they heal everyone to full after every Asphyxiate (instead of saving big heals for the last phase) and go OOM very quickly.

Yeah, I knew about level 70 and above not making any difference in the speed of the mount, I just wanted the spurs for the other guys, and now that I’m questing better, I thought maybe I’d level faster if I rode faster.

I guess spurs would work on a gryph as well (as long as one’s below 70, of course)?

Do things like interrupts actually work on bosses? TBH, I’ve stayed on the PEW-PEW KILL side of things, because I come from the world of Japanese RPGs, where most of the time the support spells never actually work against bosses. I tried the hunter shot that is supposed to interrupt spells on a couple of bosses and it never did anything so I kind of gave up.

Depends on the boss, but interrupting the Baron is part of the mechanic for the fight so it definitely works.

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. You can tell because the cast bar will have a shield around it if it can not be interrupted.

The hunter interrupt is rather tricky because it has a flight-time component. I’ve often thought I’d get the interrupt only to see the cast go off while my silencing arrow flew. Melee are generally best for interrupting (and often if it’s just one spell on a long cooldown a tank can handle it). I know my DK has been doing a ton of interrupting in Cata heroics.

Other support-type abilities (roots, slows, silences, death grip, etc) are generally things bosses are immune to (but often doing these things to adds are part of the mechanic).

Although sometimes NOT doing them to adds is part of the mechanic (says the DK tank who death-gripped a fire spirit on the third boss in Grim Batol. Oops.)

Make sure you are looking at your target’s cast bar. if the cast has a little shield next to it and a thick gray border it cannot be interrupted. Anything that does not have that shield/border can (and probably should) be interrupted.

As a tank i’ll take smart dps that does the little things (like interupt) over total damage output any day. And i think they’ve done a great job this expansion of making all those little things usefull and matter a great deal.

Oh, okay. Gotcha!

And spurs will work on a personal gyphon at least for the 10 levels between 60 (when you get flying) and 70 (where they stop working). It won’t do a thing for flight point gyphons, though.

… is in stealth mode and I can’t seem to cancel it. It slows him down, so I tried to go into his stealth icon and I right-clicked it. When I did that, it made the icon stop blinking, but he didn’tt come out of stealth.

Any ideas, y’all?

Also, I found this when I was looking for ways to make my cat happy and what to feed him (meat and fish): http://www.moviesmusicgamesandmore.com/wow-hunter-pet-guide.html.

Guess I can get what he needs in the AH, but that stuff sure is expensive. The vendors I’ve visited so far only have breads. If I have to, I’ll get it from AH, but any suggestgions as to alternatives?

Maybe go to SW and find a butcher shop, or maybe the inn?

Thanks

Q

Never mind about stealth for the cat. I finally got it figured out, sorry!
