New WoW General Discussion Thread 6/8/10

Unfortunately, with the new, linear quest system, you probably won’t be able to quest any further in that particular area if you don’t complete that quest (that is, they won’t give you the next quest until you finish that one). Fortunately, there are other quest hubs in Hyjal. If you’ve talked to everybody so far, at least one or two people should have given you quests to go visit other shrines in the zone. Each shrine seems to have its own set of quests.
I’ve run into a really annoying macro-related thing on my hunter. For some time now I’ve put my trinkets that have an “on use” ability into “slot 14” and connected them to this macro:

#showtooltip Arcane Shot
/use 14
/cast Arcane Shot

This hunter recently completed the quest at the Argent Vanguard and picked up Fezzik’s Pocketwatch, which now sits in “slot 14”. And now, every time I use Arcane Shot while the trinket’s “on use” ability is on cooldown, I’m hearing that annoying “fail” sound effect that goes along with the “Item is not ready yet” message on the screen. I’ve used this same macro with quite a number of other trinkets previously, as well as using the same macro with other abilities on other toons with different trinkets, and I’ve never gotten this sound before. It’s driving me nuts! Anybody know a way to mute that sound? And any idea why I’m hearing it now when I never heard it before?

#showtooltip Arcane Shot
/console Sound_EnableSFX 0
/use 14
/console Sound_EnableSFX 1
/cast Arcane Shot

“We don’t need no water, let the motherfucker burn!”, is what I was singing to myself as Usum kept running around town trying to line himself up exactly so he could toss the water out of the mufuh’n bucket.

Once we stood right in the damn thing and couldn’t get that green target thing to come up.

Musta took us 10 minutes or more, man!

MEMO

To: Horaz, Tanus, Tailspin, Sugrfoot, Usumbij, Clawdy, **BoyHowdy ** and Braverkerl:

Subject: Gold and Bling

Date: 2.27.2011

Dear Fellow Alliance Toons:

It has come to our attention that our gold reserve is quickly being depleted and is not being… repleted.

This must stop, effective now!

We realize that many of you want to upgrade your gear for offense and defense, and that is fine. But you aren’t bringing in any gold to offset the additional bling you keep buying, dammit! It seems like almost every other day one of you is standing at a mailbox after asking for g’s so you can buy gear.

Aren’t you ashamed? And what do you think the other toons are saying about you?
“Standing at the mailbox again, I see. You must have an offshore account or a sugar daddy (in case of the ladies).”

This ain’t no golden goose, ain’t no party, disco, or foolin’ around! If y’all don’t start bringing in some money with your professions, all ten of us are gonna wind up selling or pawning our gear! And what’s that gonna look like?

Beginning Monday, we want to see *on our desks * a plan from each of you as to how you plan on making yourselves more self-sufficient.

I’d just as soon not have to go back to K3 and start having to farm leather and that spider silk, if I can help it! I’m stuck on Hyjal and Double L is in Darkshire and neither one of us can concentrate on questing because every time we turn around there’s another mail waiting on us asking for gold!

Sorry to say this, but if the spending doesn’t stop, we’re going to have to think about deleting y’all.

Reed and Heed!

Wolkie and Wollkie (Double L)

=======================================================

Heh! How’s that for keeping them in line and avoiding down-sizing?

Remember, I’m deep into RP (and bat-shit. Okay - shup!:)), so this came to mind tonight as I was working with one toon after another levelling them up one notch each.

My toons help each other out with material they need for their professions, but I also need to keep them protected and combat-ready, so the two W’s are the “bank”, so to speak, and we have to keep a tight rein on the spending.

And it’s not just the ladies, either, it’s the guys too!

Many’s the time I’ve heard BoyHowdy say, “Oh now that’s cute! Let me see how much I’ve got to ask Wolkie and Wollkie for!”

See what I mean?

Gotta watch 'em every minute!

Just a bit of Quasi-Satire, y’all. Helps to pass the time.

Thanks

Q

Quasi–there is really no need to spend gold on gear while leveling. The stuff you get from drops and quest rewards is enough to carry you all the way to 85. Maybe you might want to grab a rare piece if the price is right once in a while, but buying a complete set of gear is just wasting gold.

Yeah, but some of that stuff that’s dropped is either too high a level for my toon to use or too low to do anything but vend or auction, Oak.

Many’s the time I see mail dropped when my toon’s in leather.

Maybe I’m not fighting in the right zones, but I found that when I level up and there’s no better weapon available as a drop, I can get it in the AH.

As SFG once told me, and as I wish you could, I need you looking over my shoulder as I am playing to see what I’m doing and what my mistakes are!

Thanks!

Q

From the outside looking in, it looks like you are spending a lot of gold to update your stuff almost every time you level. There’s no real reason to do that. Particularly for your playstyle, a weapon oughta last you 5-10 levels, unless you just happen to get something better as loot or reward. Same for all your other gear. It really isn’t going to make a huge difference if your using something that requires a level lower than your toon’s present level…or several levels below your toon’s current level.

Now there’s certainly nothing wrong with playing however makes you happy. I just think you could get more bang for your buck in other ways. Also think you’re gonna miss all that gold you’re spending when your guys get high enough to train epic flying and need 5k gold each…

Oh Og, Oak

You have more confidence in me than I do!

I know I have Wolkie stuck right now, but at some point my brain will engage correctly and I’ll get that quest on Hyjal done.

But in the meantime, I am having so much fun breezing my other toons through all the quests y’all have helped me get through before, that epics just don’t matter to me.

There was a time a few months ago when I loved doing BG’s, but hell, I didn’t really know what I was doing in them! Just trying to get honor points and following the crowd as y’all instructed me to do. I don’t even do those anymore, just levelling my other toons.

That doesn’t mean I don’t wanna get Wolkie to 85, though. It just means I learned a whole bunch of stuff from y’all that I can now use when I’m not playing him.

Got Hogger on my own with all the toons who had that quest, and knew all the right moves and what to use. I don’t know from dungeons, epics, etc., although I would like to participate sometime with the understanding that I don’t know my asshole from my elbow!

And the “memo” really was just satire.

I like to take role playing seriously, but I was hoping y’all would think it was funny.

I was going to have the ladies shed some clothes and hang around some of the military posts next!

Wolkie the pimp!

Thanks, Oakie!

Q

The memo was kinda funny. Remember-so long as you are not griefing others, it is not possible to play WoW incorrectly. If you’re having fun, you’re doing it right.

I’ve always been mystified by the people who blow all their gold while levelling and have nothing alter on. Unless you’re very bad at making money, or don’t btoher, gold is pretty easy in this game. You can easily break at least a 1000 just levelling one toon to 80, much less 85. And that’s merely quest rewards and selling old gear.

I sit here with a copy of Cataclysm, wondering. Do I dare?

Big thanks - that seems to have done the trick

No.

Well, Wolkie has made several thousand in g by farming leather, and he and all the alts have enough. Admittedly, with him (now at 81), I did spend a lot on his gear being that he was the first character I ever played, but I did learn somewhat from my mistakes.

The other thing which must be remembered is that I don’t play the game the same way as most people, so I don’t do dungeons or epics or not even that many bg’s, so I don’t get the big rewards that everyone else does.

And again, the memo was a joke. I write stories about my toons sometimes and that was just the latest one.

Thanks

Q

Ha, funny.

Ah, yes. Stranglethorn Vale. One of my favorite questing locales, and much easier this time around. A couple of new things, like that little lasher thingie which becomes one’s companion while in SV. And then there’s Booty Bay! I missed that place for sure - falling off the ramps into the water and having to swim back.

Funny how you can actually get sentimental about these places.

Q

Just questing in Duskwood again, and I may be seeing a pop culture reference where none was intended, but I just made the connection of “Abercrombie & Stitches” = “Abercrombie & Fitch”.

Pushed my Worgen Feral Druid up to 46 this weekend, doing almost nothing but questing (ran one instance as DPS). Dungeons would be even faster, but I’m really enjoying the new quests. I find myself hanging around after I’ve leveled past what I’m working on (thanks, Heirlooms and gathering XP!), just to see how everything works out.

I remembered how to do it via the UI! The trick is that it’s not a button–it’s a context menu, and the option only shows up when the person on online. (That’s because you can’t make an offline person the GM, even with the slash command.) To promote someone without having to type anything, what you do is right-click their name in the guild roster (while they’re online) and select the option to make them Guild Leader. Voila!

1.) Buffs will make a big difference, especially in five-mans where group composition is very variable.

2.) Fight length will make a big difference.

3.) Keeping up your proper rotation will make a big difference.

4.) Having a single target, versus having to swap between different single targets, versus being able to AOE the shit out of multiple targets, will all make a big difference.

4.) Blowing your CDs, especially in conjunction with Hero/Lust/TW, will make a big difference.

I roffled. Thanks Quasi!

On the subject of money: you probably are just buying upgrades too often. Most of your upgrades won’t come from random drops (which is where they’ll be the wrong type for your characters), but from quests. You definitely don’t need to upgrade every level, or every other level, or every three levels… I wouldn’t ever even start to worry about buying an upgrade until my current gear was about 10 levels behind.

Yesssssssssssssssss.

Sounds like steam escaping.

I’m pretty sure I’m not going to be trying any serious raiding, just hanging out with the BDL again and checking out the new content.

Also, my mouse crapped out (losing the ability to scroll up is actually more of a problem than you’d think), so I, ah, went the MMO geek route yesterday. Razer Naga. :o It actually works really well for City of Heroes too, but the addon for WoW actually looks really well-written and customizable. As in, better than Bartender.

Cool, thanks. Now I’ll try to remember it

Turns out the GL-in-exile is only back temporarily, using a 10-day free trial, so I’ll hang onto the GL position myself for the time being, until he’s back for good. He told me his knee injury (which is what has kept him from working these last months) is nearly healed, so he should be able to get himself back to work and back in the game before too much longer.

Meanwhile, I already mentioned that I’ve shut off XP on my level 80 hunter, and I’ve discovered that the “XP nerf in NR at level 80” also affects my pets. So I’ve got these pets sitting at level 79, and unless I go poke around in Vashj’ir or Hyjal or something they’re going to be sitting at 79 for a very long time. I discovered this after spending a considerable amount of time farming Borean Leather (I farmed up more than 100) from level 79-80 mobs and finding that my pet’s XP bar had barely moved.
