New WoW General Discussion Thread 6/8/10

Fishing gear and patience.

This page at El’s outlines requirements and recommendations for the Stranglethorn tournament. In fact, this page is the general guide to that contest. Good reading.

This page at El’s is about the Kaluak tournament.

Interesting facts:

You only need skill 1 in fishing to catch fish in fish pools, which is where all the action is in the tournaments. Fishing in open water is a literal waste of time, since tournament fish will only be caught out of pools.

The fishing isn’t the hard part. Logistics and reconnaissance are. Transportation (quick movement from fishing spot to fishing spot, and back to the turn-in); storage (wasting time managing bag space); locating the next fishing pool; those kinds of issues.

Other players are issues too. On a PvP server, fishing day is hunting day for gankers. Also, non-PvP interference with people’s fishing (like covering a fisher’s bobber with a mount or their bodies) is common, both for unassociated griefers and for “posse members” of less scrupulous competitors.

I’m dps, not skill position, so my kind are dime-a-dozen, but I sadface when I get into a partially-completed run, mostly because I’m still grinding up tabarded reputation and want all the kills I can. Of course, I have to balance that against the time wasted not killing (like, ghostrunning back for the instance entrance).

For all of that, I’m a good trooper and do what I can without complaining. Even if I’m joining a pug in progress because almost everyone ragequit on an incompetent tank (who, for instance, doesn’t believe in CC). I’ll see it through to the bitter end (very often, a kick of the baddy once the embargo time passes, or else when the group breaks up again.)

Personally, I picture my Tauren DK wrapping his massive plated fist around the stem of the plant and just ripping everything off from the base up.

I think you’re suffering from a massive misconception. Hybrid classes aren’t massively nerfed in DPS compared to pure DPS classes. There may be a *small *gap at the *highest *levels (the so-called “hybrid tax”), where everyone is the best players with the best gear, but it’s pretty negligible and *much *less of a factor than gear or skill. A Retribution Paladin would be an excellent addition to any group.

You wouldn’t want to try to DPS with a Protection or Holy spec, but if you set up at least one of your two possible trees into Ret, you should be good to go.

ETA: If you want to check out where Ret is in the pack of DPS specs, go check out http://stateofdps.com/.

I finished The Shattering last night. Interesting book…it definitely fills out Garrosh a bit more and puts him in a slightly more sympathetic light than most of the Hordeside stuff in the game about him (that I’ve experienced so far) does. I’m still not sure if I care for Blizzard stuffing so much game lore into novels and comics, though. It seems like you miss a lot that way, if you aren’t constantly trying to keep up with the comics and books. I spend too much time playing the game as it is, without making reading about the game outside the game more time-consuming.

Is the War Against the Nightmare referenced at all in-game, anywhere? The mentions of it in The Shattering confused me, since it seems like a major piece of Azeroth-history that really should have at least been given some mention in the game. The game is still the primary world, right? It HAS to be by far the more profitable branch of what Blizzard is doing with Azeroth.

You discover that the “good guys” have won out against the Nightmare at the end of the Hyjal quest chain (at the Gates of Sothann), where Cenarius is called out of the Emerald Dream (after the Nightmare is purged) to pwn a Twilight Dragon attack.

I can’t recall any other overt connections. Even the event mentioned above is only subtly related; if you knew that the Emerald Dream was corrupted by the Nightmare and impassible to the druids, and if you realized that the Gates of Sothann was one of the Dream Gates, and that Cenarius coming out of it should have been impossible as long as the Nightmare held… then you could put 2 and 2 together and realize that the Nightmare was over. But that’s a lot of rather obscure lore-related "if"s.

That IS really bizarre; with all the build-up, I’d have thought they would have gotten at least a raid, if not an expansion, out of the Nightmare. But to end it without even a quest chain? Maybe they’re planning on bringing it back or something.

Note to SFG:

  1. I put the “SAY” bar back in, and so far no problems. I guess maybe some of my in-game friends have tried to speak with me and couldn’t get through because of me deleting it.

  2. Thanks for the click both sides of the mouse thing! That is REALLY helping a lot in getting Wolkie facing correctly again.

Here’s something new I’m doing and I wish I could break myself of it: I must be double clicking the action bar keys to the point where they disappear and I have to pull them back out of the spellbook; or they change places with each other

That’s a bit of a headache, so I’d like to lock those action bar keys.

Also, do I need “auto-attack” on the action bar, and toggle it every time?

And yeah, I wish you could look over my shoulder and watch me play as well. I don’t suppose that would work if I gave you remote access, would it?

Note to gnoitall and martu: Thanks for the tips on the fishing tournaments, but this sounds like something that would piss me off (the blocking of my toon, etc), and I don’t need to be sent into a rage. (“Don’t make me rage. You wouldn’t like me in a rage.” - with apologies to Dr. Bruce Banner ;))

I have tried fishing in a pool, and it’s hard to judge when you don’t know where the cast is going.

Anyway I’m 25 points away from 300 in fishing and that means I can do some quests.

Thanks

Q

If you look around in your Interface pane (click on the little computer icon at the bottom of your screen…the same one you used to exit the game or logout, then click on the “Interface” button on the menu that comes up), probably under Action Bars, you should be able to lock the buttons down somewhere on there. I’ve been using Bartender for so long that I might have forgotten how to do it on the default bars.

No, right-clicking on a neutral or hostile mob (if your cursor turns into a sword when you mouse-over, you can attack it) should start your auto-attack without needing the button.

That’s true…I should have realized that when I did the Hyjal quests. I guess Malfurion’s presence in the world would indicate that, too.

There was always speculation that the Dream would figure into a future expansion…I guess that’s pretty much out now, then.

By default, the ` key will toggle the lock on your action bar. On my keyboard it’s directly to the left of the 1 key. You will want to keep it locked unless you want to move your buttons around.

What happened once could happen again. And there’s always the Caverns of Time.

Is this Nightmare the same one as in Stormrage? I know Stormrage got kicked out of canon because it screwed with the Cata timeline.

Thanks, jayjay and Skammie:smack:

Again, I knew that. Both of that.

Q

Yeah, same Nightmare.

Really? Nothing in-game seems to contradict the information from the book I’ve seen synopsized elsewhere. Certainly, Staghorn’s madness, Malfurion’s and Ysera’s return, Cenarius’ return… seems consistent with the end-state of the novel.

I’m curious. Where did you hear that the novel was de-canonized?

shakes fist Where’s a cite when I need one? I’ve been looking but I gotta get back to work. I could have sworn that I read somewhere (wow.joystiq rings a bell) that parts of the timeline didn’t make sense so parts of the novel didn’t work.

Why include important shit in the game when they can force us to read books/comics that are varying degrees of terrible we want to know what happened?

Not unless they were standing right next to you. Say is only visible to people in your immediate surroundings, maybe 10 yards or so. But if someone standing next to you was trying to talk to you in Say, you wouldn’t see it in your chat log with that channel unselected.

Moving with the mouse like that is actually one of the easiest ways to do it. I have my autorun toggle bound to a thumb button on my mouse, too. That way I can push both buttons to run (or fly) in a direction, then hit the mouse thumb button, and I’ll keep moving in that direction until I hit the thumb button again, or hit both mouse buttons again.

Unfortunately, a lot of this stuff (like how to control your character) is the kind of thing I’d have to be physically there for. No way to see your keyboard and mouse through a remote connection.

Welcome to the wonderful world of randomness that is fishing. If you’re trying to fish out of a pool, what you’ll want to do is cast repeatedly until one of the casts gets your bobber inside the circle. So you cast, wait for the bobber to show up, and then if it’s not in the right place, you cast again without waiting for the timer to go down or for a fish to bite.

Really? I don’t recall that at all, but then again I’ve had my bar lock/unlock bound to Ctrl+Alt+A for forever.

I also think that’s incorrect. If they didn’t remove Knaak’s terrible bullshit from Warcraft canon (and in fact enshrined his Mary Sue with an in-game NPC), I can’t imagine that they’d pull anything else.

Well, now you have me second guessing myself. It’s definitely that key for me, but now I’m less sure it was the default. I may have changed it to be that key when I first started playing years ago… If I’m wrong about that, sorry Quasi.

Possibly. I use Bartender too, but I know I’ve had ` bound to my mount macro for years. (Haven’t figured out how to bind it to Guppet’s mount button though. I should take a poke at it)

Other topic: I’m putting myself through 5man heroics as disc to try to get a better handle on it. It’s a little odd for me to discover that raiding as disc is actually easier than 5 man – IME it was the other way around for Holy. Last night, it was H HOO. Protadin/arms war/enh shaman/mage comp. I found myself sweating a lot more than with Holy, and the shaman ate floor a couple times, war almost died on Rajh. I feel like I should be using PoH more, but it also seems to hit for much less than in Holy spec, so I’m not certain what the best way to go about it is. I can use PS, yes, but that only gives me a breather for one person.

Shit! I bought master riding (Breaking The Sound Barrier) by mistake just now.

See, I’ve been playing all day, basically getting my “bank” in decent shape by hunting and skinning, and was going to wait till I got 10k gold before buying it, but I mistakenly clicked on “train” at the wrong place and now I have it, and she charged me 4250.00 for it.

I had just landed in Valiance Keep and was going to taxi over to Gundrak, so I went over to the flight master and next to him is the flying trainer, whom I had never noticed before.

So out of curiosity I clicked on her to see what was next and how much it would be. Well, I read it and wanted to click off her and go to the flightmaster and take off, but for some stupid reason (fatigue, I think), I clicked on her train button, so now Wolkie’s down to 3k from 7k500.

I guess I shouldn’t complain, I was gonna have to buy it anyway sooner or later, but what if that had been real money?

Oh well.

Q

You’ll enjoy the faster flight. I have only bought that for one character, letting the other one just be a slowbie, but you really get used to it.
Consider it an investment to farming even faster
