New WoW General Discussion Thread 6/8/10

There were around 18 of us, so it was really like you just moved and things died around you. People were laughing over Vent that they couldn’t even get 2 shots in.

Our AQ40 raid didn’t finish because we didn’t have enough people for the gameplay mechanics (or so I was told). But everyone who wanted a mount got it.

I still find it very amusing that it’s now quite easy for certain classes to solo Molten Core. I wasn’t around when 40-man raiding was current, but every week when I march my DK into MC in his weekly futile quest for the Eye of Sulfuron, I just have to chuckle a little to myself at how pathetically easy it is. This was a 40 man raid, and I’m just stomping through it. Great for the ego!

Did ICC 10 yesterday for the first time since Cata, to get some people achievements. We had 10 raid geared level 85s, and that place just melted. The locks were bitching about the fact that there wasn’t even any point in putting DoTs up. :stuck_out_tongue:

Did it as a five man quite easily a few months ago. We probably could’ve four manned it, even. Three man with tactics is dicey–it all depends on who gets MC’d. Also, with that, we really needed the staff, too, because that stun from one of the council got to be super annoying. Once, all three of us got mind controlled, and the instance reset.

I want that damn phoenix…

Hey everyone, I’m back. Didja miss me and my dumb questions?;)

D and I took a little trip to Germany and Austria to see my family and friends in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, my uncle from East Germany, and the place where Ludwig Van Beethoven (The Maestro and my favorite composer) was born (Bonn) and lived the rest of his life (Vienna, Austria).

I had not been back home in three years and I thought it was high time.

I wore my “Alliance” t-shirt on the flight there and back, and my “Gilneas Howlers” one while there. Got a look from one lady as we ate at a sidewalk cafe, but other than that, no comments.

I’ll include some pictures as soon as D gets done loading them.

On the other, (my project for writing the dementia article), I have written the outline, the interview questions and will be taping several phone interviews before we leave Saturday for DC for the Alzheimer’s conference. While there, I plan to put the finishing touches on it and will have it done next week when we return.

Tanks

Q

Welcome back Quasi! Glad you had such a good trip.

Welcome back! I hope you liked Bonn, that’s where I live!

mkl12, you have a wonderful city, and we especially enjoyed our trip on the Rhein. Wish we could have met up with some other Bonnster WoW players, but we were only there 2 nights.

Thanks

Q

  1. When I tried to sign onto the game tonight, I got a message telling me that WoW cannot start unless I download Direct X 9.0, so I did that.

  2. When I try to turn Silka my gryph on the mini-map, she isn’t turning until I get off the map and into the real picture.

  3. Quest helper is sending me to the wrong location in “Giant Catfish”. Is anyone else having problems withe this?

Thanks

Q

Never mind, I finally got Silka to turn on the mini-map, and I found the new location for the gigantic catfish. I was used to it being in the lake.

So with Direct X 9.0 I should be fine.

Thanks anyway

Q

Welcome back Q it has been quiet here recently.

Very frustrating night for me, I queued for Tol Barad twice and didn’t get in either time while the rest of my guild all got in. Does anyone know how the queue works? It can’t be a first come first served thing as some guildies got in even though they logged on after I had joined the queue.

Got to say the return to the Horde after over a year on Alliance is making me very happy, Undercity and Org feel more like home than SW ever did.

It’s been my understanding that it’s a lottery. I’m not sure if it’s completely random or if there’s some special consideration for selection (like balancing the numbers of each class, for instance); it also tries to keep the Alliance:Horde numbers roughly equal.

“I feel it…and I can’t deny the fact that you like me! Right now! You like me!” - Sally Field, 1984 Oscar speech.

;):D:D:D:D;)

Thanks

Q

hey, everyone. Is there a list anywhere that correlates user name here with toon name there? Is it buried in these 185 pages of discussion?

In the Burning Dog Legion thread there is a list of dopers with their toons who are in the BDL, which is the doper guild on Cairne/Horde. I don’t think anyone has posted a comprehensive list for all the non-BDL players though. And even the one in the other thread is probably a little out of date.

Thanks, Skammer. I have a toon in BLD, although I am not there much.

I Burning Legion your dog!

So, can anyone explain the progression path for end-game type stuff to me? I’ve been googling and reading all sorts of stuff, some of which was probably out-dated, and have managed to completely confuse myself.

So, after about five months of very, very limited playtime, I finally managed to get my priest to level 85, exclusivly by questing. I then finished all the quests that I could find on wowhead that had useful gear rewards. Spent a bunch of time researching, then spent around 1K worth of gold on respecs, enchants, buckles, gems, and reforging, and I think I’ve got my toon as geared as she can get without running instances, or paying really, really, huge sums of gold. I just hit an average item level of 330, which would allow me to queue for heroics. Armory link is here, if anyone is interested.

I did group for the crucible quests in Twilight Highlands to get the blue 333 weapon, but other than that, I haven’t done any group type stuff since way back in the WotLK days. Even back then, I didn’t do very much at all, mostly just healing heroics with some RL friends. However, these days most of those friends have moved on for many different reasons, so I’m a bit lost. Ironically, I now have more time than I ever had in the past to play, so even without my old RL friends, I’d like to explore the endgame more with this expansion than I have had chances to in the past. But when I try to wrap my head around how to get raid-ready, my head starts spinning.

Now, from what I’ve found, there are blue 346 sets, which you pay justice points. You collect justice points by running instances, 30 per boss, plus 140 for the first regular 7 randoms you run each week. Heroics, so I’ve heard, are way harder than the ones I ran back in the lich king days. But they are worth it, since heroic bosses give you justice points and drop blue 346 gear, and your random heroics give you valor points, which you can use to get epic 359 gear.

So, if that’s right, (big if) and that the minimum of 346 blues in each slot is the absolute minimum for rading, you need to run a lot of instances to get raid ready. I’m guessing that the usual trend is to run regulars until your gear is good enough and you know the instances well enough that you graduate to heroics. Run a random of each every day, plus additional heroics for more boss dropped gear. Rinse, repeat until geared? And if that really is it, how long does it take to go from freshly dinged to raid ready?

And, just to confuse me even more, there are epics available for exalted reputation. It seems like each faction has one, and only one, epic piece of gear for my class anyways, plus the epic shoulder enchants from exalted Therazine rep. You can get your reputation up via daily quests, or by wearing a tabard while you are chain-running all those instances to get justice and valor points. There’s also some nice gear for honored reputation for a few factions, but I’ve bought all of that stuff already. I did the rep grind with the sons of hodir back in the day, and I recall it took 21 days of dailys to get up to exalted rep. Are these new ones around the same for the amount of time? And are they worth it, and which order should I hit them in?

Well, on preview that turned out to be longer than I thought, and I haven’t even got into how to find a raiding guild, or how different healing is in the new expansion, disc vs. holy healing, or any of the many other questions rattling around in my head. Better hit post now before my fingers get carried away again …

Pretty much my impression. It’s quite grindy.

And that’s an awesome question. I’ve never seen an analysis of a “minimum energy” path from 85 newb to raiding god. There are a lot of presuppositions to be decided, first: for instance, level up by instancing? you accumulate a lot of JPs before you can practically use them if you grind instances from your first random opportunity at level 80. If so, you can stipulate that you ding 85 with max JPs and immediately buy up a couple pieces of 346.

(I just realized that’s a non-applicable hypothetical in your case, since you dinged by questing. Still, in a general analysis or min-max exercise, it seems it would be the applicable strategy.)

Crafting? That can be a good shortcut to decent epics once you run heroics and get a chaos orb or two, or are very diligent about jewelcrafting dailies or skilling up alchemy. (The epic alchemist stone trinks are teh hawt.)

Gathering instead of crafting? You may have enough dosh to buy decent purpz off the AH the moment you get back to town after dinging.

By and large, I’ve gone for the rep epics. My main is exalted across the board except for Ramkahen, because I don’t instance enough and their dailies are absolutely anemic. As a hunter, not all factions have applicable epics; I think that’s why I saved Ramkahen for last. (No gear, just a camel. As much of a collector as I am, I still thought I should prioritize gear over bling.) YMMV.

As to order, I can’t really comment, not playing any healing class. (Even my priest is pure dps. Shadow all the way.)

@Mithrander.

The reputations priority for healing priests is like this:

Hyjal: This rep has not only the head arcanum, but a nice belt as well Cord of the Raven Queen - Item - World of Warcraft

Therazane: This rep has the shoulder enchant, but nothing of value for exalted. It does have a nice revered goodie Diamant's Ring of Temperance - Item - World of Warcraft

After these two mandatory ones, there’s two other factions with alright (non spirit) caster items.
*
These are the horde versions of items, but there are alliance counterparts that you can look up via wowhead.*

Dragonmaw: Yellow Smoke Pendant - Item - World of Warcraft

Earthen Ring: Flamebloom Gloves - Item - World of Warcraft

The usual progression path as of 4.1 is

Normals> Heroics> Troll Heroics (the slightly redesigned ZA & ZG implemented in 4.1)> Normal Raids > Heroic Raids

It depends on how long it takes to be “raid ready”. I’d say a minimum you want to be around a 350 ilevel. Don’t forget, if you’re loaded with gold you can buy some BoEs to pump your ilevel up, if you’re impatient with getting gear through heroics.

Darkmoon Card: Tsunami - Item - World of Warcraft , for example, is BiS (best in slot) until you get to heroic raids later on.

Blizzard also implemented a new looking for guild panel for 4.1 Guild Finder | WoWWiki | Fandom . It can be activated with /LFG , I believe.

In addition to that, I happen to play a holy disc priest as my main, World of Warcraft , so if you have any questions regarding healing etc. I can answer those too.

It goes way faster with a tabard - you can buy them from each faction quartermaster and wear them in dungeons like in Wrath.

Right now, your dailies grind should be in Tol Barad, because Baradin’s Wardens have totally awesome stuff and they don’t have a dungeon rep tabard.
