New WoW General Discussion Thread 6/8/10

gnoitall, the toon pulls out a map and reads it. Kinda cute IMO.

I still say my toon (the hunter Quasi) jumps back on his own. I tried it again last night: let him engage in combat and then let him fight completely on his own, and he does it himself.

The pet thing got explained yesterday. The toon was created before Cat and therefore had no pet. He’ll get it at level 10.

Thanks

It also happens when you’re reading your mail.

The map one is a little silly, but the mail one actually serves a purpose (not that anybody pays attention, mind you, but if they did, it would). How many times have you been standing at the mailbox reading your mail when somebody comes up and tries to open a trade window with you? Obviously this won’t stop the bozos, but it might stop your overexuberant guildie who just has to return that 100g you lent him last week RIGHT NOW!

So I finally ran into something that’s apparently notorious last night.

Doing 3v3 Arena, got into the Ogrimmar arena with all the moving platforms. We monkey-stomp the enemy team, it’s actually hilarious, but their healer dives at a platform at the last second and just outright disappears.

So, fire up youtube on the second monitor, turns out this is a known exploit in that arena–if you do just right, you can get inside the moving pillars.

So I open a ticket. Here’s the part where I just get angry–the GM responding says he’d LOVE to help, you see, but apparently there is a small, almost unnoticeable bug currently where if a GM teleports into an arena to look at the situation, it crashes that entire realm server.

At least we won. After 31 minutes, because that dude was the kind of dick who was perfectly happy to wait out the timer in the hopes we’d all quit out of a situation where we were winning 3-1 and hand him the points instead.

Maybe you are seeing a dodge? That looks like your character side-stepping the attack. When it happens can you still use your melee attack or have you “jumped” too far back?

I’m not sure, Jas09, I guess it could be considered a sidestep, but it’s strange that I’m just now noticing it to this degree, and again, no assistance from me whatsoever.
And it’s not an exagerrated motion, just something that made me go, “Hey! What’d he just do?”

He doesn’t have a sword yet, so could this be an action which is peculiar to a hunter using a staff, I wonder?

About your question: when he “jumps back” he goes right back and fights. He doesn’t stay back.

Thanks!

Q

ETA: My keys are not bound. I only use the mouse, if that makes a difference?

Is this your first Bloodelf? I think their dodging animation is a bit more spectacular than some of the other races. They have some pretty nifty special attack animations too, although as a hunter you won’t be seeing them very much.

And… my main (Wolkie) does NOT do this. I watched when Rik and I played last night.

Cue the “Twilight Zone” theme, or am I finally losing it all the way?

Q
hdc_bst: I have played a Belf before, but it has been a couple of years ago.

It may very well be the difference between Human and Belf animations. Belfs are over-the-top and swashbuckly, and their combat animations reflect that.

Yep. All my toons are male blood elves so I’m used to it, but they do have some pretty wild animations. If I’m remembering correctly, one of them causes them to reel back when hit and do that “land on all fours like a crab and then leap back to their feet” martial arts move that you see in every martial arts movie ever. Could that be what you’re seeing?

The Disengage thing I was talking about yesterday is very obvious. Your toon leaps backward like 20 feet. It’s a way to get you out of melee range, since hunters don’t like to melee.

I’ll pay closer attention next time, info, but I don’t think I have seen him on all fours yet.

Also I don’t think I know how to disengage. What button does one use, or is that a learned ability? He doesn’t jump 20 feet though, when he does it himself.

Thanks

Q

I’m pretty sure that you wouldn’t even have learned Disengage yet, at >lvl 10. I’m pretty sure it’s at least a teens level ability.

Yeah, I don’t think I explained it very well. You know how in a martial arts movie when somebody gets knocked back so hard they land flat on their back, and then they use their arms and legs to kind of arch up and jump back to their feet? I’m pretty sure that’s one of the blood elf male combat animations. Can’t be positive, though–I honestly don’t pay that much attention to it.

It’s a learned ability, and you wouldn’t have it yet. I believe you get your next abilities at level 10 (I noticed this yesterday when I was looking to see if you should have Revive Pet and Call Pet yet), and that one comes later on.

I am in shock! I was on my nelf going to do the achievement for Pilgrim’s Bounty where you need to eat at all the opposite faction capitals, and when I got to Org I expected to be ganked right away, but the Horde had left an entire table for Alliance! It was me, a draenei and a gnome at one table while Hordies ate at the others. Nice to know the spirit of Warchief Thrall is still around.

Also, guild downed Halfus yesterday! It’s our first Cata raid boss kill.

I know just the move you’re describing - it’s called a “kip up.”

Jaejae (my Alliance main on Alexstrazsa) got Stood In The Fire last night! I was questing Western Plaguelands and killing kobolds/gathering firewood on that hill below the lumber camp, when everything went red. I thought something had happened to my video card at first, then realized my UI was still the normal color. So I climbed up to the top of that little pile of rocks in the middle of the hill and watched the skies, and here came Deathwing! That was impressive. He set a swath of the zone on fire down the hill so I summoned my charger and went for broke. Didn’t kill me, but I still got the achievement.

Pilgrim’s bounty already? Time to power level my shammy’s cooking I guess.

So anyone else working on collecting some gear for Transmogrification? I started putting in a little time this weekend. I headed into the The Eye, and Serpent Shrine Cavern to pick up some of the Druid Tier 5 gear. I was pretty lucky and snagged the Leg, Chest, and Shoulder tokens. And also got some cool non-tier gloves from trash in the Eye that i like better than the tier gloves. Now, i just need/want the helm from the last boss in Karazhan (i soled up to the chess event, but i’ll need some budies to help me get past that as soloing it seems pretty near impossible).

So now i just need a weapon & cloak. For the weapon i really like the Ranseur of Hatred if i’m ever lucky enough to see it drop (its not even on the AH anymore), but if not i’m currently trying to farm a staff from the last boss in Heroic Auch Crypts. Theres also a really cool druid staff from Mount Hyjal BC raid, but i learned the hard way that i can’t solo the first boss in there so i’ll need to pull together some pals to help me clear the place.

I would love to hear what other people are collecting in anticipation of Transmog!

I’m fortunate that I don’t really need to collect: I saved all my Frost Witch stuff from Wrath, including a pair of Frost Giant Cleavers, and that’s bar none the coolest enhancement shammie set one can put on, IMHO.

On the other hand, I might see if I can find some better looking weapons, but it’s hard to beat the awesome of either the cleavers or Ruthless-season PvP claws.

There’s a pretty awesome Druid staff that you can get from the level 20-ish quest from a questgiver in Moonglade; requires you to go kill & loot stuff in the 20-ish dungeons (shadowfang et al).
