New WoW General Discussion Thread 6/8/10

Well, it wasn’t just the slap, was it? Messing with my line three times after being asked politely to stop, is mean-spirited, up with which I will not put.

Kid OR adult.

But, well, fuck it then :). I guess the GM thought I was being overdramatic with his comment at the end of his spiel, that if I saw any thrown snowballs I should run. I’m batshit, but I can still recognize sarcasm. Hence the note, just to show I didn’t miss it.

And yeah, I know you guys think I’m being “over-sensitive”, but that game is just as important to me as y’all are: both are a major part of my day, and you know I play the game as it were real life, so the ignoring of my requests to stop interfering with my fishing and then the slap when she found out I’d reported her, were taken seriously by me.

Q

Well, I guess I was wrong about her being a Mage. But I didn’t notice a cast, a bobber, and there was no explanation on her part that we were in the same swarm. And there should have been if I turned in a report on her. It would be for me, anyway. And had she spoken up, I woul’d have apologized profusely and made it right.

I once accidentally stole a guy’s skin, and he called me on it. Apologized and then sent him 10 for the one I took.

And yes, that’s the person, because I remember “The patient” as being her (his?) title and wondering why it wasn’t “The shitty-mannered”

Q

You’re a decent human being. Frankly, in my jaded opinion, that puts you in the extreme minority.

There are no in-game mechanics preventing “competitive” fishing of a pool, short of actual PvP (if opposite faction and flagged) or friendly interrupts, and those are interrupts to you too, since you have to cast them.

As to the etiquette of fishing, yah, it’s bad form to poach on someone else’s pool, but “since the rules allow it, it’s obviously not wrong.”

Yeah. For a lot of people, it’s not what’s good, bad, right, wrong, nice, or naughty; it’s just what you can get away with.

After all of that… there is also no way that someone else fishing in the same fishing pool as you can interfere with your bobbers and casts. There’s no in-game mechanism for “tangling lines”. The only thing I can see happening is that your competition landed the last fish of the pool before you did, so the pool despawned before you could set the hook (the bobber bobbing). Since at that moment, there was no pool, you landed junk instead of a fish. (It doesn’t matter when you cast; it’s whether there’s a pool under your bobber when you reel in.)

I note that Tangled Fishing Line is a typical piece of vendor trash you land if you fish open water (outside of a pool) that’s above your current fishing skill.

So, my theory… worthless speculation, really, but nonetheless… is that Calamityred was fishing the same pools as you, making them despawn sooner and making some of your casts “open water” rather than pool fishing.

Annoying, especially if done with enough persistence to qualify as same-team griefing… I dunno if it’d be actionable on the part of the GMs, though.

And of course, I can be completely wrong.

It’s a moot point now anyway, gnoitall since Rik has all the fathom eels he needs, and I like to go after that ship debris stuff. Tonight was schweet, because for the whole night I scored ten of those crates with a whole lot of highly sellable stuff inside. That’s a record for me.

Still languishing in the bank are 8 lockboxes requiring a Rogue lockpick graded level 425 at the highest. Those guys are hard to find, aren’t they?

Bit of not so good news is we had to admit Dondra back into the hospital today due to her pulmonary hypertension playing hell with her body, causing massive swelling in the legs. Good news about THAT, though, is our son is here with us, and he and I are doing shifts and I have the night shift. We’re hoping that since there isn’t a lot of diagnostic work to be done (did all that the last admission) her stay will be short.

Send some good vibes, if you would, please?

Thanks!

Quasi

Sorry, guys I think I went into a mini fugue there last (been losing sleep). The first part I knew I wasa in the WoW thread. Then nodded off and started writing as if I was in mundane. didn’t notice till just a little while ago,
FArg

Q

No problem Q, we’re all pulling for you and Dondra.

Don’t forget, blacksmiths can unlock these with skeleton keys as well (at approximately the same skill level, granted.)

And engineers with Volatile Seaforium Blastpacks can “lockpick” (goblin-style) up to 525, so that’s equivalent to a max-level rogue and enough for Elementium Lockboxes.

HA! Didn’t know I could do that! I did try to bow to Rik last evening and struck the chicken noise instead, which embarrased me because it was supposed to be a response to his “Hail to the Knight!”:D:eek: Luckily he wasn’t offended and is very patient - as are jayjay and all the rest of you guys.

So can you make that voice say anything and everything or only pre-programmed stuff?

And is this how it went:

  1. Target Wolkie
  2. Type in /greet into chat
  3. Hear “Hail to the Knight!” ?

Thanks for the info on the Rogues, Blacksmiths and Engineers for my lockpicking. Just to make sure I don’t embarrass myself if I do find someone to lockpick, can someone check me out on the procedure:

  1. Target the guy
  2. Click the trade option
  3. Enter a lockbox (or all of them?). On which side - not sure
  4. Click “Will not be traded”
  5. Let him do his thing

To pay him:

  1. Target him
  2. Click Trade
  3. Click inside gold box
  4. Type in amount
  5. Hit Trade button

Say thanks.

So is all that right? Those lockboxes have been there about 2 years, so it’s been that long since I’ve done anything like that.

Thanks for the get-well wishes for Dondra!

We’ve gotten to the point where, unless we just have to, we don’t bother family with doing anything for us if we can help it. I’m sure y’all know how that goes, right?

“Now if you need us to drive you to get groceries, or need anything at all, just call, okay?”

“Well, we don’t like to…”

Anything, Bill, at any time, ya hear???”

“Okay, thanks very much!”

So you try not to need anything, but now you do need something, and you call to see if they can go to the house, go inside and pick up some nighties and some shampoo, etc.

Brief pause on the other end and then,

“How bad does she need those items today, Bill?”

So if we know she may be admitted, we pack everything she and I could possibly need, and then on the way to the doc’s, we stop at the store and buy whatever things I might like to eat or drink (she’s usually on a cardiac or renal diet) and we’re all set and don’t need to bother either one of our families.

But you know who does respond with phone calls, well-wishes here on The Dope, flowers, cards and teddy bears?

Y’all do, and we love you for it! We took along the teddy bear “DeeCee” which Mama Zappa and TypoKnig sent her last year and it’s in the bed with her;). We took a picture with the cell at that time, but neither one of us could figure out how to get from cell to computer, so I’ll take another picture with just the camera this time and share with y’all.

So, guildies, I’ll have a little while at about 5-6pm ET to be on WoW (MY shift with D doesn’t begin till 10).

Thanks!

Bill

AH question for y’all.

I use Elixir of Water Walking quite frequently, but apparently so do a lot of other folks, because the AH is out of them sometimes.

Is there a way to configure either the House or Auctioneer to let me know in-game when some come available?

Thanks

Q

Actually, the emote I’m using is /cheer, and what you’re hearing is “Hail to the night!” (not “knight”). Cuz Nouveus is a night elf, and worships the moon goddess Elune. Though I find it odd that you’re hearing that; when somebody cheers me, I don’t hear anything. I just see their cheer animation and the words “<playername> cheers at you!” Same with any emote that includes a sound - I hear my own, but not anybody else’s (except, unfortunately, everybody’s /train emote noise when somebody drops one of those Train Sets in the AH…). I must have a checkbox unchecked somewhere…

Those elixirs are kind of a pain. The only easy way to get them is in the bags from fishing dailies.

The alternative is get them from an alchemist. The problem is, the recipe for making the elixir isn’t learned from an alchemy trainer or found in a random drop from a mob. Instead, higher-level alchemists have an ability called “Northrend Alchemy Research”, where they combine some Northrend herbs to create some random potion or elixir, and in the process they might accidentally “discover” how to make something else. And one of those recipes they might “discover” is the Elixir of Water Walking. So as a result, not every alchemist is going to know the recipe, especially if they quickly “power-leveled” the Alchemy profession and haven’t done much, if any, Northrend Alchemy Research.

And if they do know how to make it, it’s still a pain. First they have to to make Ethereal Oil, which takes 2 Glassfin Minnows, a fish that can only be caught from pools in that river and pond below Dalaran. Then it takes 3 Ethereal Oils + 1 Crystal Vial to make an Elixir of Water Walking. So basically, you’re looking at 120 of those fish to make one stack of 20 elixirs. And of course, you can only get 3-5 fish out of a pool. Needless to say, most people don’t want to spend that much time fishing just to make this one elixir, so it ends up being pretty hard to find :frowning:

I kinda like when you say that, Rik, because even though the words are different they sound the same.

So it’s a shame that you can’t “set up” the elixir by using, like, a back-order function, and you’d know when some came in and if it then sold again because you might not have an AH where you are and couldn’t get back quick enough.

Maybe I could get a particular seller to message me?

Q

And yet, I remember a time not so long ago when I was overflowing with stacks of those things, because the Northrend fishing daily reward always seemed to include one of them.

OTOH, I am obsessively completionist, so even after dinging max-level alch skill, I did Northrend Alchemy Research until I had checked off every possible recipe. (The nice thing is that those types of researches will never give you “repeats” and will always give you something if there’s anything left to learn. Unlike archaeology and repeat common artifacts.)

So it’s possible to find alchemists who can do on-demand creation of most commonly-knowable recipes. Some of them may not be bloodthirsty profiteers, too.

Yeah. Having to fish up so much is a mild pain, but in my case, I can “write it off” because I’m still working on my guild’s progress on the “catch 10000 things from pools” achievement. My problem is that I don’t think the pools reliably respawn fast enough in that river to sustain continuous fishing, even with just me fishing them, so I probably can’t grind out a full stack’s worth of fish in one sitting. Maybe while on Heroics queue.

One thing you might try is your realm forums. You’re on Alexstrasza, right? Here’s the URL for your realm forum: World of Warcraft
Just create a new thread and say something like, “Buying Elixir of Water Walking in bulk, offering (whatever you’re offering). COD to Wolkenlaufre.”

If anybody bites, they’ll send you elixirs in your in-game mail. If you look at the bottom of the mail, it’ll say how much you’ll have to pay to take them out. If you agree with the price (and have verified that the item being sent is the one you want), just click to take the item and you’ll automatically send that much money to the seller. If you don’t agree with the price (or you’ve gotten too many people sending them to you and don’t want any more) just click “Return” at the bottom of the mail and it’ll send the item back to the seller without your having to pay anything.

Don’t forget to update the thread when you’ve gotten enough.

You can also advertise in Trade, of course. That might be easier, but the other way means people can send them to you even when you’re not around.

Oh god, yes. Since by the end of Wrath I had three 80s on my main server (Lightbringer), I had a crapton of those things in my guild bank. I only recently depleted my backstock.

Nice thing I discovered is that my priest (who just dinged 81 herself) can fish while Levitating. So she can just scoot up and down that river fishing up the minnows

(And I really do like the new “floating along” Levitate animation!)

Infovore!!! :):)

What a great idea! That’s what I just now got done doing.

This looks like a “jerkless” forum too!

Rik: “crapton”?

I know of an Elic Crapton. Any relation, do you think?

Thanks, guys!!!

Q

Crapton is dog, man.

Here is a list of emotes for Quasi and for others like me who like all the emotey goodness.

There’s a few in there I don’t remember and I’m going to have to go try out.

Some Wikipedia vandals got “Crapton” inserted into a list of historical nicknames for Stockton, California. It got picked up by the San Joaquin County Historical Society as part of their description of their collection of the city’s historical records.

On one hand, this illustrates the dangers of doing historical research using Wikipedia as a primary source. On the other hand, I’ve been to Stockton, and find the interpolation credible. If “Crapton” wasn’t a historical nickname for Stockton, it should have been.
