Okay, Rik, I printed this out and will continue the little PvP quests in Grizz Hills as well as the TB Battleground.
Also, there are quite a few races with whom I’m not exalted, such as Mt. Hyjal, etc. I guess I should work on those as well, yes?
IIRC, the “epic” designation allows me to buy a new mount and /or equipment? Can you just confirm this?
About the fishing tournament: I particpated today from Moak Bi harbor (Guess I should have stayed inland at Grizz Hills), and I got confused (“awwww, really, Quasi?”): I know I’m supposed to be where I can catch pygmy suckers, but am I supposed to look for a “swarm” of them using fishing buddy and fish there, or can I fish somewhere where the swarm is, say, “Borean Man of War” and just wait for a pygmy to come along?
Today I kept pulling up the Man of Wars’ and no Pygmys, and I was wondering if I just wasn’t patient enough. The tourney was only less than 10 min long anyway.
No, you’re thinking of “Exalted” reputation. Those “Epic” achievements you got are just achievements. They just mean you equipped “epic” (purple) items of a certain iLvl in every slot.
I think I only ever tried the Saturday fishing tournament once, so I may not recall correctly. But remember that the Pygmy Suckerfish are always “attached” to other fish (they’re suckers, after all). So you never catch them by themselves - they always come up along with your “real” catch. And I honestly think they can be found in any pool/school/swarm in Northrend. But remember it’s a shark you’re looking for, not the suckerfish. The shark just hangs out in the same places, so that’s why they tell you to fish there.
Anytime you do something that flags you for PvP (like doing the Tol Barad battle, or doing those Grizzly Hills quests), you’ll stay flagged for 5 minutes after you’re done. If you hearth, or go through a portal while you’re flagged, the 5-minute timer will get reset back to 5 minutes. So if you, say, finished your Grizzly Hills quests and then hearthed back to SW, your PvP flag would get set back to 5 minutes. Then if you went through the portal to Tol Barad to fish there, it would get reset again.
Now, having your timer reset in Stormwind wouldn’t normally be a big deal, but if you hearth back in the middle of a (nowadays rare) Horde PvP raid on the city, you’d be a valid target, so bear that in mind.
I hate to admit it, as much as I profess to disliking PvP, I actually miss the furious tempo of raid and counter-raid back in Wrath, what with the (then new) city raid achievement for the PvP bear mount. If the lore says there’s a war on, then raids on each sides’ capitals should happen once in a while.
And I could definitely reconcile my anti-ganking mindset with city raiding with the understanding that (A) the primary target is NPCs (faction leaders), and (B) any player I can attack probably voluntarily flagged themselves. If they are “accidentally” flagged for the purposes of the raid, all they have to do is take cover and cower someplace far away from the actual city raid target. If they rush out to stop us, fair game. War is war.
In my mind, that’s what world PvP is supposed to be like.
I don’t remember the sequence of events, but I had travelled UP the river, stopping at every swarm, and going on around to the Wellson shipwreck, checked that there were no more yellow dots and then started back the other way, stopping and fishing again at the location where you have first opportunity to leave the river and head toward the shipyard entrance. I would think, that having stopped at least 4 times to fish would have eaten up 5 minutes easy.
I DID enter the battleground under Alliance control shortly before that, to do The Leftovers and Crocolisk skins, but again, from the time I left the TB grounds until I got zapped was way more than 5 minutes. It was a guy on a motorbike who killed me.
Same thing just now 3:25 am, on the river in TB peninsula, minding my own business fishing when I was attacked by an “Ambassador Viron”, a Horde Rogue. I had not been through any portals in the last 5 minutes. I didn’t time it, but it was longer than 10, because I again stopped at every marked swarm, and watched the 10 minute timer wind down 2 times and I was attacked at the closest point you can enter the river near the camp with 2 minutes left to go unless I renewed my water walking elixir.
I’d make a ticket, but they’d just tell me they aren’t allowed to comment on the game. Right?
Hi Q as I understand it you will be flagged for PvP if the battle is going on whether you are participating in the battle or not. So even if you are just questing or fishing in the Peninsula you will be flagged as soon as the battle in TB proper starts.
Also it takes 5 minutes for your PvP flag to drop off so you will not be clear of it for 5 minutes after the battle ends.
Ah-HA! There it is. As I was fishing, I noticed the time getting nearer to the battle. When I looked again it read “Alliance is attacking” and shortly thereafter was when he hit me. I also noticed that very shortly before the hit, another player (possibly this guy) approached my fishing spot, ducked underneath the water and when I got close to the debris, he attacked.
Here’s another question for you, martu: what was he doing off the battleground. I was on the peninsula. It seems like if I wanted to avoid this happening again, I should hearth out of there asap before battle-time?
There’s a fishing daily in Wintergrasp, and if I don’t check the clock, I’m likely, if I’m in their area, to get asked if I want to join the battle or cancel? If I cancel, the game will just transport me to somewhere away from my quest area, but away from the battle. Did I get asked that same question in the TB Pen and just missed it?
So the moral of the story? Look at the clock and if it’s close to battle time and my faction (Alliance) is not in control, get the hell out to avoid attack and death?
I hope that’s it, but if not, I’m close. “I can feel it…“Dave”…I … can… feel it”. In all seriousness, thanks for the help, martu.
You’re close, Quasi, but you’ll be flagged whether your faction is in control or not. Everyone in the zone gets flagged, Alliance or Horde, when a battle starts. And the whole zone is the battleground, so it doesn’t matter if you’re actually in the middle of the area where most of the objectives are or not.
There could be a few of reasons he was off the battleground:
[ol]
[li]He queued up for the battle but didn’t get in - there is a player limit[/li][li]He got kicked from the battle - AFK or DC maybe[/li][li]He does this on purpose to kill opposition players[/li][/ol]
To avoid this yes hearth out of TB before the battle starts, you will get a warning in plenty of time.
No way to test it since my sub is cancelled, but I do think there are some “glitches” in Tol Barad and Tol Barad Peninsula. Technically, if you’re in TB Peninsula, you shouldn’t get auto-flagged when the battle starts over on the other side. The Peninsula isn’t considered part of the BG/PvP zone.
I think I know what might be happening here, though. Quasi, are you still using Water Walking Elixirs for fishing in TB? I’m going to hazard a guess that you may have stepped over the invisible border between the Peninsula and the battleground side. This invisible line is probably in the middle of the water between the two areas. Look at a USA map and find two states that are separated by a river - you’ll notice the state line goes right down the middle of the river. Same thing in TB - If you were water walking and stepped across that line, you’d get flagged.
You play with your character name visible to you, right? Your name normally looks blue to you, but if you get flagged for PvP, your name will turn green. So if you notice your name has turned green, jump on Silka and head back to the Alliance camp and wait for your name to turn blue again.

This is exactly what is happening, Rik, and I have often wondered why the green instead of the blue, but never asked. I’ll start paying attention from now on, but is it possible that my name might be green even if I’m in SW?
Yes, I do use water walking every time I fish unless I can reach the swarm from a bank. The line seems to be when I am closest to the camp.
Quasi, I would avoid that like the plague and don’t click on the link. If you’ve quoted it exactly as it was in the email, I can almost guarantee it’s a fake. Blizzard doesn’t use awkward grammar like “You can log Web site application, we will be lucky players randomly.”
Yes - any time you’re flagged, you’ll see your name in green, and so will other friendly players so that they’ll know you’re flagged. The other people need to know, because if they’re not flagged and they cast a heal or a buff on you, they’ll get flagged too.
That got me in trouble several times while playing my paladin, because I always played with my own name and all friendly player names turned off. I hate the clutter of seeing a hundred names all over my screen, and it was also a handy way to instantly tell if somebody was of the opposite faction, even at a distance - if I could see their name at all, even if it was blue, they were “the enemy”. But anyway, since I played with all friendly names “off”, I occasionally cast a buff or heal on a flagged player without realizing it, and got myself flagged for my trouble.
