This seems … crazy. I’m wondering if Cuomo is drunk, high, insane, or some combination of the three.
On the upside, I would pay cold hard cash to watch Antifa’s navy square off against a bunch of oil workers / Coast Guard / the US Navy. Whale Wars 2.0 would have at least one avid fan (me).
I read both of your cites, neither said shit about antifa. Those guys sure have your goat, huh? Anyway, from the first cite:
“The Trump administration policy, which would open 90 percent of U.S. offshore oil reserves to private development, has attracted bipartisan opposition from most of the governors of the 22 coastal states it would affect.”
Some more passionately and outside the boxy I guess.
Yes, “Antifa’s navy” was a joke (as was “letters of marque”). The goal would appear to be to use lawlessness / violence / destruction to disrupt legal activities they disagree with, so it seems to be in line with Antifa’s typical M.O.
As an avid sport fisherman and boater, I am behind this 100%. I am fucking sick and tired of having the environment fucked up by polluters who have no regard for nature, no regard for the beauty of the ocean or lakes, no regard for fishing, no regard for health, no regard for anything. We have enough goddamn oil drilling rigs in this country already. Private corporations should absolutely not be allowed to rape the environment that was here before us and will be here when we’re gone (unless we destroy it first.)
Civil disobedience and interference with the oil operations is not the same as an act of war, and although I absolutely do not condone any violence against the personnel of either the oil rigs or any government vessels that are sent in to protect them, I do condone civil disobedience.
Mario Savio, who was a 60s radical (and I am most certainly not a 60s-style radical and I am avowedly anti-Communist), said that “there’s a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious, makes you so sick at heart, that you can’t take part! You can’t even passively take part! And you’ve got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels…upon the levers, upon all the apparatus, and you’ve got to make it stop!” And I agree with that wholeheartedly when it comes to protecting the environment.
What do you imagine Cuomo’s “citizen fleet” might do to “interfere”? Do you think those activities are likely to be lawful, non-violent, and not destructive?
I’d actually love to find a transcript / video of exactly what he said, but I haven’t been able to locate it yet.
Go for it. It’ll probably get you killed, and laughed at, but if you feel passionately about it, you should totally do it. One small request: please take a GoPro and livestream it, for the rest of us.
Do you think “just get in the way of the ships” is likely to be a lawful maritime activity? Do you think it has potential to be destructive? Do you remember when the Sea Shepherds tried that? This was the result.
Unfortunately, the risk may not entirely be on the protesters. The protesters could put others in danger as well. The ocean is a dangerous enough place already, and it gets more dangerous when fuckheads decide to try to play dangerous games with people who are going about their business on it.
Sure (“it’s the economy, stupid”), I’m enjoying the stock market rise, GDP growth, and low unemployment. About my only complaint currently would be the high gas prices, but hey, maybe this will help that.
Or (and this seems to be the direction we’re going) we could keep drilling offshore.
Of course I can’t “guarantee” it. However, given that all the previous spills have not exactly amounted to the death of the planet, I think we’ll get over it if it does happen.
What stock market rise? It’s been fluttering around 24,000 since late Jan. Unemployment has been stagnant for quite a while.
looks like the GDP is not growing like it was. This looks like it did some growing during the Obama years.(10Y setting) You didn’t enjoy that?
I think you should volunteer your property for drilling or a coal mine or such. Put your own things at risk.
