I live in DC. The President or Vice President interrupts my travel fairly often, those violent bastards.
And before the Trump apologists drop in with lame defenses of their assaults on me, just remember the fundamental power of government: the monopoly on the legal use of violence. That’s what those motorcades are.
blockades are not interruptions. They’re denial of service. If a road gets shut down for security reasons it’s posted in advance so you can navigate around it.
That you don’t understand this makes it difficult to discuss anything at this point. You clearly think it’s OK if you block a boat from legally docking because you don’t like it.
Please, whatever you need to do to explain whether you think civil disobedience is actually violent protest. I remain unclear if you’re perpetrating some silly joke, or if you are serious.
It’s hard to understand things that aren’t true. Can’t speak for other places, but you’d apparently be surprised how routinely it happens in the DC area that the first notification you have that a route is blocked due to a parade or a notable’s motorcade is when you encounter the barricades or the motorcycle cops.
Every last bit of extractable fossil fuel is going to be extracted and burned, by us or someone else. If the last petroleum reserves on the planet were off the Florida coast, oil rigs will appear and drill.
The question is, what are we going to do to make the best use of fossil fuels while we still have them?
No (that’s just plain old NIMBYism), but it is crazy to call for a “citizen fleet” to sail out to the rigs and “block” or “interfere” with their activities.
Sure. Both Cuomo and Scott (and virtually every other coastal governor) are showcasing NIMBY attitudes when they oppose oil drilling off the coast of their states.
ETA: there’s only one that I know of that’s calling for people to go out in boats and “block” or “interfere” with oil drilling though.
I’ve never really taken the time to unpack all of my motivations for focusing most of my ire on Bears Ears and not Gold Butte. Thinking about it now, I suspect it was mostly because Bears Ears was more than a million acres larger than Gold Butte, but there was probably at least some small component of my feelings that was driven by my proximity to the area (although I’m probably about equidistance from Bears Ears and Gold Butte), my visits there, and knowing nearby residents that felt significantly impacted by the declaration.
I’m sure Scott is for drilling other places, but a cite that Cuomo is for drilling off the California coast, say? If you oppose something everywhere, it isn’t NIMBYism.
