Newbie FAQ...Veteran Posters Wanted

never did believe in the ol’ saying, no question’s a stupid question, but here goes. how the hell does this posting stuff work? it’s obviously not like a :::shudder::: chat room in that it’s an immediate reply kind of thing. is there some kind of refresh button that i’m missing? i started to expand on my question but have decided that i may be tipping the idiot scale already.

please be kind.

Well, I’m not nice enough to explain the whole thing, but if you hit the refresh button in a forum - where you see the names of all the threads - you’ll see the order change. The most recent post will be at the end of the thread at the top of the list.

ok. perhaps i was a little too newbie-esque. i get the whole refresh thing, etc., and wasn’t soliciting a course in computers. i just can’t seem to find the refresh thing anywhere on my screen in this site. believe me, i’ve looked.

if any other newbies want to make jerks out of themselves by asking dumb questions, please do…

LOL. I don’t think there is a refresh mechanism on the boards themselves. When I come here with IE at work, it refreshes whenever I change forums. At home with Netscape, it doesn’t refresh unless I use the refresh button.

Being as kind as I can, first off, this question belongs in ATMB aka “About the Message Board”. Hey I am not the board police but I calls them as I sees them.

Second, use the cute little refresh button on your browser. There is no refresh button on the boards themselves.

Please take a tour of the forums so as not to irk the moderators. Learn what is appropriate for each forum and you will be on your way to posting like a madman. Trust me we have a few of those around here.

The go button to the right of the forum jump menu option will also refresh for you.

On most systems, you can press F5 to refresh the browser. The best bet, though is not to bother. The pace is a lot slower here, sometimes painfully slow compared to active boards or chat rooms.

And if you ask a serious question in the General Questions forum you may not get an answer in a day.

So just keep posting and check the thread list now and then.
When your name is not on the “last poster” column, there is a new answer.

Most “refresh” buttons use an arrow of some sort to identify themselves: The (older) version of Netscape I use has a big blue arrrow “folded over” itself so that it looks as though the arrow started up, them reversed itself and headed down; the Internet Explorer refresh button looks like a document (note the folded corner of “paper”) with two arrows, each curved to point at the end of the other; the AOL (forgive me) button is an arrow describing a circle to go back to its origin; (it’s been a while since I’ve seen it, but) the MicroSoft Network refresh button was also a curved arrow.

For several browsers, the F5 key can be used as
refresh."

In addition, holding the Ctrl key while pressing the Refresh button instructs the browser to go back to the server and find the current page, (whereas pressing Refresh without the Ctrl key simply says find the last page sent rather than using the page in your cache).

Fonz, you don’t post much in MPSIMS do you?

If I read a thread and come out, the board has been refreshed. If I post a message and come out, the board has been refreshed.

Going from forum to forum without opening a thread does not refresh my page. Oh, and I have Explorer with a plain old modem connection.

Refreshing can also be done by holding down the ctrl button and pressing r.

I do a hard refresh by using shift-reload in netscape. Just selecting ‘reload’ wont do a full reload.

Netscape reloads each time you visit a page because in the PREFERENCE menu you selected for it to do that. I selected to refresh only ‘once’.

didn’t check this because initial post/new thread had me feeling like i was missing the Big Refresh Button (complete with red and white spiraled target art) and was busy holding my head in shame. thank you guys very much for being kind. : ) i’d do a real smiley if i could figure that out…

also, thanks for the ‘it belongs in message board questions’ (i’d quote exactly if i could figure that out, too). i’ll peruse the suggested boards and promise to be a more responsible poster in the future. please insert another smiley.
