Newbie wants to join with money order

I’ve been lurking for a while now and started my 30 day free trial the other day.I don’t do credit cards and was wondering if someone out there would accept a money order from me and sign me up. I am in Canada and would do the conversion to US funds plus time and effort, gas, etc. as well as my appreciation. If there is some established way of doing this, you could also make me aware of this as well. I checked some threads at the time of the change to a paid board but they were all dated 2000 and I suspect may not be relevant now.

Anyway, your input would be appreciated.

More of a question for the ATMB crowd.

Off it goes.

A couple of threads away on ATMB, there’s a thread for people looking for others who can help them with paying for their subscription fees. You might want to see if anybody there would be willing to help out.

Hello, gommsn: glad you’ve decided to join up. There’s a Pit thread waiting, all warm and cosy, with your name written all over it. I’ll teach you to be polite in my hijacks of your threads.

gommsn: you don’t have a family member, neighbour, friend etc with a credit card who’d be willing to pay the fee? It would be much easier that way.

If I can DO that, no problem. I thought the CC number and the name of the person joining should match. If not, thanks you’ve answered my question.

Actually I thought there would be some Canuk Dopers who would step up to the plate but…Oh well.

According to whatCunctator says, I’ll be seeing you soon. I was reading back in the archives the last couple of days(the Pit). I’m not so sure how quickly I’ll be jumping in there with anything too sensitive. Some of those people come right unhinged. I suppose everyone will find out sooner or later that I am a retired Psych nurse and it really is interesting to see people lose it in the written form as opposed to real life. Its not as though i’m not used to dealing with difficult situations(in fact my colleagues tell me I’m quite good) but I prefer to do it face to face. The written word is something I’ve always respected but it can be very cold and insensetive when emotions start to run high. I think you need to be very adept at reading between the lines and keep your mind open.

Now I’m off to think up a new name. GOMMSN is lame and goes back to the time I first got my computer. I’ll put my artistic hat on and see what describes me better.
See you later

Ignorance can be cured....................Stupidity is terminal!

I’m not the techie, someone else can correct me if I’ve got it wrong, but my understanding is: To have someone else pay for your subscription, you will have to give them your password, let them sign under your username, and then register and pay with their credit card, and sign out. After that, you should change your password.

Yeah CK , Now that I understand better, I’ll just get my SO to cover it. I just assumed there would be a problem with one person registering and another persons CC being used to pay for it.

The only way anyone associated with the SDMB would find out your real name would be via your credit card. They can’t exactly compare it to your screen name to make sure it matches. At least, I presume that gommsn isn’t your real name.

And the Board went pay less than a year ago, in March/April 2004. I’m not sure what threads you were looking at from 2000.

I stand corrected! I was looking at “Join Dates” as opposed to “Post Dates”. However, if my CC name cannot be associated with my screen name, how does anyone know who’s paying for what? Am I explaining this coherently? I’m not concerned so much with the privacy aspect as with the accountant knowing I,m not some cretin using a stolen CC. Thats why I expected some correlation between GOMMSN and the CC.

Yeah, might be an idea to hang aroung some of the “softer” forums until you get a feel for the place - Cafe Society, IMHO and MPSIMS: GD and GQ are very keen on politeness, and are very good if you have something to contribute. Each forum has its own quirks, which you’ll soon figure out.

I’m not sure how “unhinged” the Pit it is - it’s well moderated, and isn’t quite as Wild West as it may seem at first glance - there is {usually} method to the madness, and it can be fun, but it does take a while to get used to the atmosphere down there. Anyway, you’ll soon find the forums you fit in.

Remember, the only way to get a new name is to email an administrator to get them to change it for you. One change per customer, so make it good. Do not, (DO NOT) sign up as a paid member with a new name. You will be banned, and I sure don’t want to see you go.

Wow! Good to know- Good to know! Thanx for the heads-up Film Geek .Glad somebody mentioned that. Guess I’m stuck with my Grumpy Old Man monniker. I’m intrigued by your user name. I guess I could be considered a bit of a filmgeek too. I’m especially fond of the older movies, particularily film noir and the older musicals. There’s a daily double for you!. Maybe when I get going we’ll have something to talk about.

Case Sensitive , Don’t worry, I have no suicidal tendecies. I don’t intend to sacrifice myself just yet. I must admit however, it is a very interesting forum.

This thread seems to have become MPSIMS rather than “About this Message Board” and so is being moved appropriately…

C.K. Wow! I never became mundane and pointless so fast in my life! I’ll learn, I’ll learn.

So I'm not the only newbie being bounced to the mundane side of life, Good luck

gommsn :smack:

Don’t take it too hard: “Mundane and Pointless” is a bit of a misnomer - you get hatched, matched and dispatched notices in here too. All human existence is contained herein, especially in threads marked TMI.
