Now I find he was shot by some guy on the ground!

I read The Red Baron’s Last Flight: A Mystery Investigated soon after it was published. (I think I read it in early 2003.) I found it to be a very good forensic analysis of the event.

I haven’t opened that thread, but the title gives me this image: A manhole cover slides back like the cover of a missile silo, or flips open like a missile hatch on a boomer. JFK is launched out of it – fired from a sewer – like a missile. (In my imagination I can’t decide if he’s alive, or if it’s his corpse.)

But since history is written by the [del]victors[/del] movies, we know that Von Richtofen was killed by a Canadian pilot, not an Austailian infantryman, and Damascus was taken from the Turks by the Arabs, not the Australians, even though the Australians later insisted they really got there first. And the Australians either did or didn’t attack the Wells of Beersheba with only hand-held bayonets. But the Australians were the only nation fighting the Turks at Gallipoli, except for the English officer who ordered the suicide charge.

I ascribe the OP to some curse on Australian WWI history.

Heh- the guy who could have stopped the charge at the Nek was Antill who was Australian- he was a dud.
