Newsflash: The Deep South Still Backward, Ignorant, Racist

To some degree, I think a lot of prejudice toward Indian [Hindus] in America comes from the inability of most Americans to tell us apart from Muslims, or to know the difference. I’ve never heard anything worse than casual remarks about Indians/Hindus specifically - stereotype jokes, rather than malicious comments, on the level of, say, cheap-Jew jokes.

On the other hand, we constantly get lumped in with Middle Easterners. Dark skin, wavy black hair, funny accent? Raghead!

Of course, prejudice against Muslims/Arabs/Middle Eastern folk is a bad thing anyway, but IME there’s little or no specifically anti-Indian/Pakistani/Bangladeshi sentiment here as there is in Britain.

I’m not exaggerating when I say I was afraid to leave my fraternity house (where I didn’t even live at the time) for a few days after 9/11.

Here is my explanation for the more tolerant atmosphere in New Jersey. We have large foreign-born population (over 20%), so there is less of an insular culture here. I believe that immigrants here are more likely to be highly educated than immigrants elsewhere in the US (many Koreans, Indians et al with postgrad degrees). New Jersey has a large Jewish population, who tend to be more tolerant and liberal than average. Also, New Jersey has a wealthy and relatively well-educated populace.
I’ve never heard any anti-Indian speech around here, but I have heard some anti-Muslim bigotry since 9/11.

In Michigan we have Dearborn, a suburb of Detroit that is composed of the highest proportion of Middle Easterners anywhere in the country. You would THINK that this would lend itself to a little more tolerance, but no. I had a dorm-mate who couldn’t even go to mosque in the weeks following 9/11 because it wasn’t safe.

This all makes me just very sad.

It’s always one step forward and two steps back with these things.

Middle Easterners aren’t some monolithic bloc you know. Detroit has a very large population of Assyrians and Chaldeans who aren’t the least bit muslim and often aren’t all that fond of muslims themselves. I used to live in
Oak Park and once saw a major rally held by Iraqi-Americans in SUPPORT of the war.

No.

We know that some places vote Republican. Most of the South does, as does Utah and Idaho and Wyoming. The question is, why, when white voters in rest of the country including Utah and Idaho and Wyoming swung their votes towards the Democrats, did whites in the South and Appalachia vote in greater numbers for the Republican? Why did Southern whites not only act differently than their political peers in the rest of the country, but why did they act differently than they themselves did in past elections? What was it about this election that made them act so conspicuously different? That is the question.

If you haven’t looked at the maps in the linked article in the OP, you need to.

I skipped that thread, but I don’t see it in the numbers.

According to the tabulations on CNN (scroll down to the bottom), Prop 8 passed by about 4.6% of the vote, 52.3 - 47.7. Based on the exit polls you linked to, it would have passed if not a single black had voted, since the exits showed blacks as 10% of the vote, and showed that they voted for it by 70-30. So that’s 7%-3% overall. Take them out, and the other 90% still favors Prop 8, 45.3 - 44.7.

Am I missing something?

Not to mention, ANY time an election is won or lost narrowly, a host of minor factors turn out to be bigger than the margin of victory, and can thereby be used to ‘explain’ the result, regardless of their relative importance. Such attempts to explain the outcome should IMHO be ignored, absent some compelling logic in pulling that particular minor factor out of the pile.

Yes, exit polls.

I got my data from here. For the racial breakdown by state, go to the “President Exit Polls” dropdown menu.

That is exactly my point. If someone lives near an area with such diversity, it stands to reason they’d be more tolerant, having been exposed to the many different incarnations of what it means to be from the Middle East. But no.

Yes. We Southerners hate the nigras. So carpetbaggers: stay the fuck out and let us stew in our own ignorance.

We’ll get to stewin’ right after I get back from my meeting with the UAB professor who, earlier this year, discovered where HIV1 came from.

But then we’ll just stew and stew and stew. Yankees keep out.

Now where did I put my hair shirt…

I think the priest was trying to say the same thing you are, but tried to express it in non-philosophical language and screwed it up. If I’m correctly understanding how you are using the word fundamental that is. The Church would say that the substance of the bread and wine changes into the Body and Blood of Christ (both present in each). However, by substance I mean ‘what the thing is’ and not its physical substance. So they ARE truly the body and blood of Christ.

The accidents remain the same however. The Body will taste like bread and the Precious Blood will taste like wine and scientific analysis will show wine and bread.

I think the priest was trying to say that they don’t change in their accidents, but instead change in their substance, but did so with clumsy language.

Thanks, I appreciate that.

Now, looking at that (very cool) map linked to in the OP, and on #2, I see that only a very few counties in MS voted “more Republican”. Like, maybe six. I feel better now.

Thank you.

My guess it was from a nigra. Or a Jew. Or maybe a nigra Jew like Sammy Davis Jr. who had sex with a monkey and then the monkey had sex with that fag airline attendant who came over here and spread it all over the place in an orgy at the New York Times, and then the Yankees who got it at that orgy moved down to the South and wouldn’t leave and put it in the blood banks and the gals they corrupted.

Once again I’ll say it: Forget it, Jake. It’s Chinatown.

I swear these fucking threads are to me like the Mafia to Michael Corleone. I keep saying I’m out but…

That is not true. Just the other day I was on a bus here in Montgomery and there was a little old black lady who could barely walk, and the white bus driver got up and let her take his arm as he led her all the way to the back of the bus.

There is no restaurant or bar in Montgomery, the city of Rosa Parks, that black people cannot dine in. Black people who live down here are also Southerners, incidentally, a distinction that many posters seem to forget when they seem to think of Southerners exclusively as White Protestants (two simple words that would exclude, among a few million others, Martin Luther King [and every other black person], Flannery O’Connor, Walker Percy, Judah Benjamin [do people know that Reform Judaism was founded in the South, I wonder[, Stephen Colbert, Tony “Angels in America” Kushner [born in NYC but raised in Louisiana where his ancestors lived], Shelby Foote [half Jewish, half Catholic, and for that matter mostly Yankee in ancestry],Bobby Jindal).

Anecdotal, but true nonetheless: I’ve known many interracial couples, and while they encounter bigotry upon occasion those who’ve lived elsewhere are unanimous that it’s nothing compared to NYC, Chicago, and other “enlightened” areas of the country, and in fact it’s why some came back here.

My boss’s mother is white and in her 80s and drove black housekeepers during the Bus boycott- she was one of MANY whites who assisted in the Civil Rights (how often do you hear the name Virginia Durr outside Montgomery, a woman that Rosa Parks herself said was more the mother of the Civil Rights movement in Alabama than she was? Or her brother-in-law, Hugo Black, he who “as a young man put on white robes to scare black folks and as an old man put on black robes to scare white folks”?)

I’m a gay agnostic liberal. TRUST ME, I’m quite familiar with the ignorance and the racial tensions and the inequities and the sometimes oppressive conservatism and the daily DAILY SHOW fodder worthy politics and dumbass statements. But to say the South has made no progress or isn’t changing is not just insulting but grossly ignorant. There are gay bars in Southern cities where that wouldn’t have been thinkable even in my lifetime; there’s a sushi bar at the Univ. of Alabama student cafeteria, there’s a club there for transgender students, and most people weren’t alive the last time non-whites were forbidden to enroll at any institution. When the principal of a rural town school makes a racist comment in Alabama there’s far more outcry from white and black parents than there is agreement (and, I hate but have to say it since it’s a standard of bigots, but there is truth in it: if a white principal makes an indefensible racist statement about black students and a black principal makes an indefensibly racist statement about white students, guess which one is far more likely to make the national news? Another thing people forget is that, to quote Gary Coleman from AVENUE Q, “Bigotry has never been exclusively whiiiiiite…”).

The South is like a dysfunctional family but the emphasis is on the family more than the dysfunctional to those of us who grew up in it. We might call them a bunch of fucking lunatic hillbillies from time to time but we advise others to look to the planks in their own eyes. I’ve mentioned the term “Dixiephrenia” several times but it’s amazing how my bristles rise when I read threads such as these with posts from people who would never have the guts even if they had the inclination to make such sweeping statements about black men or Jews or even Muslims as they feel total impunity from making about white southerners. I come into these threads as a fan of Albert Fucking Brooks and I read a few threads and convert into Preston Fucking Brooks. (“You’ve libeled [my home] and my [family] suh… and I see you are pallid… let me introduce your pale ‘n’ mah cane…”).

As a black Southerner of your approximate age, I wished to chime in to agree with the vast majority of what you wrote.

The polls show that the younger generation of whites are not voting with the older generations of whites. Sampiro appears to be correct in his defense that things are getting better and it is not just Northerner migrating south.

Though you know if you, Ogre and others could stop with the taking offense and so taking potshots back at Northerners it would help those of us Northerners trying to argue against the idea of the Op.

Help what, exactly? Change the mind of the OP? I don’t think so. He doesn’t like the South. He never has. He never will. Very little I can do will change his mind, so fuck him.

I appreciate your efforts, but y’know, there’s only so much bullshit I’m willing to take in a Pit thread from some ignorant hammerhead who bases his entire idea of the social realities of the South on a fucking electoral map.

OK, but remember we’re all different up North too, that is all I ask.

Well, you are aware of the fact that a nigra jew killed my daddy, right?
