Favre really looked sharp. There’s a reason he doesn’t need practice or training camp to build timing/chemistry with his players…he’s just that damn good.
I think the Saints v. Vikings game will surprise a lot of people. I predict a low scoring game, something like 14-9 or so. Both defenses will play pretty well, Favre will throw at least one interception, and Brees will have just an average game.
The fun thing about watching Favre is that everything he does is an NFL career passing record. So last night, we saw new NFL career records set for pass attempts, pass completions, passing yards, passing TDs, and INTs thrown.
And the Vikings lost, what more do you need out of an opener?
In other news, I’m going to ask the same question I asked in a different thread: why did the Vikings give up on the run so early in the game? At no time were they ever behind by more than one score. But they gave Peterson only six carries in the entire second half of the game - and three of those six came on their first three snaps in the third quarter. Then, for the rest of the third quarter, they had three offensive possessions and each time, did exactly the same thing: first down run by Peterson, second down pass attempt by Favre (incomplete), third down pass attempt by Favre (incomplete), punt.
Then the Vikings didn’t call one single run play in the entire fourth quarter. On their last possession, which started with nine minutes left and down five points, they were chucking it as if they had to make up two touchdowns in four minutes.
I think that’s inexplicable. In the first half the Vikings were using the run to good effect, chewing up a lot of clock and tiring out the Saints defense. Then they just… gave up on it. Bad coaching by Brad Childress, I think.
That pissed me off too. Adrian had a good first half and was putting a beating on the defense. Right at the beginning of the 3rd quarter, he had 20 yards in his first 3 carries, and you could sense he was close to breaking one at at any second. Then they went completely away from the run, even though Brett was ice cold. Fucking Childress. What the fuck?
I had a really bad experience on/from Yahoo. I know; this is different - this is Dopers. But once after I signed up with them my e-mail got so clogged with spam I had to just close that account and try again elsewhere. Don’t know if it was a virus or what - just know it was a pain.
I love the Purple People Eaters and all they stand for (mostly hopes of next season) but I don’t know if to call a whoosh or call for a cite on this one. :smack:
On the officials - because of the position change look for the Vikes and maybe others to get a lot of calls that slipped through before on offense.
When Favre had his worst seasons it was because he felt he had to make plays with his arm and he he didn’t have recivers he could rely on. Now, in those years he also didn’t have much of a running game, so he needs to, as does Chilly, understand that they have one of the best if not the best RB in the league It is just mind-boggling that they don’t take advantage of that. If they don’t do that, if they insist on making sure Favre gets to fling the ball around, it could end up pretty badly. Favre had a great year last year, but we all know Favre tends to exist in both tails of the bell curve and things can turn from one year to the next pretty quickly.
I was joking about Favre looking sharp. He looked pretty lousy. I was poking fun at the fact that had he not waffled around on his decision whether to play or not so long, maybe he could have gotten some time in with his offense and built some timing with his wideouts, and chemistry with his line. He looked incredibly rusty to me.
Being in Pittsburgh so long, its hard to tell when football fans are kidding. I remember the Stiller Nation booing a quarterback (Bradshaw and Mark Malone both) WHILE HE WAS WINNING THE GAME!
What happens if the Vikes can’t get it together by midseason? They have a tough haul and being 2-6 isn’t totally out of the question. Does Brett just walk away at that point?
Chilly was outcoached big time. Both Saints TDs came in the first possesions of each half. Payton made adjustments and Chilly groomed his moustache, apparently.
Yeah, and I agree with Dio and others that were flummoxed as to why Peterson wasn’t used more in the second half, especially in light of the score being as close as it was and the fact that you’re sitting there watching Favre stink up the joint play after play. Why do you stop using your one weapon that was actually working?
