NFL 2020: Week 13

Giants-Seahawks at 8-5 has a 33+% chance of achieving scorigami.

Down 20-3 to the Packers, the Eagles have benched Carson Wentz, and put in Jalen Hurts.

That’s Belichick for you. Passing (for a TD), up 38-0 with 6 minutes left. What a bush league move.

Giants beat the Seahawks in Seattle. The upset of the week?

Probably. I sure didn’t expect it. I chalk it up to the offensive line injuries leading to no protection in running or passing plays against a stout Giants defense. Who knew that improved OL for Seattle was so critical? The Seattle defense sure seemed to do its part for most of the game.

Packers have a winning season (I got scared there for a bit)

A few examples of how bad this team has been – this is through 11 games (i.e., not counting today), but that won’t really change the findings much. (All stats from Pro Football Reference)

On offense:

  • They are dead last in points scored – 152 points, over 50 points behind #31 (Denver at 209)
  • They are also dead last in yards gained – 2946 yards, over 400 yards behind #31 (Chicago at 3359)
  • Fewest first downs
  • Lowest percentage of offensive drives ending in a score (25.6%)
  • Next to last in passing completion percentage (54.7%) – only Denver is worse, and they started a WR at QB last week

On defense, where they appear to be just bad, not horrid:

  • #29 on points allowed
  • #27 on yards allowed
  • Most missed tackles of any defense
  • Highest opponent pass completion percentage allowed (71.8%)

The ball was on the SD 38, and it was a short pass over the middle from a backup QB who was in for reps. It’s not Belichick’s fault that SD couldn’t play defense.

Part of the reason I enjoy the NFL is that it is unpredictable. The Giants taking it to the Seahawks and onetime MVP leader Russell Wilson? No way! There are always some things that completely surprise me about the NFL (except the greed and ego of the owners, that never changes). Here’s a short list of things I don’t quite understand about the NFL.

  1. Who needs elite QB’s? The Saints, once again, seem to be able to get through an injury to a (once) elite QB with a solid, if completely unremarkable, backup QB. Amazing what defense, solid running game, and no mistakes by the QB can do. (See also Colt McCoy). I tire of the Taysom Hill show (more the hype than the player), but it’s hard to argue that he’s holding down the fort well. But I doubt he’s long term starter material.

  2. Why is Drew Lock a thing? 2 interceptions, a 63.2 passer rating, and a loss when the defense played great against the Chiefs. And NFL.com says: " the Broncos brought the effort, the defense looked solid and Drew Lock had his moments." Unless I misread the tone, they didn’t mean "moments’ of sucking.

  3. How could anyone but Kevin Stefanski win Coach of the Year? The resurgent Browns looked great on Sunday, and Myles Garrett remains a blast to watch. I think that offensive line of the Browns is the most unsung hero of the year. Let’s here it for the fat guys!

  4. Haahahahahahahahahahahahaaaaa!!! Gregg Williams calls an all out blitz and costs his team a win. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAA!! Fuck him.

  5. Will the Jalen Hurts era start in Philly? I’d be shocked if they give up on Wentz due to the injuries surrounding him (and his massive contract), but he’s certainly not playing very well. I guess that’s why coaches make the big bucks.

Yeah, here’s the play. Jarrett Stidham Connects with Gunner Olszewski for a 38-yard Touchdown

Wasn’t exactly padding the stats. The Bolts left the receiver wide open.

This isn’t a college team hanging 100 on some hapless directional school that needs the pay check to fund the athletic program. And it’s not like NE went for two.

This. The QB has thrown 26 passes on the season and completed 13. This was his second TD. The receiver has caught 3 passes, and this was his first TD.

You play your backups so they can get some experience in game situations. You might need them later in the season.

To be fair, the announcer did comment on it not sitting well with SD, throwing when up 38-0, but he’s wrong too. It’s not like they were throwing 40 yard bombs. SD put a lot up front and NE took what they gave them.

Aside from a dumb fumble, he played really well yesterday. And he ran for 83 yards! Considering this is only his 3rd start, he may mature into a quality starter, if not more.

Jets reportedly fire Gregg Williams. How he ever had a job is beyond me.

Surprised the Brownies really put it to the Titans this week. Titans seem like a pretty decent team, but the AFC north really seems to have their number this year (unless of course the game seems out of reach).

Steelers - Up 27-7 early in the 3rd quarter (but then barely hang on to win)
Bengals - Up 24-7 early in the 4th quarter (go on to get one of their 2 wins on the season)
Ravens - Up 21-10 midway through the 3rd quarter (then blow it and Titans win in OT)
Browns - Up 38-7 at the half (Titans make it a one score game in the second half)

Hey now, he’s just trying to impress the Committee in case they end up sending two SEC schools to the playoff.

At one time, a decent DC; in recent years, a totally arrogant sonofabitch whose game is stale and outdated. That he got fired for basically pulling a Buddy Ryan defense is fitting because there’s a lot of Buddy Ryan in that guy’s personality.

I think the Jets blitz actually wasn’t a bad idea, it’s just that the Raiders picked it up perfectly. In that situation, the Raiders had no timeouts left, so a sack would have made it very possible that the clock would expire without Las Vegas getting to get another snap off (and even if they did, it would have been a totally-chaotic 4th down play since they couldn’t call a huddle).

Playing men deep in an ‘obvious’ play-defenders-deep situation can backfire, as the Cowboys learned when they played many guys deep on a 3rd-and-20 against Aaron Rodgers and the Pack in the playoffs years ago…and Rodgers, under zero pressure, burned them for a deep ball anyway.

That Las Vegas RB, #30, did an outstanding job recognizing pre-snap where the blitz was coming from and blocking the extra incoming guy to buy Carr the 2 seconds extra time he needed.

Aw man, this Monday afternoon game bullshit threw me off. I forgot there was a game and I didn’t get to see Pittsburgh lose their streak to the Football Team.

Well, I did not see that coming. Steelers blow a 14-point first half lead.
