NFL 2023-2024: Super Bowl 58

I’d love to see the 49ers get the carrot yanked away at the last moment yet again.

The 49ers have been my team for 39 years now. This season has felt special. I couldn’t predict anything other then a win. Another comeback or a blowout I couldn’t say, but the 49ers are going to win.

Through like 14 weeks of the season Purdy had unquestionably the best advanced stats of any QB. People tried to slap all kinds of labels on him, notably game manager, but the stats never backed that up. He threw downfield more than any QB. He was absolutely lethal when he escaped the pocket. He was both efficient and aggressive. He was great inside and outside the pocket.

Vegas understandably had him at or near the top of the MVP odds.

When it becomes time to start debating the MVP in the media there was a mountain of outright and obliquely racist commentary from the Lamar supporters. It wasn’t pro-Lamar, it was shit all over Purdy in every single discussion. And 90% of what was said wasn’t backed up by either the tape or the stats. Purdy went on to hype up McCaffery as the MVP, as a good teammate might, which critics decided to use to further shit on him.

Of course Purdy got whipped by the Ravens in week 15 so the debate pretty much ended there, and of course the Lamar truthers did not acquit themselves well in the post game discussion.

So Lamar and the Ravens flaming out in the postseason again and Purdy doing the exact opposite leading comebacks is the football gods coming in and setting things right.

Make no mistake. This Super Bowl is a match up of the two best QBs in the league this year, full stop.

I hope someone will make a thread for the commercials.
That said, somehow I feel the 49ers will win it by 2.

DirecTV is feuding with our local CBS affiliate. The game is not going to be on for us. Apparently, I could watch it on Paramount Plus if I had a smart TV.

ETA: Apparently, I do have a smart TV. (Hence, Netflix etc.) But, alas, Paramount + is not one of the apps it comes with.

Depending on the age of your TV, you might be able to download and install the Paramount+ app. And I just read that you can sign up for Paramount+ for a free week’s trial. (Don’t forget to cancel it before the week is up.)

If you cannot download and install the app on your TV, you should be able to watch it on your laptop or other computer. Then you may be able to cast it to your television.

Thanks. I’m getting the idea that it would be possible. Probably need the assistance of some children to get it going. Instead, we’re going bowling.

A Chiefs win would be great not only because it would reinforce the idea of a champion being able to play from behind and never giving up, it would really force Stupid America to come to terms with the ironclad fact that non-sports stars being involved in sports is not new. Seriously, for a big stretch of the 90’s you couldn’t watch an NBA game…any teams, any point in the season…without seeing Spike Lee in some capacity. When Andre Agassi hooked up with (going from memory here) Brooke Shields, she got more press than him. David Arquette’s stint in WCW lasted several months. Mitt Romney’s tweet over a Utah Jazz game made headlines. Why is this a big problem now? Besides that, it’s always cool to see flyover country get its due; felt the same way about the Milwaukee Bucks and Kansas City Royals.

On the other hand, a 49ers win would be just fine because 1. It’s a great city despite everything, 2. A “Mr. Irrelevant” success story is never not heartwarming, 3. It’ll finally prove once and for all that it wasn’t all Joe Montana (whose all-consuming hype I found nearly as insufferable as Michael Jordan’s), and 4. They’ll have more Super Bowls than the Cowboys and we can finally bury this “America’s Team” bullcrap once and for all.

Damn. :slightly_frowning_face: I really hate these situations were I don’t want either side to lose. This is Kristy Sellars vs. The Mayyas times ten. I actually would’ve been perfectly fine with the Chiefs beating the Lions, as no one would’ve seriously expected the Lions to have a chance and it still would’ve been an absolutely phenomenal season for them.

Still, based on everything I’ve seen, it looks like the 49ers have gotten this far with smoke and mirrors and can suffer a big letdown at any time, while the Chiefs seem to have worked out all their dumb mistakes in the Bills game. I’ve long since move past the utter folly of predictions of course, but my gut’s telling me 55/45 Chiefs, and it’s almost certainly coming down to which side makes the fewest mistakes.

Well, that’s about all I got. Good night, everybody. :sleeping_bed:

They were, in fact, married for a couple of years in the late '90s. Prior to that, Agassi had dated Barbra Streisand for a time.

San Francisco has the #2 scoring offense, and the #3 scoring defense in the entire NFL. Concluding they are in the Super Bowl is just due to “smoke and mirrors” is pstently silly.

Things are finally starting…

Sick of the Chiefs. I’m totally rooting for Niners. Still, if I bet on sports games, I think I’d go with the Chiefs. Mainly because of Pat and Andy’s game clock control.

Predicting… swami sez… Chiefs 31, Niners 27. Hope I’m wrong.

I hope the score is even higher than that!
And maybe no bad calls or missed calls.

That almost certainly will not happen.

I appreciate your optimism, but we both know that won’t happen. We’re stuck with that BS forever.

The commercial with the teams named after birds acting like birds was fun. The rookie egg was amusing.

First drive…

Wow, KC defense coming out flat.

Chiefs got the loose ball!
