All valid points but watching Purdy…there’s just something there. An “it” factor that just seems like he gets it. Circumstances matter and I’m sure he wouldn’t be 10-0 on most other teams, but he’s not Nick Muillens.
Well, five weeks in and the Patriots are a fucking disaster - like the laughingstock Patriots teams of the 70s and 80s. Matt Patricia - the whipping boy for the offensive woes last year - must be feeling at least a little schaudenfruede. The team is terrible in all phases and - at least according to local media - Belichick is on the hot seat after these embarrassing performances. Yikes. I thought they were going to be pretty mediocre and go nowhere due to their difficult schedule, but nothing prepared me for this dumpster fire.
Tough to win when the opponents of your last two games have scored 70+ points to your 3. Isn’t Bellichick responsible for player recruitment and selection? It’s not like he’s dealing with the cards he was dealt by the owner - he has a hand in picking the players, right?
After the opening game against us where he looked like the new Aaron Rodgers to the point where one of the announcers actually said, “the Jordan Love era has begun”, he has been a disaster. He threw 3 picks last night, the last one a killer in the final minute or so. As much as I hate Rodgers, he would have thrown a TD pass instead and won the game. I think Love has the lowest completion rate in the NFL and, if not the highest, one of the highest interception rates.
I had something else going on last night, but I had planned on listening to the game on the radio on the drive back and maybe catch the end on TV. The Packers usually do better when I’m not watching (I stopped watching that week where they came back from a sizable deficit)
Sorry my non-watching didn’t help enough.
Love is a football loving coach’s kid playing dress-up NFL QB for Halloween. 3 years in, and he still looks like the QB he did in college: looks the part, but is easily thrown off his game and is horribly inaccurate. I was really hoping he was further along in his development, but he looks like a rookie, project QB. When things go his way, you think he could be a legit NFL QB, and he flashes enticing ability, but he’s nowhere near ready to face good defenses.
I’m not giving up on him yet, and experience is the best teacher in the NFL, but I am back to how I felt about him when the Packers drafted him: what a waste.
As I understand it, Rodgers was highly insulted and incensed when the Packers drafted him. Did he do any of the things veteran quarterbacks do to help the new guy develop? Perhaps he is for all intent and purpose a rookie project QB.
He had two with Olivia Munn. She took them both. Can’t imagine why, as Rodgers has shown himself to be the most caring soul I’ve ever heard of. He cares about himself a whole lot.
I’ve watched every game since Purdy took over and Nick Mullens is not even close. They have similar styles and arm strength, but the main differentiator is that Purdy is NFL-smart beyond his years. And Mullens’s years. And many others.
Purdy is very aware of the pocket, if it is holding or if it is collapsing, and when it’s collapsing his decisions are very smart. He moves, or he smartly throws the ball away. He hardly gets sacked. Any nervousness in a collapsing pocket does not seem to affect his decisions. With Jimmy Garropolo, it was aggravating how poor his decisions were when the pocket collapsed. He ate the ball many more times than he needed to. With Purdy, he is calm, comfortable, and brave back there.
Purdy reads through his progressions well. And he reads them quickly and accurately. If his receiver is open, he recognizes that quickly and he delivers the ball accurately. If the receiver is covered he moves quickly to the next option.
This guy is smart beyond his years. And it is a beautiful thing to watch.
He also plays within his limitations, and by that I mostly refer to his arm strength. He doesn’t try to do too much. And also it’s the system he’s playing in. Shanahan and Griese and Kubiak are doing a great job in bringing him along.
There was another 49er QB who did not have great arm strength and also read the defense quickly and made good decisions and good throws. And I’m starting to see many similarities. Do I dare bring up his name this early in Purdy’s career? That name is Joe Montana. See also: Jeff Garcia. A lot of similarities with the way they played the game. (And true, there many differences with the results of their careers. But it is so very early for Purdy.)
I’ve also noticed that the game announcers and the analysts are no longer using a certain name for Purdy. That name is Mr. Irrelevant. I can’t recall the last time that was used, but it has been a long while.
Purdy has been damned fun to watch. The touch on his passes is uncannily precise. It’s a beautiful thing to see (except see my UCL comment that follows). To say that I used to QB a little bit is giving me way too much credit, but I believe that if a receiver has half a step on a defender, or less, or if that receiver is double or triple covered but has just even a tiny bit of separation, then a well-placed ball will be catchable 100% of the time. Purdy is delivering well-placed balls. It is beautiful to watch. When I played I loved being able to deliver such nice balls. The few times I did it, but when it’s done it is beautiful.
My main question about him today is if his repaired UCL tear has altered his mechanics so much that he’s sometimes struggling with his delivery. His accuracy this season is not quite what it was last season. And last season it was near perfect. This season it has sometimes been a little less than perfect. On a few of his throws it has been a lot less than perfect. I don’t recall that being an issue at all last season.
The 49ers have a gem in the rough with Purdy. And now the nation and the world know about it.
Colts place Anthony Richardson on IR, meaning he can’t play again until week 10 at the earliest. Indianapolis has a bye week for week 11, so I don’t think we’ll see him until week 12, at least.
But the Colts are 3-0 in games in which Gardener Minshew either starts or plays significant snaps.
