NFL 2023: WEEK NINE times out of ten

Oh, I totally agree that it’s way too early to judge. I was merely pointing out that anointing Shanahan as the best/smartest coach in the NFL might be a bit of a stretch. He’s a fine and innovative coach, to be sure, but maybe we should wait until he’s won a couple of Super Bowls before proclaiming him to be the smartest coach in the league.

Shanahan has consistently turned mediocre QBs into top 5 players statistically. That is a function of his offense. I am not saying that he’s a great game day coach, just that he is better at designing a passing offense than others. And I didn’t say Stroud was always throwing to his first read. I said it’s a first read offense - meaning the scheme is designed to get the first read open and the QB will rarely have to go through progressions. Stroud wasn’t good at that in college and he probably isn’t good at it now.

Who are these top 5 statistical QBs? Jimmy G? Nope. Nick Mullins? Nope. Maybe one game here or there where the QB is statistically in the top 5. But I dont recall that he ever “turned mediocre QBs into top 5 players statistically”, let alone ever doing it “consistently”.

That said, he can certainly turn a certain type of QB into a legit, starting, average NFL QB, which is no small feat. His ability to maximize an average QB’s skills is impressive. But after watching him overpay for Jimmy G and almost critically hamstringing his team with the Trey Lance fiasco, I dare say his wins dont necessarily utweigh his losses in the QB pisition.

Nick Mullens? Yup.

Maybe you’re talking about his days as an OC? Because in the 7+ years he’s been the Niners HC, his QBs have been okay, but certainly not top 5. As @Hamlet pointed out, that list of starting QBs includes C.J. Beathard, Brian Hoyer, Jimmy G, Nick Mullens, Trey Lance, and Brock Purdy. I don’t see a whole lot of top 5 quarterbacks in that group. Mediocre? Maybe. Top 5? Nope.

The Niners passing offense since Shanahan became head coach has ranked:

2017: 9th
2018: 15th
2019: 13th
2020: 12th
2021: 12th
2022: 13th
2023 thus far: 13th

Jets - Chargers.

That went well. I actually missed the game. Anyone know where I can see a replay?
jk

Wow. That is some serious cherry-picking right there. Mullins’ “first 16 starts” covered 3 different years. His first 8 came in 2018, when he finished 30th in passing yards (but 7th in ypg). Then he was benched again all of 2019. Then in 2020, Garopollo gets injured again, and he has 8 starts again. He finished that season 26th in passing yards and 20th in passing yards per game.

Daniel Jones is done for the year with a torn ACL.

Shanahan’s offense is based around the running game and will never be a league leader in passing yards overall. The passing game is mostly based off play-action and misdirection, and where it shine statistically is the yards per attempt line.

2017: 15th (7.0 overall, but Garoppolo’s 8.8 in five games was higher than the Saints’ 8.2 on the season)
2018: 7th (8.0)
2019: 2nd (8.3)
2020: 9th (7.6)
2021: 1st (tied with Cincinnati at 8.5)
2022: 1st (8.0)
2023 so far: 1st (9.0)

Jimmy G’s career Y/A is tied for third in league history. Purdy hasn’t played enough to qualify, but so far he’s behind only Otto Graham.

Note to self… Don’t be a starting QB for a New York NFL team this year.

I think that’s an aspiration I can actually achieve.

Josh Allen should be fine,

What do Canadians have to do with New York?

Which reinforces the point that @Hamlet and I both made: that Shanahan most decidedly does not turn mediocre quarterbacks into top 5 quarterbacks. His quarterbacks are solid and made good decisions, but won’t ever be in the top 5, other than Y/A, as you noted.

His quarterbacks do tend to have better numbers with him than with other OCs. Matt Schaub, Brian Hoyer, RGIII, Matt Ryan, and others have had career years with Kyle calling plays.

The 49ers started the season with three straight games scoring 30 points. They’re now on a streak of three straight games scoring 17 points.

According to statistics, we should now get two games of randomness.

And then they’ll be scoring 4 points. I really want to see that.

With Stafford questionable, the Rams pick up Carson Wentz. At least it’s a step up from Rypien.

New York teams are teams that literally have “New York” in their names.

It has nothing to do with geography. Heck, they play in New Jersey.

Alternately, New York City teams. Most teams are named after cities, not much of a leap to assume the two Jersey teams are as well.
