NFL Draft 2008 - Let's make a mock-ery.

What did the Colts trade their pick to the Niners for?

The updated list I posted above turned out to be less than helpful to me. Much more useful is a spreadsheet I threw together. Since I can’t post an attachment, here’s a text dump of it in CSV form. Copy the following text into notepad and save it with a csv extension instead of txt. Open it in Excel and auto-size all the columns:

Draft day trade from last year:

I think the Colts got the best of that deal based on how good Ugoh turned out.

Yeah… although a first and a fourth for a mid-second seems awful pricey.

I guess if you’re the Colts you know your pick is going to be in the last six anyway…

True, but it was a 1st rounder for next year at the time. The popular wisdom is that picks for future years depreciate by one round per year, meaning it was the equivalent of a late second and a fourth. So long as a superstar doesn’t fall to the Niners in that slot it’ll be tough to argue that the Colts screwed up.

In an effort to move the draft along, I’ll select **James Hardy, WR, Indiana ** for the 'Boys here. They could use some youth at that position.

49ers, sucking at every position except linebacker, select one anyway to pair with tackling machine Patrick Willis:

Dan Connor, ILB, Penn State.

Green Bay Packers

The Packers don’t have a lot of holes, and might be looking to trade down. But in this draft, since they need a pass rusher to bookend with Aaron Kampman, it’s a no brainer. They get the BPA, which is how Thompson likes to draft, and they fill a need too.

Packers select Phillip Merling, DE, Clemson.

Here’s the update. I think Ellis might want to make the Giants pick. I’m not sure though…

(My money is on him taking Kenny Phillips)

MINE! MINE! MINE!lower case

The Giants have pretty steadfastly taken the BPA in the first round for the past few years, regardless of need. (Mathias Kiwanuka?!) I see this trend continuing. That safety is absolutely NOT the BPA at this point.

Also, even if they were to draft for need, the Giants don’t actually have any pressing needs. Every pick is a luxury this draft. Some people say linebacker, but they return two of last year’s starters and they are very high on the young Gerris Wilkinson stepping into a starting role anyway.

As for safeties, both starters went down for multiple games last year, and even when both were out in the same game the two backups stepped in ably. They lost one starter and signed a veteran free agent, so really the safety situation is the same as it was last year already. Minor downgrade, but warm-body-wise it’s a push.

I also don’t know why all the experts keep saying they are thin along the OL. They lost nobody, and they absolutely were NOT thin last year. It may just be residual sentiment that they can’t possibly have just moved guard David Diehl over to starting LT. They can, they did, and it worked.

So given all this, the Giants jump for joy that the Cowboys inexplicably / irrationally passed on the BPA who also filled one of their needs, and I spooje my pants just a little as…

The Giants select Antoine Cason, CB, Arizona

Cason fits many of the recent trends for the Giants. They moved away from pure speed at DB (Will Allen) toward better hands, which Cason fits just like Ross (who isn’t even as fast as his girlfriend) did last year.

The Giants also really like tall players at just about every position. Hell, their starting RB is 6’4"! Anyway, pairing Cason with Ross would give them a tall secondary with great hands. I would so love this in real life, but I don’t see any scenario where Cason falls this far. Certainly not past Dallas.

Here’s a

[quote]
(http://walterfootball.com/draft2008CB.php) on Cason:

The Dolphins are back for their second pick and Parcells looks to the defensive line after going with Jake Long at #1.

  1. Miami Dolphins
    DE - Calais Campbell, Miami

Campbell is the ideal player for a DE in a 3-4 scheme. He’s just enormous and has the size to play inside. Scouts have questioned his ability to get around the end due to his size and corresponding lack of speed, but the corner rush comes from the OLB in a 3-4 making it somewhat moot for him if the Dolphins play the 3-4 as expected. If he slides this far I think the Dolphins will be doing backflips since they passed on Dorsey and Chris Long.

My prediction: the “best” receiver is on the board, but he won’t be there for long. There will also be a run on tight ends very soon as well as quarterbacks when people start realizing that their “Quarterback For The Future” is there still. Linebackers will quickly be en vogue.

I agree with the pick; I wonder about the rumored lack of actual production in games and the rumored propensity to disappear in games as well.
He’s got a knock that he’s lazy. Rumors, of course.

Ellis, no Kenny Phillips?

There is something very, very wrong with that list. I can give you 1-3 and 5, but if the knock on a certain player missing is that he played weaker competition, then why the flying eff is Matt Forte, the second-best running back from the same conference on there?

St. Louis Rams

Last season revealled their desperate need for help on the O Line. Injuries and mediocrity on the line hurt their offensive production severly. Since they got Dorsey in the first, they’ll probably be looking for O Line help. One twist in their plan could be the free fall Malcolm Kelly and Mario Manningham are doing on draft boards. If they’re convinced these two first round talents with 7th round heads and gigantic ego’s, have pulled it together, they may grab one or the other here. But, in the end, I think the Rams will want to grab O Line help.

St. Louis Rams select Sam Baker, OT, USC.

There is nothing exciting about Baker. He’s not a monster and he doesn’t have amazing measurables. All he does is play consistently and well. He’s a four year starter at LT for one of the premiere college football programs in the nation. He’s a solid worker, with great production, and great technique. The Rams will be happy to have him.

The Atlanta Falcons, with their top three QB choices off the board, make a move to replace the recently departed Alge Crumpler: the pick is Dustin Keller, TE, USC.

Kansas City Chiefs

The Chiefs only need help on the O Line, in the defensive secondary, at WR, and, depending on Jared Allen, the defensive line. That’s not too much to ask is it? Kansas City could go a wide variety of ways, from getting Mario or Malcolm to rebuilding the O Line with Collins or Rachel, to shoring up the secondary with Brandon Flowers (a great fit for the Cover 2) or versatile Reggie Smith who could play almost anywhere in the secondary, to grabbing a DE Lawrence Jackson if Allen moves on to Minnesota (although if Allen is traded, the Chiefs will get the Vikes #17 and use it on a DE). In the end, I think they’ll wait on WR, and the talent pool on O Line may not justify a pick here. So, I think they’ll try and find Ty Law’s replacement. I like Reggie Smith, because of his versatility and return abilities, but his injury is a concern.

Kansas City Chiefs select Brandon Flowers, CB, Virginia Tech.

A hard hitting CB, Flowers has 16 career interceptions and knows how to jump routes. The big knock on him is his poor timed speed at the combine.

The Jets need to add speed at running back, and since they missed out on McFadden, the pick here is Jamaal Charles, RB, Texas. I personally don’t think much of him but he’s certainly got quicks.

Matt Forte is the running back from Tulane. He doesn’t have home run speed, but a lot of analysts really think he’ll translate nicely to the pros. Many retired running backs see a lot of very good things with him.
Are you complaining because the sixth person on the “top 5” wasn’t in it? If you don’t know who Matt Forte is, maybe you should. He had 2100 yards rushing this past year.
