He’s an above average college guard. Personally, I think unless you’re a complete stud (DeCastro apparently, maybe Iupati), it’s poor value to draft a guard in the first round. I don’t think Danny Watkins is two rounds better than John Moffitt, or that Chilo Racheal is two rounds better than Josh Sitton. For all the grief the Browns get for drafting a running back, a position that is now seen as easily replaceable later in the draft; I think that’s more true for the guard position.
Well, Hamlet, it seems Colt McCoy may soon be your problem.
That would be a great move by the Packers, McCoy would be a great backup.
I don’t think the contingent of Browns’ fans who think McCoy is a franchise quarterback is that numerous and strong. McCoy was a third round pick, been around a couple years, and had a shot, with middle of the road success. I don’t think he’s the kind of guy like Tebow, who will engender massive amounts of press if he’s no longer the starter.
The Browns can start the seasons with McCoy. If he does great, that’s wonderful; you have a great starting QB and a guy you can develop if need be. If he does poorly, you’ve learned your lesson and you throw Wheedon in there if he’s ready. If he does just OK, that’s a bit of a problem, but I just don’t see the fanbase getting all angry if you demote an OK quarterback to give your first rounder a choice.
I agree. I was kinda rooting for Graham Harrell or a project QB late in the draft, but McCoy would be a OK backup. And I doubt the price will be too high.
McCoy really can’t stay, because Seneca Wallace has to be the backup. It’s one of Holmgren’s rules.
I just don’t buy into the idea that we can know about any of these guys. All draft picks are essentially wagers, all with varying odds of success or failure, and anyone who insists they know how good so-and-so is going to be is simply fooling themselves. It’s sheer fantasy.
(Very talented young DT + talented young DB) > (very, very talented DB + replacement-level player). Pretty much every objective analysis I’ve ever seen supports that kind of approach.
You can’t always do it, because you only have so many roster spots, and (as noted previously) so many practice reps. But bad teams, especially very bad teams like the Rams, have room on the roster to load up on young guys full of potential.
Oh, if you’re just saying keep McCoy as a backup, that’s different. When I said “give up on,” I meant “give up on developing as a potential starter.” Obviously, they can keep McCoy on the roster; everybody has a backup or two. But the point is, simultaneously developing two young QBs is easier said than done.
With three picks in top half of the 2nd round the Rams are pretty set to fill some needs. I can see them getting the WR they missed in the first. My personal choices are between Randle and Hill, but I can see the argument for Jeffery too. I would like them to go OL, WR then either RB or OLB for the third pick. Of the two I would take the OLB here and go for LaMichael James in the 3rd or 4th round. If they could do Glenn, then Randle/Hill/Jeffery, then either Lamar Miller or Courtney Upshaw I would not have to borrow Beef’s rapin’ boots.
You mean the #126 they traded away half an hour after getting it?
They gave up 25 and got 31 and 126, and then gave up 31 and 126 and got 36 and 101.
In sum, they gave up 25 and got 36 and 101.
In contrast to other teams trading back, like the Ravens and Bengals, that’s not great.
I’m underwhelmed with the Giants pick - but that’s largely since Jonathan Martin was still available. On the other hand, they needed a running back, and if they HAD to have Wilson it’s unlikely he would have been there at the end of the second round. This might have been a good place to trade back in an effort to get 2 decent 2nd round picks. All will be forgiven if they can pick up a quality OT with their 2nd rounder.
To a point, I agree. But none of that should stop us from giving our own opinions. I suppose we could all just say “Well, the teams know what they’re doing so let’s assume they’ve done it right” and not offer any criticism or praise, but where’s the fun in that.
I don’t think Brockers is a very talented DT, and I think that any CB the Rams pick in the spot they got (Josh Robinson? Brandon Boykin?) are going to be a huge step down from Claiborne. To me, Claiborne is a better prospect than Brockers and any CB they can grab at 45 combined.
But the potential for Claiborne is so much higher than the potential of any CB they can grab in the second. Does that mean I’m right and Claiborne will outperform every CB taken after him? Maybe not. But, if we’re talking odds, I think the odds are in Claiborne’s favor.
True. But I still think 21 games is too short to completely give up on him either. Let him start this season, see if he’s gotten significantly better, and, if not, bring in Wheedon if he’s ready. I just don’t see the logic in having to get rid of McCoy because they drafted Wheedon.
The Cleveland Plain Dealer is reporting that Mike Holmgren has not shown up as scheduled at the Browns’ facility to prepare for round two. When reporters went to his home, they found a pair of boots on the front step and heard troubling noises coming from inside.
That’s just it…I think he is a complete stud. He never gave up a sack in college and had an astounding 126 knockdown blocks in his career. That said, I get what you’re saying but the Bengals have tried and whiffed on so many project guards in the later rounds that I’m glad that they landed as close to a sure thing as they could get.
This is pretty cool.
Brandon Weeden takes out clay pigeons.
I agree; but it’s not a matter of Claiborne versus Brockers or Claiborne versus Josh Robinson. It’s Claiborne versus Brockers AND Robinson. IMO, that’s a much, much higher bar, especially for a bad team with many needs.
No, they don’t have to; but in the same spirit of maximizing value, since they already have a serviceable veteran backup in Seneca Wallace, it makes sense to flip McCoy for a useful draft pick if they can do it.
Reports out of the Rams war room say that they had Brockers #5 on their board. On which I call complete Bullshit.
On another note, I’m really disappointed in the 49ers pick. He probably would have been there in the 2nd, maybe in the upper half of the 3rd.

Not likely. This article indicates that those pesky Rams were banking on getting Jenkins in the 2nd, which meant no later than #45. So that means the WR-needy Rams got screwed out of their best options. Ha ha.
