Funny I just read that article about 10 minutes ago. I like Jenkins, his being at Illinois let me see a lot of him, I just don’t like the value of pick. He has good hands and great straightline speed, but I think an upgrade on the OL would have been a better use of the pick.
So many things I wanted to reply to but you guys just talked too much, I’ll just have to be general.
First on the Bulaga vs. Reiff comments. I disliked Bulaga primarily because I saw him as slow footed and having a weak anchor. As a LT he’s just not mobile enough. With Clifton’s retirement/release we may or may not get to see that in action. That said, Bulaga played over his head last season and might end up proving me wrong. He looks like a better RT than initially expected, but we’ll see what happens.
I think Reiff is a slightly better prospect because he’s a bit more nimble and has a stronger base. He’s a classic RT candidate but I think he’s fleet footed enough to be on the left side, though I’m not sure he’ll have the upper body strength to be a force in the run game.
Anyone who liked Zeitler over DeCastro is frigging insane. Zeitler has the good fortune to be a Badger and I think that’s what boosted his value. I’d love Zeitler in the mid-to-late 2nd round because I think he’ll be a good, but not special, OG. DeCastro will be really, really special. Like a young Hutchinson good
Agreed on Jenkins being gone in round 2. He was a fast riser and I’m not just being a homer when I pick him in the top of the 2nd round. The Rams, Browns and Vikings all would have been targeting Jenkins at the start of Day 2.
I thought both those late RB selections were poor ones. Neither guy looks remotely special, not even close to Mendenhall or Matthews quality, and are foolish 1st round picks. The RB class is awful this year so it’s tough to say you’d have gotten a comparable player in say the 3rd round, but that doesn’t mean you have to take the 2nd best guy when the 2nd best guy isn’t very good.
I don’t think he’s exerting his authority as a way to play politics, he’s not that kind of guy, but he came out and said that McClellin was definitely his selection and he was a player that he had scouted for the Chiefs 3-4 scheme. He basically confirmed that he was a 3-4 OLB prospect and then he provided some fluffy explanation about having “it” when it comes to getting off blocks on the edge. Hope he’s right. There’s rampant speculation that McClellin could eventually be asked to move to MLB or WLB to replace Briggs or Urlacher when they hang it up. Not sure how I feel about that but it would make the pick a lot more defensible so long as you trust McClellin’s ability to drop into coverage.
I’ll say this, even if Emery is not sold on Lovie and the Tampa 2, which I could accept, he’s in for a world of hurt if he tries to switch to a 3-4 defense. The powers that be will not have it and the media will crush him.
I would have been fine with Silatolu there, but he’s still on the board, along with Konz, Osemele, James Brown, Ben Jones, and Molk. There are good guards available later, don’t worry; plus we don’t know what the 49ers brass think of Kilgore.
In the “Dick Move” of the draft, some idiot thought it would be funny to toy with a prospect by pretending to be a representative of the Bengals and telling him they were going to draft him.
I actually like Martin a lot, I think he will be a very good back in the NFL, I also do not like taking Running Backs early, no matter who they are.
Apparently A.J. Jenkins’s cousin pranked him the same way, so when the 49ers actually called, he was skeptical. At least he was called. Sanu will go soon enough, but I feel sorry for him.
I’m over my meltdown today. At least I can watch a guy make NFL throws. You have no idea how frustrating it is to go without that for years.
The Browns are supposedly very high on Hill, wouldn’t be surprised to see a trade up. And since Weeden can fling the ball to him, I’d be happy.
Let me just jump in here and say how thrilled I am that the Chargers got Melvin Ingram at #18. Omniscient took him for the Dolphins at #8 in our mock draft, and most other mocks I read had him between 7 and 12. The best pass rusher in the draft fell to a team that desperately needed to improve its pass rush.
Love it.
I like Kuechly for the Panthers, and I’m glad the Bills didn’t do something crazy like trading up or taking a big reach - I’m not sure anybody had them taking Gilmore but he seems to have been generally expected to go in that part of the first round.
This is the final say in all first round draft analysis. Nothing else compares.
I like the kid…I met him once as he was friends with a few of my employees that went to school with him at St Xavier during the year they made their state championship run (2007?).
St X is a bigtime Ohio high school football program, as is the other local Catholic school, Elder.
That matched my reaction to McClellin exactly.
That seemed to happen for a lot of the “good” teams. A first rate pass rusher fell to the needy Chargers. The best interior OL fell to the needy Steelers. According to some draft boards the best pass rusher fell to the needy Patriots, ditto with a top 2 ILB.
PFT posted a Round 2 Mock Draft.
The top 10 picks are all pretty damn good and the fits are all a little too perfect for it to actually shake out anything like that. Interesting to read though. I doubt the Bears would leave Jeffery on the board to take Massie, but a case could be made that it’s the smarter pick.
Maybe I’m too hard on the guy, but he really didn’t stand out to me any more than the other DE/OLB’s lumped in there like Perry, Upshaw, or Merciless. He’s a helluva pass rusher, but he also wasn’t even good enough to start until this year, and at 6’2" with short arms, I’m not sure he can get off blocks well enough to succeed in the NFL. Maybe he does, but none of those kinds of guys really impressed me all that much.
I’ll just leave this here.
That’s freaking hilarious!
I remember how I used to feel.
Just listened to Simmons podcast from before the draft with Lombardi and Lombardi compared 3 players to historical players and considering our discussion here it was ironic.
Shea McClellin = Karl Mecklenberg
Chandler Jones = Simeon Rice
Nick Perry = Lamar Woodley
Why is it that when comparisons like this are made it is always white guys compared to white guys and African-american guys compared to African-american guys?
