Mike Martin, NT/DT, Michigan - he’s short, but other than that, he’s got a lot of what you want in a D lineman: production, non-stop motor, and ability to penetrate. Take him in the third round.
Dennis Kelly, OT, Purdue - more of a finesse pass protector, he needs to bulk up and get stronger, but he’s got the length (6’ 8") and room to grow. He’s a try hard, 3 year starter who has the upside to be a starting tackle in the pro’s. Likely won’t go until the 6th or 7th round, so he’s worth a shot as backup.
Ryan Tannehill, QB, Texas A & M - How he is considered a top 5 prospect is beyond me. Grabbing him in the first round is pure desperation.
Janoris Jenkins, CB, North Alabama - 4 kids by 3 different women and he can’t stop smoking pot. What’s not to like?
Justin Blackmon, WR, Oklahoma State - I like his floor and he can find a place in the NFL, but he’s not a top 10 player. Late first round is good value though.
Kendall Wright, WR, Baylor - Not a first rounder. Too small, too undisciplined, and only does one thing well.
Mike Adams, OT, Ohio State - too stiff, will get beat by speed/tenacious rushers, and spotty attitude. Another who shouldn’t be in the discussion in the first round.
Dontari Poe, DT, Memphis - Couldn’t produce against poor competition, but looks really good in shorts. No thanks.
*Not just John. “Da”John. You can presumably find him In Da Club.
**I don’t know about you but I would look to install an Ishmaa’ily Kitchen if I could afford one. I suspect it is done out in Arabesque marble and comes complete with matching tagine.
***This guy has missed his calling – he should probably be helping his brother “Ming The” rule Mongo and fight off Flash Gordon (himself erstwhile of the NY Jets). How long until he acquires the nickname, Ming?
****I think this could be a phonetic for ordering an expensive bottle of red wine.
*****I don’t know what is going on here. I assume this is pronounced “Kyle”.
******Rokevious? Rokevious?! How do people come up with these names?
My Name Guys:
Alameda Te’amu, DT, Washington
Hebron Fangupo, DT, Brigham Young
Amini Silatolu, OG, Midwestern State
Kelechi Osemele, OG, Iowa State
Senio Kelemete, OG, Washington
Rokevius Watkins, OG, South Carolina
Nick Toon, WR, Wisconsin
The “name” of this draft has to be Brandon. I count eight guys named Brandon just on my list ~150 players long; I noticed a few more on the deep boards.
As for what I want from my 49ers.
Top Needs:
Right guard, wide receiver, defensive line depth, safety
In the first round, I want them to trade up to draft a star, my top choice is Coby Fleener. (If GM Trent Baalke likes some other prospect, I’ll decide when it happens if I like the move.) I that doesn’t happen, just pick a solid right guard at #30, one of Silatolu, Zeitler, or Konz should be available. If that happens, I want many offensive skill players drafted in the middle rounds.
If the 49ers trade down from #30, I would expect to see the resulting extra draft picks re-packaged and try to get three 2nd Round selections. I would be surprised if we have seven new 49ers by Sunday, I expect more like four or five.
Here’s my list of 1st round guys that I’d love to have in a Bears uniform.
Stephon Gilmore
Chandler Jones
David DeCastro
Michael Floyd
Luke Kuechly
Mark Barron
Dontari Poe
Here’s my list of guys who I wouldn’t touch with a 10 foot pole.
Mike Adams
Janoris Jenkins
Dre Kirkpatrick
Kendall Wright
Courtney Upshaw
Shae McClellin
Doug Martin
Dont’a Hightower
Nick Perry
Bruce Irvin
Dwayne Allen
I agree. If Trent Richardson goes down with a career ending injury in Week 6 of his rookie year, I can see Martin outperforming Richardson. Outside of that, I just don’t see it.
Martin is, to me, too slow, not elusive enough, and feasted on bad defensive teams. He’s a bowling ball type back like MJD, but without MJD’s speed, moves, or explosiveness.
Meanwhile, I think Trent Richardson, if he avoids injury of course, will be a Pro Bowler. If they have Pro Bowls, which they won’t any more, so I guess I’ll say he’ll be an All Pro.
I’ve been warming myself up to the idea of Richardson because, well, who else is there?
My concerns have always been about doubting the value of a top 5 RB rather than whether he’ll be good. He seems like the perfect AFC north back. Pair him with a monster RT and the Browns can at least have an offensive identity.
You should see some of the names my girlfriend (the principal) and my brother (the cop) have come across. Aquanetta, Lemonjello, Orangejello and a few Le-a’s (that’s Ledasha) top the list.
I was thinking about it today, and I think this would be my approach were I Holmgren.
Take Richardson at 4 (assuming he’s there)
Take 2-3 WRs or TEs in rounds 2-7
Trade out of 22, getting a first-rounder next year. A 1 and 2, both next year, would be acceptable.
They already have a zillion picks this year, so they’ll have plenty of young bodies coming in. What they need to do is figure out the QB position. With a full offseason, Richardson and hopefully another rookie weapon, McCoy has a completely fair shot. If he steps up, well and good. If not, then you have two first-round picks next year, and you look trade up to take the best QB in the draft, Barkley or whomever.
IMO Tannehill or Weeden just keeps them on the mediocre train.
Agreed, I’m ready to put QB off for next year, because overdrafting a QB doesn’t make them great. Not much point for Tannehill or Weeden unless they fall pretty far and become worth a gamble without much of a commitment.
