NFL WEEK 16 Tons, what do you get.

Playoffs are just a couple weeks away, and things are getting very interesting. At least for the teams with playoff aspirations. The other teams can spend a bit of time evaluating team needs, and maybe get a longer look at the younger players on the roster.

In other news, Pro Bowl Results are out. Jarvis Landry (Julian Edelman and Courtland Sutton were more deserving), Aaron Rodgers (Kirk Cousins), and Laremy Tunsil (Mitchell Schwartz) got in mostly on reputation rather than play this year. But it was nice to see Danielle Hunter, Tre’Davious White, and Chris Jones getting some love despite not getting many headlines. 12 Ravens is way too many though, and please, please, please don’t make me listen to yet another NFL commentators saying Dak Prescott deserved a spot. His stats against very shitty teams was great, but his play against good teams showed it was just that … stat padding.

And more “pay attention to me!” antics from OBJ and Jerry Jones this week. As usual.

Saturday’s games have a couple really interesting games, with the Overrated, then underrated, now currently rated Bills going against the Patriots. While I like the Bills this year, I actually expect this to be a game where Bellicheck reminds everyone why he’s the best coach in the NFL. The Rams v. Niners should be more interesting, but it all depends on which Rams’ team shows up. The one that put the lid on the Seahawks or the one that made Dallas look like a deserving playoff team. Talk about inconsistent.

Of Sunday’s early games, the Saints/Titans is about the only one I’d check out. Two pretty good teams trying to help their playoff chances/seeding. I haven’t seen more than a couple plays of Ryan Tannehill, but it’s a nice story that he’s getting a career revival in Tennessee. Probably just smoke and mirrors, but he’s more proof that throwing resource after resource at an average (or better than average) NFL QB may not be the best way.

Sunday’s late games don’t grab me at all. I suppose if I gave a crap about the NFC East, Dallas v. Philly would be interesting, and it may be. But it’s hard to care.

I love the Mahomes v. Trubisky story from Sunday night’s game. Makes me smile. Give the Bears credit, though, they’ve had every reason to pack it in, but that defense continues to impress and they continue to fight. It will be interesting to see how the Chiefs gameplan.

Finally, Monday night is the game of the week. It not only involves my beloved Packers, but they’re playing a very good team for playoff positioning. The Vikings new stadium is a tough place to play, their defense is for real, and Cousins is having a great season (and not getting much respect for it). The injury to Dalvin Cook is a concern, so it will be intriguing to see if he plays. Should be a great game.

Go Pack Go.

As a Cowboys fan, no way Dak deserves to be in the Pro Bowl. He is only good at beating up on bad teams.

And Dallas-Philadelphia will be a de facto title game for the NFC East, indeed, an unofficial playoff game.

ESPN just reported that the Jags have fired Tom Coughlin.

If you’ve not watched Joe Burrow’s (Burreaux, natch) Heisman speech…you should.

Not quite - if Dallas wins, they win the NFC East. If the Eagles win, they need to either win the following week or have Dallas lose the following week to win the division.

Once again, the visitors luck out with decent weather for a December night game at Soldier Field, high of 53 low of 35. Not too bad for late December in Chicago.

Bleh

What was the margin of victory for the Patriots in the first meeting between the two teams earlier this season? 6 points? And the Bills are coming off of their first regular season win in Pittsburgh in 44 years? And Tom Brady is not selected for the Pro Bowl for the first time in 11 seasons? And the Bills with a real chance of winning the division this late in the season? A division that the Patriots have pretty much dominated for going on two decades straight, now? This might be the most vulnerable we’ve seen the Patriots in a while. Then again, I’ve heard that at this point in the season for several seasons in a row, now, and you notice where the Patriots usually end up, anyway, right?

I think the 49ers got caught looking ahead to this weekend’s game last Sunday against Atlanta and it ended up costing them (points to the Falcons for not “packing it in” when they were 1 - 7, or whatever) while I don’t know WHAT happened to the Rams one week after putting the Seahawks’ unbeaten road record on ice. The 49ers allowed a touchdown on the opening drive and then absolutely shut the defending conference champions down in the first meeting of the year between the two teams. The Rams need to win to stand any chance of being able to defend their conference title in a few weeks but I’m sure that the 49ers aren’t the least bit happy about letting last Sunday’s game slip through their fingers. I’m picking San Francisco in a hard-hitting, close one (although if they were to win in a rout it wouldn’t bother me in the least. And if they lose? Then it’ll [as far as I know] still be “winner takes all” for the division when they travel to Seattle for their showdown with the Seahawks in Week 17).

Yikes. Is it just me or does this year’s crop of lousy teams seem to be worse than the usual crop of lousy N.F.L. teams from any given year? Or maybe it just seems that there are MORE of them this time around. . .

The Saints have already wrapped their division title up. Could this road game against a less-than-inspiring non-conference foe this late in the season be a “trap” game for them?

The “Stillers” coming in off of their first regular season loss at home to the Buffalo Bills since the “Steel Curtain” was a thing and the Jets are. . .well, they’re the Jets. I expect the team based in western Pennsylvania to bounce back this week and win (though it wouldn’t bother me in the least if they didn’t).

How many people are willing to lay money down that the Clowns’ll win the re-match (and how in heck are the Clowns still in the running for a playoff spot?)?

A late-season division rivalry game between two disappointing teams, one that’s moving (again) after this season and one that probably should’ve stayed put a couple of seasons ago.

Go Lions!

I’m pullin’ for the “Iggles” in this one but no matter what happens I think that team from Texas will end up taking 4th seed in the N.F.C. playoffs, anyway (unfortunately).

I think the Seahawks should win this one but it has all the hallmarks of a “trap” game for them - they have a H-U-G-E game coming up in Week 17 AND for some reason they’ve had REAL TROUBLE beating AZ in Seattle during Pete Carroll’s and Russell Wilson’s time with the Seahawks (while at the same time generally NOT having much trouble beating the Cardinals in AZ). I’m picking the 'hawks to win simply because I think they’re better than the Cardinals but the KEY game for determining the division title comes NEXT weekend, not this one.

Not sure what to say about this one, except: Go, Chiefs!

Yeesh. I’m a fan of the Packers but I remember the earlier game between these two teams this season: the Packers jumped out to a 21 - 0 lead and then had to hold on as their offense did very little the rest of the game. Even self-identified Pack fan Hamlet acknowledges that his team hasn’t look all that impressive in recent weeks. I’m pullin’ for the Packers but I’m gonna have to pick the Vikings to win this one.

I’ll be watching the game on mute.

It’s kind of a weird game for Sunday night. The Bears are out. Chiefs clinched their division and won’t be able to get the 2 seed if the Pats win on Sunday. It’s possible they could fall to the fourth but a lot would need to go wrong for that to happen.

Packer season ticket holder and shareholder piping up to agree.

They’re 11-3, and the ugliest 11-win team I can remember seeing. Normally, if the Packers were sitting on this kind of record at this time of year, I’d be excited about the playoffs, and maybe starting to wonder if this could be a Super Bowl run. Not this year – I have no idea how they’ve managed 11-3, and they have had a number of games in which they’ve looked somwhere between “playing down to the level of the competition” to “just plain bad.” :stuck_out_tongue:

I don’t know all the rules, but there’s not much else to flex to Sunday night. I assume Cowboys vs Eagles is a protected game that can’t be flexed.

Here’s the rules on the SNF flex schedule:
http://www.nfl.com/flexible-schedules

This Washington Post article from a few weeks ago indicates that there were only three games which could possibly have been flexed into the Sunday night spot this week:
Cowboys-Eagles
Saints-Titans
Panthers-Colts

However, this article, from this past Tuesday, says:

So, apparently, they could have flexed Cowboys-Eagles to SNF, but chose not to, because they made the choice to not institute a flex before it was known that the Bears were out of the playoffs.

By the rules, except for week 17, flexed games must be announced at least twelve days prior to the game. At the point of no return, it looked possible that the Bears could still be in the playoff hunt, needing to continue winning to have a chance.

Why anyone decided that would make better spectacle than a NFCE race to be fourth-shittiest in the division is beyond me.

I feel bad for Buffalo. Solid defensive effort, a rb with almost 5 yards per carry, but a inaccurate, flustered QB and iffy play calling are killing them. Still, a close game thanks to a turnover.

Yeah, they’re not bad. I’d like to see a re-match between the Bills and the Ravens in the playoffs.

Rams lose! No playoffs for THEM this season!! (Yes!!)

Holy crap, the last few weeks have been nerve-wracking for Niner fans. Another last-second finish, this time, thankfully, another Gould game-winning field goal. Pretty sure the Seahawks game will be moved to Sunday Night. This team should make for some entertaining playoff games for the rest of the league.

NOOOOOOO!!! Now I have to hope the Cardinals beat the Seahawks, otherwise Green Bay is locked in to the #2 seed, at best, the HORROR!, no matter what they do.

Dalvin Cook is still highly doubtful for Monday night, which makes me slightly less nervous about Green Bay visiting. The Packers have yet to win in that fancy new stadium, but this is a great opportunity to do so. While I’d love to make Minnesota play outdoors at the end of the year like a true NFCN team, them’s the breaks.

Maybe there’s hope for the Packers tomorrow night, after all. Dalvin Cook has been ruled “out” and don’t forget Kirk Cousins’ sterling record on Monday night games.

What a catch by Anderson for a Jets opening-drive TD.

Steelers looking like a wet newspaper against the Jets. For heaven’s sake, the Jets.
