Well, the alterative was to be up by 11 points, less than two minutes, and the other team has no timeouts. That’s not a guaranteed win, but it’s pretty damn close.
The way it happened was rather like those times when a player can get an easy touchdown, but deliberately stops before running into the end zone. Keeping the ball gives a better chance to win than scoring points does.
Does anybody remember the first time that obviously happened? I don’t recall seeing it before about ten years ago.
Evan McPherson of the Bengals is about to go for the FG record with a 67 yarder…he hit the “warmup” one (Green Bay called one of those pointless icing timeouts alas) a la Justin Tucker’s by hitting the crossbar and having it sneak over, but missed the real one 5 yards short and to the right. SHIT.
Tampa Bay just scored to go up 20-13 over the Niners with 44 seconds left in the first half. Then they went for two and failed to convert. I guess I know why they tried it, but I certainly don’t agree with the decision.
It’s because there was a PF penalty on the scoring play. Teams basically automatically go for 2 now if they get the ball closer to the goal line (and the 49ers haven’t been able to stop the run today).
90% of the time it is a total waste of time as the kicker nails it, and I loathe it in any event. For all GB knew he’d miss the first one and nail the 2nd.
I’ve been pooping on the Baker MVP talk even as a Bucs fan. But if he pulls out this win without Evans, Godwin and Egbuka - arguably 3 of the top 12 wide receivers in the league - he will absolutely be the clubhouse leader in my book. (He has also played most of the year without our best 3 starting offensive linemen, including Tristan Wirfs who came back last week.)
He’s the QB on a 5-1 team, so he’s got a chance. If Josh Allen, Pat Mahomes, Baker Mayfield, Matthew Stafford, Jordan Love, Jared Goff, Puca Nakua, Jonathon Taylor, Jalen Hurts, Jayden Daniels, and Justin Herbert all get injured, he might have a better than average chance.
I haven’t seen them make a lot of mistakes in this game. The second interception was a bonehead play by Mac Jones but the first one wasn’t his fault. Other than those they haven’t had any negative plays I can think of. For a team starting a backup QB and two backup starting wideouts on the road, that’s pretty good.
Dare I like Baker Mayfield? I lost interest after he showed up in every commercial I saw early in his career. But I love the success of re-tread QBs, his teammates seem to like him, and he’s certainly playing well.
The false start on 4th and 1 was boneheaded. The decision to go for it on 4th and 6 when you can take the points was boneheaded. The interceptions were boneheaded (the first might have been the WR doing the wrong route but still boneheaded by someone). The personal foul after the last interception was boneheaded.
I realize that Progressive Insurance is headquartered just outside of Cleveland (in a town named Mayfield!), but their advertising agency is missing the boat (yeah, intended) if they don’t continue the “At Home with Baker Mayfield” series, but this time living in that pirate ship at Raymond James.
I mean it’s not like they’re going to do “At the Massage Parlor with DeShaun Watson” commercials.
I couldn’t stand Baker in the Cleveland says, but I’m starting to love him. I could do without the trash talking but I love watching him throw himself around on the field for first downs.
I know no one would track this stat but the Chiefs have to lead the league in penalties against them that the refs only threw the flag like 7 seconds after the play ended because they remembered they Chiefs had to be bailed out of every situation
Kareem Hunt is in his 4th year in a row with a sub 4.0 ypc, and is 8 years removed from a 1000 yard season. He has to have pictures of Andy Reid doing coke off of Mahomes’ mom’s naked body to still have a job despite being old, slow, and sub-average.
